Shelby's, in Orinda, crafts elevated and contemporary Continental and California fusion cuisine made with fine ingredients in its friendly and bright restaurant. The organic sweet potato chips with a mild chipotle dip and the breaded fried brie in a chipotle-strawberry glaze with warm baguette make most welcoming starter options. Some of Shelby's specialty entrée dishes include the slow-roasted Asian baby back ribs in a tangy marinade, the seafood paella with saffron rice, chicken, seafood and vegetables in a tasty broth and the black forest pizza topped with ham, bacon bits, cheese and caramelized onions. For a sweet end to your meal, the cold blueberry soup with vanilla ice cream won't steer you wrong.
Shelby's also serves a fully organic breakfast, when you can indulge such plates as the California omelette with turkey, avocado, cheese and roasted fingerling potatoes and the croissant French toast with vanilla custard and strawberries.
I eat here often and it is always good. I had the beet salad and it was delicious and well presented.
Being of Central European origin, I was delighted that this restaurant offers at least two German/Hungarian dishes. Part of this is that the co-owner is from Germany (in fact, had a nice chat with him in German). The goulash with spaetzle is outstanding, as was the carrot soup. The chocolate mousse is as good as we've ever had. For me with hearing issues, the noise level seemed a bit high but not for my wife - nevertheless, a little noise mitigation (like carpeting or ceiling treatment) might help, on the other hand, it is appreciated that the tables are not real close together. Parking is in the building garage and disabled access is fairly easy. Definitely will want to visit again.
Too little food for price. No jam or jelly except for a pineapple spread.
Restaurant has no ambiance. No tablecloths in the evening. Was like going to a cheap diner.
Food was so so.
I had the salmon salad, and the salmon was two pathetic little pieces of salmon.
There was some kind of melted cheese on top that I could not cut with my knife- or when I picked it up could not bite into it either
I should have sent it back it was horrible
Wonderful food and service
Food was acceptable, the server generally was accommodating, but when a group of five requests bread it would be nice if they brought five pieces of bread instead of four. Our reservations were for 7:30, and they close at 9:00, so when 9:00 came they made it extremely obvious it was time for us to leave - opening the double doors so the temperature dropped and sweeping the floor.
Shelby's is a good location and has decent food, but customer service needs to be improved...
Great neighborhood feel. Great food. Great service.
Delightful atmosphere with delicious food. Lots of healthy choices beautifully plated. We will be back for sure!
This was our second visit and we weren’t disappointed. The server was attentive and knowledgeable, the cocktails perfectly mixed, the meal a delight for the four of us. We won’t hesitate to return!
Our server was very polite and efficient.
We didn’t want a heavy meal and we had to be out in an hour. Consequently, we all had the delicious mango and chicken salad.
Restaurant was closed for a private party. Our reservation was not honored.
I Really like the food here. There is a nice unique twist to most everything. Arno brings a great european flavor to Orinda. Where else can you get spaetzle around here? Great lamb and grilled romaine salads for lunch. We’ll be back for both lunch and dinner.
Paleo friendly - I had a chicken mango salad that was scrumptious! They also have fish, steak and vegetarian dishes. It is a small restaurant on the Theatre Square in Orinda.
I think the stars say it for me! Very good restaurant and I loved my peach salad!
Shelby's is very accessible, having a parking structure below and being a 5-minute walk from the Orinda BART station. The restaurant is open, with the tables not jammed together and lots of windows to lighten the room. There is also some seating outside. The staff are friendly, helpful and do not rush you. We had a 2-1/2 hour meal, and never felt pressured to leave. The noise level was pleasantly low. The menu has quite a few interesting options, and the prices are reasonable. The food was well prepared and delivered promptly. Definitely worth a visit.
Terrific food in a casual, friendly atmosphere! The staff is attentive and professional.
