Amazing food and atmosphere. The music was equally as good as the food, definitely will be back
I really enjoyed the good food and good music. The people work there including the owner are very friendly and nice. They are very accommodating. I would definitely recommend this place to all of my friends.
We enjoyed a most lovely evening at Shanghai Jazz in Madison! The music was outstanding and the food really delicious, something so unusual for a jazz club, as most in the city charge a lot for less than stellar food.
This was our second time and we will definitely be back! 🤩🤩👍👍
Loved this place! The restaurant isn't large so you get a very intimate space with great music and food, Definitely recommend.
Wonderful experience, music was spectacular and new owner Tom was very accommodating outgoing and friendly!
An opportunity to see world class musicians for very little (no cover, $25 minimum during the week; $40 on the weekend), which, since you're getting dinner means the music is free.
I wouldn't go back. The music was not good and the service was poor.
This was my 3rd visit to Shanghai Jazz. The first two visits were with larger groups, but this was just me and a colleague. We scheduled our visit to coincide with a performance. The food was amazing, the white wine was chilled to perfection and our servers were all attentive, hospitable and fun-loving. The owner/manager also stopped by a few times to check on us. This has got to be one of my new favorite places.
Eric Comstock was excellent. There should be some sort of sound barrier at the rear of the performance room. The folks there were much too noisy.
We were there to hear the jazz band....the upper room was very loud but overall it was a wonderful experience and would come back!!
Great music to accompany a really good meal. We were a little disappointed when we asked for some Chinese noodles and they had none.
There is a $25 minimum/person in lieu of a music charge (during weekdays-higher on the weekend) but there is no problem meeting that requirement once you see the menu.
We came for the delicious food and the jazz entertainment. We were not disappointed. Tom runs a classy establishment, blending fine dining with a fun atmosphere. We will certainly return and recommend Shanghai Jazz.
Food and service were wonderful as always
Awesome music, service and food as always!
Not what it used to be. New owner. It’s lost it’s unique character. A jazz club that doesn’t deliver jazz. A lame excuse by the owner that the featured act mixed up the date and he was trying to find a replacement at the time the show was Supposed to start. Really?? How about confirming your gigs in advance. How about calling patrons to tell them there would be no show due to a mix up. Very disappointed. To add insult to injury they were out of their delicious crispy noodles. Again, really?? On a Saturday night. Get it together people. No longer a fan.
Always enjoy this spot. Had the pleasure to hear something different with a Latin quarter and the singers voice was like dark chocolate and silk! Food is always good as well although the three chili chicken wasn’t quite spicy enough or even as spicy as the name suggests. Had the spicy wings for appetizer and the sauce was delicious. The firecracker beef is always my favorite. Dessert was warm brownie with vanilla ice cream and for a $9 dessert i was hoping for something a little bigger or more indulgent. I will go back of course because where else can you enjoy live jazz and delicious Chinese food?!
Excellent food and restaurant. The music was perfect!
Amazing food. Excellent performance. Drinks are uniquely crafted and delicious. Definitely will return!
Fabulous jazz spot, very lucky to have it in North Jersey! Food is good but not worthy of 5 stars.
Haven't been in a while, but happy I visited the other day. I've always had terrific meals here and the service and entertainment has been top notch. I just hadn't gone out in a while.
Had a two-person business dinner. My colleague hadn't heard of SJ and was really impressed with the experience. Food presentation was superb and, of course, the food itself was too. Performers were very nice - just the perfect pitch and volume.
Great musical venue, food OK, on the expensive side.
We have been to Shanghai Jazz 3 times in the past month and half. Each time the food was not so good. The dumplings were overcooked, the pad thai was bland and tasteless, the ribs dry with no sauce. The jicama salad had no real dressing on it. This is disappointing because we adore King Solomon HIcks and all the other artists you have had. You have a gem there as a jazz club but the food has gone down hill.
Doris, I am sorry to hear of your unfortunate experiences recently. We are beginning a fairly dramatic revamping of the menu this coming week. This will take some time, however, to fully execute given a significant language barrier between my cooks and I. I do hope you will come back and give us another opportunity to impress you in a few weeks once we have finished fine tuning our new menu.
ask for a bar table several days in advance and was told they didnt know if that was possible????
Great experience. If there are any shortcomings, the care and service by the Staff, along with the entertainment, more than overcompensates.
Consistently good every time. Service, music, food ... a favorite regular stop!
Liked the music and service. We would have like to see more variety in food, i.e. fruit for dessert, fewer fried entrees, more grilled meats
Food used to be fine. Now disappointing.
Always a great time! Excellent entertainment, very gracious hosts!
NYC-quality music minus the painful trip there and back! A great evening.
My husband and I are foody’s and jazz lovers. Top chef and business man, Tom Donohoe has taken over this hub of good jazz music and excellent food establishment in Madison, NJ. He’s growing what David and Martha Niu created continuing good music and now expanding the size of this special haven for music and creative food lovers. If you love both-you’ve got to check out Shanghai Jazz. The food and service, music and ambience are too notch! Brava Mr. Donohoe!
Have been 5 or 6 times, and always had a great time. Will be coming back.
Jazz was amazing with John Lee. Food and drinks well done as always.
Shanghai Jazz is a great place to go when you are looking for a great vibe and great food. Excellent!
Although we know its a jazz club, the noise level was off the charts! Forget about trying to converse with your table mate. It’s impossible. Our food which took a long time was cold when served to us. The waitress said our entrees will be on the house. But my husband asked for his to be heated up. What they brought back was a spicier version of what he originally ordered. He couldn’t eat it. Unfortunately our date night turned out to be a fiasco.
Fish not fresh
Soup too cold
Noodles too salty
Great place to see jazz. Food was good. Good date spot!
Great renovation and new vibe!
Musicians were outstanding
Great food, warm hospitality - great venue supporting live music in a quiet corner of town. World-class artistic talent in next-door joint. Great all the way around!
We had a great time. Band was awesome! We loved the drummer Purdie.
