About

Shangri-La Nepalese & Indian Cuisine offers traditional Indian and Nepalese with a modern twist, using fresh local organic produce, tender meats, poultry and seafood and exotic spices. At Shangri-La Nepalese & Indian Cuisine, diners can enjoy the customary offerings one would expect, like tikka masala, butter chicken, shrimp vindaloo and more, or for a special taste sensation try the Shangri-La mixed grill which consists of seekh kabab, tandoori chicken, fish and shrimp cooked in the traditional fashion in the restaurant's clay oven.

Of course, no meal would be complete without bread, and at Shangri-La Nepalese & Indian Cuisine, a dozen different breads are baked daily on-site. If you can't decide, go with the assorted bread basket.

Went for my son and my joint birthday dinner. The server/restaurant manager was very accommodating and entertained my children so they were never idle. The food was equally enjoyable. Would definitely return.

I visit a restaurant by myself before inviting a guest. Unfortunately, this is not one to which I will invite anyone. Even though I told the host/server that I had a reservation, he did not even look at it to check my preferences, a window table, nor did he check me in. The decor lacks a recognizable style, the service alternates between intrusive and negligent, the ingredients in the food are not balanced---one ingredient in each dish overwhelmed the other ingredients. There are only five wines by the glass, all from the same winery--Bonterra.

We (family of five adults) love the food at Shangri-La. The menu choices range from vegetarian to goat for the adventurous, mild and subtle to incendiary, naan is freshly made on location. The service is friendly and low-key. Children are welcomed.

We chose this restaurant because of the vegan choices on the menu, and the food turned out to quite good, although the portions were rather small. Maybe we have been spoiled by the generous portions at Spice Xing, but the portions seemed kind of small. The main impression we left with, however, was the poor service. Our waiter spilled lots of water, spilled soup, forgot to bring the iced tea my wife ordered, and forgot to bring the bread basket our guests ordered. And whenever anyone from the kitchen came out, they could not seem to understand what dishes they had on their trays, so when we said Such and Such goes here, they would motion for the waiter to come over. And when the waiter did come over, he forgot who had ordered what.

I am planning a trip to Nepal and wanted to sample Nepalese food. It was good! While the menu is mostly Indian, the Nepalese offerings were delicious. I love the presentation in the small copper bowls. The staff was very nice and called me immediately when I left my credit card there by mistake. Another benefit of making Open Table reservations (so they had my phone number)!

Out for a birthday dinner with family. Dining room was easily accessible for grandma and her walker. Food selections were varied, and everything we tried was wonderful. Wine choices were good. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly, without being overbearing. The only thing I did not like was the bread with dips provided. Both were too spicy and peppery to eat.

I ordered a chicken curry that came with rice. I found chunks of either soggy or partly burnt rice in the rice bowl. I told them and they gave me a fresh bowl. That was OK (no chunks) but not great. The chicken curry was fine.

This was the first time I had been to the restaurant for dinner. The lunch buffet is always great. Dinner was just as good. The restaurant was a little empty, but it was a Monday night when I went. Overall, great Indian food!

Ate at Shangri-La with some work colleagues and as usual, the food did not disappoint. We had a variety of starters and mains, and the wonderful serving staff asked the chef to prepare an off-menu vegetarian dish which was fabulous. Meat dishes were cooked great and the bread basket was delicious and buttery. Good wine list, friendly and attentive service, and the staff even sat patiently while our leisurely table closes the place down. Well always return here and highly recommend for great Indian food.

Beautifully and tastefully prepared food. Samosas were very good as was the dipping sauce. Lamb vindaloo is very spicy, not for the faint of palate.

Very diverse menu of food entrees, breads, & appetizers. Very attentive, congenial, pleasant waiter. My entree of chicken, spinach, & rice curry dish was very ample and tasty. Had the option to request a mild version of the curry as opposed to being restricted only to a hot and spicy flavored offering. Would return for lunch or dinner. Would highly recommend to friends & associates who like Indian cuisine.

Husband and I had the two-person sampler package and it was really amazing. Just a little taste of several different menu items. The price was right and the food was delicious. Great service and since it's not in the main strip of Bethesda, it was just the right amount of crowded!