We had a very nice time at Shelby's and sitting outside with our service dog was perfect. Food was very good and server was good but had to be reminded about several things. It was a gathering of friends of Keith Sexton who passed away five years ago. He came to Shelby's at least once a week. I joined him there and we always had a good meal and service was terrific. Thanks again and will see you again in the future.
Love this place! And their beautiful new bar and new flooring and new tables and chairs make it even more special. I’ll be back soon.
We went on Mother’s Day, so I was prepared to cut them some slack. But our well-meaning waitress couldn’t get anything right. Orders came without key side dishes. Eggs specifically ordered soft came as hard as hockey pucks. The “tomato juice” was bloody Mary mix, which I wouldn’t have ordered had I known. The toast came cold and unbuttered, cold, with cold butter cubes next to it. Only one of our party of four enjoyed his order. Very disappointing!
This was a fun unexpected experience. The food was great as with the service. We were able to sit outside on a way spring day
Service was terrible as we had to get serving people to get service
The food was good. We started with the Shrimp &Chorizo.. the shrimp was slightly over cooked, but the flavors worked well together. I had the Steak FritesThe staff was friendly- but the service a bit slow for the amount of tables they had.
Great menu, great service, great food. The artichoke appetizer was great, and the warm dishes were great on a cool day. The menu was creative without being silly, and the portions were substantial. Can't wait to go back!
This was the second time I visited Shelby. The experience was completely opposite of my first visit.
Reservation was given to another, noise level high, waited an hour for our order. I will try Shelby one more time.
The prices have gone up and the quality has declined since our last visit. The wonderful children's vegetable plate is gone, replaced by an awful chicken "dinosaur nuggets" concoction which is quite bad. The crab salad sandwich tasted like imitation crab. The service was good and the ambiance is pleasant. On the whole, not much to recommend it any longer, especially given the prices ($19.50 for the crab salad sandwich).
Came to Orinda to attend a concert at the theater and grabbed a bite before at Shelby's. It was a very casual place at the corner around from the theater. I had the impossible veggie burger and the husband had the 1/2 chicken. We both enjoyed our meals. The fries with mine were especially great, but all the food was tasty and moderately priced. Service was friendly and helpful. Would return the next time in the area.
This place is a neighborhood gem with an extensive, eclectic menu and attentive, friendly staff.
Really yummy food, not overdone. Great friendly service. Will def go back.
Fantastic salad and great service. Very friendly. I had the Chicken Ceasar which had a wonderful balsamic vinegar reduction dressing. Very original dish with grilled lettuce.
Arno, chef/owner, is creative with recipes and presentation. He has hired servers who are pleasant and knowledgable and welcoming.
Shelby's is consistently fine dining. The menu changes which we find refreshing. Excellent beverage and dessert options add to the lovely overall experience.
The staff was very kind but the food was lackluster.
Best dinner option in Orinda before a movie.
Every time at Shelby's is a fantastic time, with their excellent they always love it. It's on the same block as the theatre, which makes it the perfect restaurant for pre- or post-movie dining.
Excellent menu! ALWAYS tasty! Arno really knows how to create, present and keep things interesting!
Lovely! Will goback
Horrible. Do NOT come her ever. Just don’t. Food is inedible, service is awful.
Great dinner with family. We had 4 adults and 3 kids with us, who all found something on the menu they liked: Pasta and burgers.
Had the artichoke appetizer and sweet potato chips to start. Crispy, yummy chips and perfectly steamed artichoke.
We tried dick quesadilla, trout, lamb... everything was yummy and served hot, timely for a busy Saturday night.
Had lunch with my wife and we both ordered their crab salad sandwich. They were outstanding! Very generous portion, light mayo, delicately spiced. Best we've ever had. Good service. Wine portions a bit skimpy for the price. Servers seemed to pour, and looking around it looked like portions varied. (When are American restaurants going to adopt a standard portion size for beverages like the rest of the world?) Anyway, I digress. Very pleased with Shelby's and will be back.
