Shimbashi Izakaya Ratings and Reviews
Beautiful view so try to visit during daylight. Either way evenings on the patio is romantic too w/ the quietness & lanterns. Good date spot.
Food isn't memorable. High end prices but not particularly good eats. Still good, just nothing unique.
Service is kind but too sparse. Would have liked a bit more attentiveness, would have ordered more but no one was around.
Overall a cute quiet spot in Del Mar.
There are expensive restaurants where the high prices are acceptable because the food and service are above average. Then there are overpriced restaurants where you feel ripped off when you leave. Unfortunately, Shimbashi Izakaya is the latter. The food, beverages and service were mediocre and the prices were outrageous. The sake prices in particular were ridiculous with the least expensive small (very small) carafe at $25. We will not be returning.
Our waitress worked very hard, but I think they were short-staffed! We had to ask for our appetizer to be brought out and it didn't arrive till after we had finished our main course. The food was unremarkable with the exception of the tuna poke which was great! I think that the outdoor seating area was fun, but it was so crowded with tables that I had to push into other diners "spaces" just to scrunch through.
Overall it was great but I had made a reservation and there were empty tables outside but she did not want to seat is here as "they were reserved". The app never gave me a chance to request a table outside; otherwise I would have done so. We ended up siting outside and missing a nice evening out.
We had a great experience dining at Shimbashi Izakaya. The food is excellent and they have wide selection of authentic Japanese dishes. The restaurant is located in Del Mar, with beautiful views and ambiance. The service was excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant.
It turned out to be a really warm Sunday when we had our dinner there. The sun was really strong and it was hot hot hot but we really wanted to sit on the patio and enjoy the scenery. When we arrived there was only one or maybe two tables occupied and a few sun umbrellas placed around the patio. We were shown to a 2-person table and as we weren't getting any shade at all we asked the server if she could move any of the many umbrellas standing around shading empty tables to give us some relief instead but she just apologized and said no. Ok, fine, we stayed where we were and had our food. However as more patrons arrived and many whom wanted to sit outdoors but complained about the sun and asked the servers to move or adjust the umbrellas and the servers did. Finally after about an hour of baking under the hot sun we finally had some partial shade thanks to other diners.
Other than that the service was good. Very prompt, they were all very friendly and we got our orders pretty fast. We do think the price is on the high side as the food was good but not amazing and even though most of our orders were made during the special hour (therefore lower prices) and we had the email for 20% discount, it still came up to about $100. Definitely wouldn't eat there at normal prices.
The sushi counter at Shimbashi Izakaya was a fun, delicious experience. I am told that it is authentic to the sushi counters in Japan but I have never been. I can tell you that I would recommend the sushi counter to anyone who is looking to laugh and meet new interesting people.
The food was great. I had sushi but also tried a breaded pork, sake and soup. All were high quality.
It was our first time at Shimbashi Izakaya. We chose this restaurant based on good reviews and our experience in summary was not good at all. The restaurant has a small pretty patio, and orientation of tables makes their service and going in and out for customers difficult.
Taking our order took long but having what we order took way longer than we expect. Our waitress tried to deliver us three times wrong orders which were for other tables and everytime we repeated our order. Meanwhile for the table behind us she was handing over plates to a guest instead of serving to them.
When we got our foods, our waitress even didn't check everything is OK before leaving; instead I had to wait a bit and asked for chopsticks. I was expecting a good quality sushi, what we got a terrible quality fish both for roll and nigiri. Beef tongue we ordered came after 15 minutes we finished our first two order. It should be a tender meat, but what we ate was something else, was not tender at all. Overall the food is pretty pricy here in terms of quality and amounts. When we asked the check we saw extra charged item, Edamame. I asked it to be removed, and we got no excuse or sorry words. We got a terrible service, poor quality food at a pretty high price. I would suggest you to stay away this restaurant because they have to learn first restaurant management before asking these high prices.
This restaurant is overrated on yelp. The sushi is mediocre and the rest of the food were blunt. It was my first time and would be the last. Pricey but doesn't match the taste of the food. The only thing that is nice is the outside sitting - nothing else.
I was really disappointed.
