We really wanted to like this place. Alas, the food does not justify the (very high) prices. The catfish is their signature dish. It is designed to wow as it comes out whole with a generous heap of fresh cilantro. But ours was over-done. An amateur mistake. The beet appetizer with sheep cheese was interesting, but the beets were too thinly cut. We could barely taste the chestnuts in the chestnut dessert. The steak was just so-so. Not much Japanese in the overall fusion. The atmosphere and services were pleasant, but if top-notch taste is your goal, this is not the place.
Super disappointing first dinner at this Zagat rated restaurant and not worth the hype. Very limited wine list for wine by the glass. The filet was utterly nondescript. I'd try it again, with skepticism.
We’ve been eating at Shiro for many years. It has NEVER failed to impress us on all dimensions. Food is excellent, service is exemplary, and ambience is QUIET, perfect for intimate conversation and superb dining. We’ll be back Soon!
We celebrated my mom’s birthday for the forth year in a row. Shiros is her favorite restaurant! Food and service is always outstanding! Highly recommend the specials for the day!
Fine dining and excellent service. Still wonderful after 30+ years!!
The catfish was divine! The four of us indulged in the flavorful fish and plan on returning soon. We have only smiles and good memories until we can return. Thank you. 5 stars!
Best restaurant in terms of food, service and ambiance. I had the special tempura halibut with Tarragon sauce and it was wonderful! Consistently excellent.
Adequate. Quiet atmosphere, elegant if plain, friendly impeccable service. Food ordinary, only had entree, left hungry. Expensive for what you get. Won’t race back.
All 4 fish entree are cooked to perfection.
Waitress is friendly n sweet.
As always, excellent and imaginative fish entrees and appetizers, beautifully presented, with attentive congenial service.
Have gone to shiros on many occasions.the food and service are excellent...
Can't say enough good things about this restaurant! The food is absolutely delicious. In particular, the fish/seafood is expertly cooked, not overdone as is so common, and the flavors wonderful. Service is top notch, attentive but not stuffy. The ambiance is an additional asset, quiet despite being busy, comfortable in every way. It is an excellent value, as well. Highly recommended!
Shiro’s food and service was excellent! We celebrated my wife’s birthday. We are frequent diners at Shiro’s and every time we go it is perfect!
One of the outstanding restaurants in Southern California. Impeccable cuisine and service.
A wonderful experience....my favorite restaurant any where! Thanks you.
We've been to Shiro several (10-12) times, and have always been impressed by: 1) the quality and presentation of the food, 2) the service, and 3) the atmosphere. For this trip, we took friends for their first-time visit, and they we also very impressed. Highly recommended.
Outstanding! I loved the Frend Sea Bass with its crispy skin and amazing sauce. So satisfying! The squash blossom was also a big hit in the appetizer round and I’d highly recommend this starter. Win win win with the food quality and service!
There were three of us. Appetizers beet salad, stuffed Zucchini flowers , truffle ravioli, and steamed clams. I loved the plump juicy clams. I had a secon one for just me. The deep fried catfish was outstanding as usual. It is alway realizable in excellence.
We just stumbled on Shiro as we were driving back home from a trip. It was our anniversary and we just wanted to stop for dinner. Shiro had good reviews so we decided to go there. It has become one of my favorite places. The service was excellent, as well as the food. This place really made an impression on me and my husband and we will drive back to Pasadena to Shiro often. Thanks Shiro for spoiling us on our anniversary!
Always a great experience. Our goto place for special occasions.
Shiro is one of our favorite restauants which we visit fairly regularly. I made the reservation for 5 on a Monday through Open Table for Friday evening, a popular day/time. Shiro opens Wed. So I was afraid it might be to late so I booked through Open Table. When we arrived Friday evening we were told the reservation through Open Table was for 2 and they had to make a table just outside the dining room in the waiting area. They were apologetic but had no available table for 5. It would seem there was some error in comminication from Open Table to Shiro as the information I received from Open Table was for 5.
The dinner and service was otherwise its usual high standard. Unfortunate that we were stuck in the hinterlands, not Shiro’s fault.
This is a lovely restaurant. It has delicious, meticulously prepared food. The service is excellent. Beautiful starters and main courses. A small but well-selected wine list, fairly priced. I recommend this restaurant, especially for quiet times and serene conversations.
Slightly less than average food at top top prices
Great food! The choices were limited but they were very tasty. The shirotini cocktail was great too.
We were tucked in a small table next to a round table of 6. It would be nicer to have more room and not be able to heat their conversation. Otherwise, food is great as usual!
Consistently great food and service and we’ve enjoyed going to Shiro Restaurant for years. Our last visit was to celebrate our youngest son’s birthday-his restaurant of choice.
We love Shiro’s. Shirley, the owner,is always friendly and makes a special effort to remember everyone’s names. The ambiance is romantic, food wonderful, and service outstanding. I highly recommend Shiro’s Restaurant!!!
Incredible! Wonderful ambiance, delicious food and perfectly made cocktails. Martini to start, fried oysters to die for, mouthwatering whole catfish with vegetables cooked to perfection on the side. Finished with profiteroles- Unforgettable meal from beginning to end.
Fabulous as always. The most consistently fine restaurant in the SGV!
This is a place we go to for special occasions, and as always, the meal was impeccable. Server (Hannah) was gracious, friendly and attentive.
We love Shiro! Our family has dined there for many years. Warm ambiance and consistently excellent food.
Has always been a very reliable top notch restaurant. After all these years, mainly because of its location, it’s not as well-known as it should be.
Appetizer and salad were excellent. The appetizer of freshly made cheese stuffed ravioli with spinach with truffles was wonderful.
I ordered their most popular dish, an entire deep fried catfish, and this has never disappointed. My wife had the loup de mare (branzino) which which is good as she’s had anywhere
The perfect dining experience! Really friendly staff (and owner) and perfectly prepared dishes. This was a fixed menu for Valentine's Day, but I've been before and always get the special of the day. I've never been disappointed.
Had some excellent seafood dishes.
We love Shiro’s! Shirley and her waiters are the best in town!
While the menu is not very imaginative...the food was delicious. Overall had an enjoyable experience.
Outstanding as always!
We always enjoy superb service and excellent cuisine at Shiro! The staff knows how to make you feel welcome and the chefs have your meal ready in a very timely fashion. The location is so easy to find and the parking is free and close to the restaurant. From the appetizers to the desert, you won’t be disappointed! The bread is amazing too! Shiro is a neighborhood gem!
Always the best food and service. Can't pass up the ravioli and catfish, but the pork tenderloin special was great! Always a wonderful experience. Thank you!
When we want to treat ourselves to something special, this is one of the top go to places. A lot of the same staff over the years, food is consistently great and the service is always good. I think our waiter may have been a bit new, which is why I only gave four stars. It was also very warm when we arrived at 7:30, but a mention to the hostess and within minutes, it was down to a comfortable level. Only slightly negative was I don't think Open Table let them know it was our anniversary as there was no mention of it.
