Shells and Sauce Ratings and Reviews
The restaurant shouldn't seat anyone at the table where people congregate waiting for a table. Who wants someone's butt hanging over your plate as you eat? Literally. Way too loud to have a conversation too.
This might be a nice restaurant if you go during the off hours -- either really really early or really really late.
We had a bad experience and it's really disappointing because it was my Dad's 89th birthday celebration -- we only get one of those. We couldn't talk, we had people staring into our plates and talking over our conversation and virtually leaning on our table all night.
Very disappointed with my entree. Had been looking forward to my fav "Shells & Sauce Veal Parm" for days. Presentation was not at all appealing. Looked like it had been sitting in a cafeteria pan for days. Cheese on top had zero appeal, not a sign of yummy hot stringy mozz. Food temp: somewhat warm. The brussel sprouts were delicious. My friend ordered the Haibut special. It was a lovely presentation and very tasty. Our server & service in general was excellent.
Meatballs to die for. Everything else so so. Lasagna was mostly meat and macaroni and for $19 was a rip off. Had reservations through open table and did not get seated for 45 minutes after reservations. Finally sat us upstairs and it was cold and drafty as hell. Been there and done that would not go back. It is a very rustic, tell the truth it is a dump inside and charge fine dining prices.
We live in LoDo so taking a short Uber to S&S makes it a bit of a "destination" for us. But the excellent food and VALUE brings us there often. The food is FLAVORFUL! The Bread has a crisp crust and soft warm inside with a dipping sauce that is on Steroids. The Sea Bass special , on a flavorful Shrimp Risotto was as fresh and flavorful as any in the City. The"Diavalo Shrimp" it is definitely spicy, but my wife orders it every time we are there. Portions were generous, the Wine (Cab Franc) was smooth and very reasonably priced (as is all their wine). The dining room can be a bit crowded, but the efficient and friendly Wait staff makes it a comfortable experience!
Excellent food and very engaged server
Lots of food!
May wish to get one order for two
None of us at our table, after eating appetizers, was able to finish our meal which left us in no condition to consider dessert
Do not bring anyone who speaks quietly
The noise level is high
Shells and Sauce gets top ratings from the Gabby Gourmet so much is expected. The food was good but the portions were gigantic. This is a turnoff for me as I'm not a fan of leftovers or food waste. The noise level also meant it was hard to have a conversation with the person across the table.
Have been going here for many years and have never been disappointed. The food is exceptional! Fresh, seasonal and creative. Attentive staff and cool atmosphere (but not in a "hipster-nonsense way") and tucked into a very convenient charming neighborhood in Congress Park. Whether it's a special occasion dinner or small plates after a movie, they've got you covered.
We arrived behind another couple. The host asked both our parties the name on our reservation. As he walked away to seat the first couple, he said we must be his 4-top, and gestured to the table.
Our server was very nice, and came to the table promptly. After the rest of our party arrived, we placed our orders. When the food arrived, one of the entrees was wrong. The correct order came as the rest of us were finishing our meals. The server was very apologetic, but didn't offer anything for the inconvenience, like a free drink, dessert, or even taking the order off the bill. Many other places would have done that.
The food isn't bad, but I will not go back. And, I will not recommend it to my friends.
I am giving Shells and Sauce a 3 Star because I enjoyed my meal but they messed up my husband’s. My husband’s order was wrong and they took so long to remake it that everyone else was done. The waiter was not knowledgeable about the menu since he was pretty new and we had been there many times before. I enjoyed my meal and so did the people we were with though. I’ve always enjoyed it here.
I was a little upset Saturday evening I had booked reservations for 8 PM. I got there early did not get seated until later than 8 PM. As I said down I order my mail and it wasn’t until 9:30 PM that I have not received my dinner. I was a little upset and had to walk out. I understand this place gets very busy but an hour and a half or your food is a little overboard
I have eaten here a couple of times now. It's in what used to be a middle class neighborhood but is now more upscale. The actual restaurant is in an old garage.
We arrived for your 7:15 p.m. reservation but had to wait 10 minutes to be seated. They put way too many tables in this restaurant, so there was very little room to wait, and the bar was full. Waiters kept telling us we were in the way but there was not place else to stand.
I had the baked rigatoni, which was very good, but don't eat here if you're claustrophobic
