Shimbashi Izakaya Ratings and Reviews
We had three different sushi rolls and one of them we had to return because it was very fishy but the other two were delicious. They were very nice and didn't charge us for the one we returned and the service was wonderful. We will definitely come back. Sunset would be perfect at this place!!
Wonderful location and menu. Much to choose from between appetizers, sushi rolls, shared plates, etc. Sushi rolls are more classic - that is not overly large so it is a little pricey. But the flavors are amazing and it allows you to take a piece in a single bite without stuffing your face. Appetizers are a great assortment and there is nothing we didn't love.
Good outdoor seating option with a nice ocean view. We sampled a number of dishes, both sushi and others, and every one was delicious! You can order a sake sampler if you want to try/compare a few. A bit pricey, but we had fun. Loud party of 8 next to us was the only down side.
Three of us sat outside for dinner on a Saturday night. Friendly and attentive service, mostly delicious food, great sunset. The "mostly" qualifier is because it was tough to distinguish a couple of the sashimi selections by flavor. The fish might have pre-sliced and put into a refrigerated area prior to the night's opening. But it was fresh and even appealing to the person in our group with limited sashimi experience. We also had pork shumai, vegetable tempura, and hamachi kamma. All excellent.
Went in to try the restaurant for their Sake Bar and just loved the experience. Good list of Sake and other drinks and the servers are very nice and courteous. Besides the amazing Sake collection, the food is also great. Being a vegetarian, I thought there would be nothing for me at an authentic sushi place, but to my surprise there were quite a few options for both appetizers and main-course and they tasted pretty good as well. The fried tofu was really amazing - very soft and fresh inside and well crispy outside.
Food quality was good, most items priced accordingly. Went in for dinner at 9, and had to have everything ordered by 920. They did last call on us at 915. Server was nice but come on why take a 9 pm reservation and at you close at 10. Just take 8 pm as your last an you should be out by 10 if that's your goal.
This was our first experience at Shimbashi Izakaya. The meal was outstanding! They offer an extensive selection of sake as well. We stayed with the sushi and sashimi and shared the Chef's Choice Sashimi and the Assorted Sushi Platter. The fish was very fresh and nicely presented. We did enjoy one additional roll - La Fresca Roll. The cilantro added a great flavor to the spicy tuna and avocado. The table next to us was enjoying soft shell crab and the udon miso broth. Both also looked excellent.
We will definitely return the next time we are in the San Diego area.
What a disappointment! Figuring we were in Del Mar and that every place was great we were in the mood for sushi and tried here. First course (carpaccio platter) was fishy all around and it was down hill from there. Nothing tasted fresh. Don't waste your money.
Shimbashi Izakaya was my son's first choice as a place to have his family celebration for his 15th birthday so we booked for our 2 teens, my husband and myself. We ordered a variety of dishes that we shared and everything was beautifully presented and tasted fantastic. It was a sunny evening so dining on the balcony with ocean views was as added treat. Service was prompt and friendly and we had a wonderful family dinner.
Sushi chef Ike is amazing and the sushi was all excellent. We ordered a $120 bottle of saki, after talking to the waitress. There was also a bottle for $170, but it was not the same saki and she knew we didn't want that one. When we finished the saki, we asked for a carafe of the same saki we were drinking, it was listed on the menu. She said they didn't have a carafe, but we could get a half bottle. So we said okay to the half bottle. The bottle was smaller then the first, so we had no reason to question what we were getting. When we received our bill we were charged $170 for the second bottle of saki. I said that we did not order that saki, she wouldn't budge, she said that is what I brought you. Even the sushi chef was shocked. Unfortunately we will not be going back there. That was not right. Bad business.
