As a “chronic” Shimbashi customer...sometimes once a week for the past 10+ years...I am amazed by the high level of food quality and service...highly recommended!
This is Japanese small plate dining at it's best. So many choices and every one is excellent.
Always great food at Shimbashi Izakaya. I make a special effort to get to Del Mar and eat here whenever I am in San Diego. Absolutely superb Sushi. The staff are friendly and the food is innovative.
Fantastic as usual! Best sushi and sashimi around!
This is a wonderful restaurant with an extensive and interesting menu and excellent service. We will definitely be going back.
Very good food. Also good service. Prices on the high side. But overall very good. Tip calculator (ex 18%, 20%) is NOT correct as it is based on total bill which includes tax. Why should we pay tip on tax.?
No special offer for our anniversary. We expected something since we selected the dinner place through open table.
I’ve never had anything less than an amazing time at Shimbashi. The food is so fresh I can practically feel the ocean from it. A personal favorite to me and my entire family
I like the small plates concept and the service was good. Generally the food was good as well, except our tempura shrimp was under cooked and cold.
This is our favorite Japanese restaurant in SD. Authentic Japanese foods, interesting menu, gives me feel I am back in Japan. Friendly atmosphere, always remembers us. Good wait staff.
I love Shimbashi Izakaya - without being a local their friendly service makes you feel that way
I came for my husband's birthday - he prefers the sushi bar and it was pleasant to find a spot
the sushi so fresh ..... the ambiance fun but respectful .... so looking forward to going back.
Hate to say it other than view and service was just not very good. Food was bland and very small portions. And the price is ridiculous. I guess you pay for the location. Would never return and would tell anyone there are many better sushi places out there.
We return frequently for great authentic Japanese treats at an informal oceanside bistro
Incredible sushi! We sat at the bar and were treated by Ike, who was fun, knowledgeable, and chatty. He steered us in the right direction with fresh catches (snapper belly was a new bite for me) and was engaging in the right ways. Sake was delicious, fish was incredibly fresh, and the atmosphere was unpretentious in an otherwise sceney neighborhood.
We went with our three kids under 10 at 5pm on a weekday while visiting San Diego, and they were very accommodating! Lovely view, great food and awesome service. We had three servings of the mackarel...it was that good! The hot sake and hamachi carpaccio were also particularly noteworthy, although everything we had was good.
Took my wife here late night for the first time and I might say the sushi was fresh and the service was top notch. I might add the best sushi in town!
Wonderful Japanese food. Feeling is almost Japan Izakaya.
Favorite sushi place!
My favorite Japanese restaurant in North County! Authentic, fresh, delicious and unique dishes. Run by Japanese. Highly recommended!!
We had a lovely meal. We tried a three different specialty rolls (great), a sushi platter (great), ginger beef (so so) and dumplings (very good).
The food and service were spectacular. I’ve been here twice recently, once with my wife and again with the kids. Both visits were very positive.
Live the outside seating. Great selection of sake. Hot food available. Not just sushi.
Very good food. Consistently good. Loved the lobster salmon roll. Great squid legs (karaage).
sushi was "ok" had better. small portions that seemed over priced. suspect paying heavily for location. won't go back nor recommend to others. Boto is much better.
Always a fantastic experience here! The food and service are top notch!!
This is our favorite place to eat in San Diego. Authentic Japanese food and setting. Great evening sunsets, good wait staff, and excellent menu choices. Good drinks both Japanese craft beers and saki.
The location is great. The sushi rolls were ok nothing special. The service was extemely fast. I felt rushed. No time to relax and have a conversation, the entire dinner experience was 30 minutes for 3 people.
We had three different sushi rolls and one of them we had to return because it was very fishy but the other two were delicious. They were very nice and didn't charge us for the one we returned and the service was wonderful. We will definitely come back. Sunset would be perfect at this place!!
Perfect night of dining which included salmon skin salad, shrimp shumai, tofu miso soup and a lemon albacore roll, pure deliciousness. Oh and a carafe of yummy chilled sake 😋 Will come back again and again!
Service was very poor. I have been to this restaurant previously and service was much better. I have no interest in going back.
Wonderful location and menu. Much to choose from between appetizers, sushi rolls, shared plates, etc. Sushi rolls are more classic - that is not overly large so it is a little pricey. But the flavors are amazing and it allows you to take a piece in a single bite without stuffing your face. Appetizers are a great assortment and there is nothing we didn't love.
Good outdoor seating option with a nice ocean view. We sampled a number of dishes, both sushi and others, and every one was delicious! You can order a sake sampler if you want to try/compare a few. A bit pricey, but we had fun. Loud party of 8 next to us was the only down side.
While the service could be more attentive and knowledgeable it couldn't be more warm. Food was excellent and the location is breathtaking. It's a must do for me when visiting friends in San Diego County.
The sushi was okay. But the small plates were very authentic and tasty. A little bit overpriced.
Our favorite Japanese restaurant in SD. Authentic regional dishes or tapas type entres. Excellent sushi. Good service and beautiful sunsets. We eat here often
Majority of our group loved their food. Unfortunately one of our family members ordered something on the menu they were out of which made her second choice satiating but not overly enjoyable. Hope that helps.
We absolutely loved this place. We sat at the sushi bar. It was authentic Japanese and a lot of fun. The crowd was lively but our chefs made all of the difference. The quality of the fish was outstanding as well. I'll definitely be coming back.
great meal as always. We continue to return to the restaurant because of the food and atmosphere.
Three of us sat outside for dinner on a Saturday night. Friendly and attentive service, mostly delicious food, great sunset. The "mostly" qualifier is because it was tough to distinguish a couple of the sashimi selections by flavor. The fish might have pre-sliced and put into a refrigerated area prior to the night's opening. But it was fresh and even appealing to the person in our group with limited sashimi experience. We also had pork shumai, vegetable tempura, and hamachi kamma. All excellent.
Went in to try the restaurant for their Sake Bar and just loved the experience. Good list of Sake and other drinks and the servers are very nice and courteous. Besides the amazing Sake collection, the food is also great. Being a vegetarian, I thought there would be nothing for me at an authentic sushi place, but to my surprise there were quite a few options for both appetizers and main-course and they tasted pretty good as well. The fried tofu was really amazing - very soft and fresh inside and well crispy outside.