No, Shangri La isn't on Woodmont Street. It's on Wisconsin at Montgomery Ave, which must be the reason it's less known than many Bethesda spots whose food is nowhere near as good and whose cost is far higher.

We went to Shangri La for Mother's Day and were not disappointed. This was our first time here and believe me, we will be going back. The food was amazing and the servers top-notch! The restaurant is small but not crowded...and everyone seemed happy probably because the food was so satisfying. If you are a lover of Indian cuisine, this is the place for you. They told us that they only use organic vegetables and greens...so delicious. Do not go to Bethesda without stopping in!

Food was good but the service was erratic. I tried to ask what the "*" meant on the menu and the waiter just didn't understand my question after three attempts. They also mis-understood what one person ordered (she wanted a Salad but got a Sala something) and forgot one dish for another person (but fortunately we had enough food). I suggest they consider adding item numbers to the menu (like many Chinese restaurants do) or at least writing the order down and confirming it back to the customer. We like the house wine.

We love Indian food, so the Indian/Nepalese menu sounded good and we decided to give them a try. We were not disappointed. We tried dished from all sections of the menu -- all were at least good, most were excellent. To top it all, they told us they use organic vegetables & greens. Dish size was big enough that we had a doggy bag to take home.

We will be going back. Hopefully, the place will not be mobbed after this glowing review.

This one of the few places in the DC metro area that serve Nepali food.

My wife and I both ordered and shared non vegetarian Thali's. I forget their exact names, but one was essentially the Nepali Thali and the other was the Indian Thali. They were delicious and plentiful, giving us leftovers for the next day.

The service was good.

The decor was the weakest part. Its like the designer couldn't decide on a theme so he used multiple themes. Some parts were fancy. Some parts were drab. Another part had a hut like structure. They didn't all blend together. Honestly, though, decor is not big deal.

The place was rather empty for a 9:00 Friday. Hopefully business will pick up.

Solid, well-prepared Indian food with fresh ingredients. Nothing was over the top special, but everything was very good. Seasonings/flavors are balanced. The menu has a good variety of both vegetarian and flesh items. Service was pleasant and attentive.

Don't let the empty tables fool you--I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Both my friend and I ordered vegetarian entrees that were delicious. The Momo was a delightful appetizer (dumplings with Nepalese sauce). I definitely plan to go back.

It was a great surprise to find an authentic Nepal cuisine in Bethesda.
It is very difficult to find an Indian or Nepal restaurant, which serves good soups any where in the USA. We have tried tomato and Malligathawny soup, and both were wonderful.
Other great dish is butter chicken. It is a traditional Nepal dish and it was very very good.
If we have a chance to visit Bethesda, this will be the first choice.

After discovering that the Indian restaurant I had hoped to go to is closed for a few more weeks, and after reading numerous reviews of alternatives, I finally settled upon this place as a second choice. I was not disappointed. Things got off on a good foot when the manager offered not only to change my bills for quarters for the nearby metered parking lot but to actually pay for my parking. The service was excellent all around. My lamb saag was outstanding, as was my companion's tandoori-cooked salmon--an Indian inspired take on a non-Indian dish. The restaurant serves a modest, reasonably priced selection of Indian and domestic beers as well as wines by the glass and the bottles. Tables are attractively set with white tablecloths.

The service was good, our waiter was polite. When we requested to sit at another table (other then the one he point to)he was willing to allow us to sit the other table. The wine list was "OK",we were able to find a bottle which we really liked and it was the last bottle of the particular wine and our first choice. My girlfriend and I were on date and the restaurant was full but not to noise for a Friday night. We recommend Shangri La.

If you are looking for excellent, authentic Indian food, without a lot of fuss or high prices, this is a great choice. The service is warm and friendly, the portions are generous and it appears to be a family-owned business. The decor is very basic and simple, but the menu is definitely not. There's an extremely wide variety of choices here, including Nepalese cuisine and a fair number of vegetarian choices. We had an excellent dinner here and it is basically right across the street from the movie theater on Wisconsin in Bethesda, which makes it a perfect choice for a low-key date night or family dinner. The lamb was delicious and is recommended.

The food at Shangri-La is excellent and the wait staff is very courteous. Our party of four had a very nice meal and we didn't need to shout to hear one another, which is more typical of restaurants in the Washington area.
