Shimbashi Izakaya Ratings and Reviews
The sushi counter at Shimbashi Izakaya was a fun, delicious experience. I am told that it is authentic to the sushi counters in Japan but I have never been. I can tell you that I would recommend the sushi counter to anyone who is looking to laugh and meet new interesting people.
The food was great. I had sushi but also tried a breaded pork, sake and soup. All were high quality.
It was our first time at Shimbashi Izakaya. We chose this restaurant based on good reviews and our experience in summary was not good at all. The restaurant has a small pretty patio, and orientation of tables makes their service and going in and out for customers difficult.
Taking our order took long but having what we order took way longer than we expect. Our waitress tried to deliver us three times wrong orders which were for other tables and everytime we repeated our order. Meanwhile for the table behind us she was handing over plates to a guest instead of serving to them.
When we got our foods, our waitress even didn't check everything is OK before leaving; instead I had to wait a bit and asked for chopsticks. I was expecting a good quality sushi, what we got a terrible quality fish both for roll and nigiri. Beef tongue we ordered came after 15 minutes we finished our first two order. It should be a tender meat, but what we ate was something else, was not tender at all. Overall the food is pretty pricy here in terms of quality and amounts. When we asked the check we saw extra charged item, Edamame. I asked it to be removed, and we got no excuse or sorry words. We got a terrible service, poor quality food at a pretty high price. I would suggest you to stay away this restaurant because they have to learn first restaurant management before asking these high prices.
This restaurant is overrated on yelp. The sushi is mediocre and the rest of the food were blunt. It was my first time and would be the last. Pricey but doesn't match the taste of the food. The only thing that is nice is the outside sitting - nothing else.
I was really disappointed.
My gf and I went for Valentine's Day. The food was decent (scallops were good, steak was chewy), but not worth the price. The ambiance was very nice, and the restaurant is a little hidden which adds to the appeal. I might come back for drinks or an appetizer and to enjoy the ambiance but not for an overpriced (small portion) entree.
Only place I know of in North County where all of the sushi chefs are from Japan, and it shows. The quality is outstanding, and everyone is very pleasant. Only two problems: 1) it's quite expensive, so be prepared, and 2) a reservation doesn't guarantee you where you'll sit (inside, outside, sushi bar, etc.). We were apparently going to be put outside, but I didn't know that - fortunately another couple wanted to sit outside, so we switched with them. So be sure to ask if you have a preference. And a minor quibble - they aren't very accommodating about changes in menu items, if you (dis)like certain food. For example, they had one item on their special Valentine's menu that I wanted to try, but didn't want the whole prix fixe menu - sorry, can't have it separately, at any price. Since that's an American thing and not common in Japan, I just rolled with it and ordered something else.
Shimbashi is the best place in San Diego for fresh fish/sashimi and sushi
To start the Tuna Galore, all Blue Fin Tuna in four different presentations on one platter, perfect way to start and share amongst friends.
Koshikari Beer or sake sampler pairs well
I always look forward to my visit to Shimbashi and it will be your favorite soon, give them a try if you haven't yet.
The sushi is original and very fresh and tasty, also priced accordingly. One of the specials we really wanted to taste had sold out and so was unavailable when we were there. The restaurant was tricky to locate within the shops complex and was quite busy for dinner, with tables spaced fairly close together. The noise level was moderate and it was not hard to have a conversation. The staff hurried us a bit at the end as they needed the table for other guests. All in all I had a good meal but didn't feel that I got good value, so would try another place next time.
Customer service lacking. My wife and I always get our sushi rolls without rice we can eat more sushi without the rice filler. We even always ask first and say right away we don't care if the rolls are a little messy and fall apart since the rice holds things together. Heck, it even gets the places more money since we buy way more rolls that way.
Harney Sushi in Old Town, Big Bang Sushi in RB, Sushi on the Rock...no problem. Even though some of them were worried about it, they all tried and succeeded. This place..."No, chef cannot do it. Would you like to order something else". It wasn't even that busy that they didn't have the time to try.
Thankfully, Pacifica Del Mar wasn't too busy so after downing the sake taster flight and the appetizer we had ordered we paid our check and went there and had an excellent Yellowtail Hamachi that somewhat quenched our sushi craving.
I give the place two stars since they had a fun sake list and the root salad appetizer was tasty. But there is a saying in business that the customer is always right so next time try to listen and try to help with a request.
I've been going here for years! Great food and really fresh sushi. Over the past 5+ years, I gotten to know the staff and they provided the BEST service in town!! Ever since they all have left and new management took over......it's been awful! We don't go as often as we would like, the only reason we go back is for the FOOD! BUt I don't know how many more times we can go spend money for horrible service. It took 10 min to get a drink and they started bringing out food before the drinks. Not to mention, why would the 1 bartender have to bring out the drinks to the table when they're busy??? They need NEW Management....ASAP!
Impressive dishes, chef put his heart making each dish. Service varies between different servers, and time/day, but at the minimum above most of American chain restaurants; Great view and validated parking in the busy area do compensate the inconsistent service, nevertheless.
The food at Shimbashi Izakaya is just excellent. The Sushi is tender and tasty. We have eaten at many Japanese restaurants in Del Mar, Carmel Valley and La Jolla, and Shimbashi Izakaya is definitely the best (in our opinion).
They have Asahi and Sapporo beer on draught and a good Sake selection.
We had friends from out of town and wanted a great view and Sushi. shimbashi did not disappoint as the service was perfect, the selection of Japanese cuisine for both Sushi lovers and those who were not was incredible. We had a birthday as well and the staff let us bring a cake and candles and didn't charge a cake fee! So to sum up our celebratory dinner- excellent view, incredible food, great staff.
I've been going to this restaurant for years now, and I used to know most of the staff and Manager/owner before it changed over this year! Unfortunately, since the change in Manager/owner, FOOD is def still good........service and upbeat atmosphere has all gone downhill! We still go because it's close, view is great but a big reason I dine is for the service as well! I just hope they figure this out and start making some changes because Shimbashi is not like it used to be! All set aside, I highly recommend it for great sushi!
Quality and presence of food was great. Love the "tapas-style" menu along with a great sushi menu. Plenty of Saki, beer and wine options. Was a bit noisy on the outside dining area (right next to busy street) but it has a nice ocean view. Price point is consistent with the quality of food but not cheap. Staff was courteous and prompt. Overall, for a first visit, it was a nice experience. I'll go back again.
First, you must know where they're located because you will not find it easily. We got to the plaza at 5:40 (happyhour ends at 6:00) We didn't find the place until 5:50. Once we arrived we let them know the difficulty of finding them.
As soon as we sat down, we informed the waitress we wanted to see the HH menu. She abruptly said, "Happy hour ends in 5 mins!" Well, ok, but, we still have 5 mins to order from the HH menu....right? I would think that they would be considerate of people getting lost getting there, and cut then a little slack on the time.
We eat here several times a month. Large menu, excellent food, regional cuisine at times. Large selection of saki. Beautiful setting and good attentive service. Our friends from Tokyo dined with us and loved the food, spoke to staff in Japanese and gave them a go to place when in SD.
My husband is not a sushi fan. Every year on my birthday he agrees to go to sushi bar and only once a year. This time he actually enjoyed it and like dhte food and Sakii. He even said we could go every month or so . It doesn'tseem like much but we truly enjoyed our evening and look forward t oour next visit,
