Very slow service, food was very expensive for the quality served. Restaurant was so dark you couldn’t read the menu which was very limited considering the size of the restaurant. Hot and sour soup was the most bland and tasteless I have ever encountered. Most of the staff were polite, friendly and welcoming. Not sure if I’d come back.

Easily the best Chinese meal I have had outside China, when the server tells you you are ordering too much food, pay attention, we ordered more than we could eat. The quality, quantity, service and setting are fantastic.

As Vegans we were incredibly impressed by the choice and quality of the dishes we had!!! The ‘duck’ salad was my absolute favourite from a previous year and super excited it was still on the menu!! We enjoyed a beautiful honey and banana sake’ and a delicious oriental pearl cocktail !! We are returning with friends as many times as possible whilst we work at the Southampton Boat show

This is the second time we have eaten at Shanghai 1814 and it was just as good as the first with the added bonus that they noted it was my wife's birthday by giving her a delicious slice of cheesecake with a candle whilst singing happy birthday.

This is a fabulous establishment with gorgeous décor . Staff are polite and welcoming. The cocktails and mocktails are incredible and expertly made. And the food is authentic and delicious and there is much to choose from. These are not small portions either.

We ate here for the first time yesterday (27th August 2023). The food was good, the staff were friendly, the surroundings nice but unfortunately they really spoiled it by rushing us. We ordered one of the set menus and also bought drinks (one bottle of wine and a beer each). There was quite a lot of food to get through then when we got to the end of the meal, the waiter asked us if we wanted a dessert and I replied that we didn't, however we would like to order some drinks (as is our usual routine when eating out we wanted to rest and let our food settle with a digestif from the cocktails and spirits menu). To our great surprise the waiter at this point said that we couldn't stay at the table any longer as he needed to turn it around. He said we could have drinks at the 'nice seating area' near the door/bar (I think he gave it a name, but I can't recall it) and asked if we would like to order the drinks and then go over there. I said no, we wanted to check it out before ordering anything to drink. I'm glad we did as it was just a miniscule area with couple of little sofas just inside the door, which is actually the small holding area where they put people they are waiting to seat. Surprise surprise, it was full of customers waiting to be seated! This would have been utterly ridiculous situation for us to find ourselves in, like having a cocktail at a bus stop and I was very offended that they would have happily taken money from us for the drinks first then put us in such a substandard seating area like that, jammed in with the customers still waiting to be seated. Did they think we are morons? So we declined the offer, paid the bill and we left to find somewhere to have an after dinner drink. If there was a strict curfew of 1hr 45mins as we later realised then why ask us if we wanted a dessert? Where were we going to eat that? This was a huge disappointment and we won't return.

Service was terrible sadly, despite atleast 4 staff members standing there doing nothing. Our server was quite rude, as were the other staff members. Disappointed in comparison to the last time I came back in October 2022. A shame as we won’t be returning based on this experience. Asked for a standard dinner plate to eat my main on and they told me no, I’ve never heard of anything so ridiculous. My partner and I had to eat our mains off a side plate.

We ordered the set menu which was £45. My colleague and I can’t eat fish so we asked for the prawn toast to be substituted for another dish barbecue ribs. We were told it was an additional £1 extra charge and I do feel that after spending £170. It was a little bit petty, charging us an additional £2 And to capital, they charged me twice on the card, but to be fair, one only went through

Superb venue, beautiful and cosmopolitan styling backed up by stupendous cocktails and sublime food. Portion size was good, flavours on some dishes were truly world class and service was prompt and efficient. Nothing not to like. Prices we thought were in line with the quality of the food and drinks, this isn’t a all you can eat buffet kind of establishment but good quality, fine dining.

Amazing food, excellent and attentive service. We had a great date night and were able to enjoy a few delicious cocktails after dinner without once feeling like we were being expected to leave. We will recommend this restaurant to our friends and will definitely be back. Amazing vegetarian food!

An absolutely fantastic find. We stopped over in Southampton for the night before our cruise. So happy we did. The quality and presentation of the food was amazing. The staff friendly and polite. Traditional Chinese décor was accompanied by chilled out house music. No hesitation in recommending the restaurant to anyone.
