Shalimar Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We dined at Shalimar on a recent visit to Michigan. We met friends who are vegetarian, and we all agreed the food was delicious and very creative. The service was very good, and the atmosphere about what you'd expect from a college town Indian spot. If the restaurant was here in Denver, we'd return often.
Service was very friendly. The non vegetarian appetizer combo was of truly stellar quality, especially the chicken and the lamb. I was not overly enthusiastic about my entree, salmon with orange and ginger. The bread was really good, both the simple and the potato stuffed one.
Although the food was delicious, I don't intend on returning to this restaurant. We had chosen this location since they had a lunch buffet. Well, they had discontinued the buffet supposedly on the day we were there. It took 40 minutes for our lunch to come out after ordering. This is unacceptable for a work day lunch. Getting the check also took a while, and the staff wasn't very friendly. I was disappointed since I had been looking forward to going to this restaurant for weeks.
We love dining at Shalimar. We used to come only for special occasions but we found that we enjoyed having the Indian cuisine that they prepare dan deserve so well more often. It's always the first place I suggest when asked where I want to eat in Ann Arbor. We always order the Tandoori chicken. It never fails to delight us!
Food, as usual, was excellent. Medium spicy was tasty and not overbearing in terms of spiciness. Food came quickly, but our server disappeared and it was difficult finding him to pay and get boxes for leftovers. Given the prices, I expected better service. Still...will go back for the food.
The food was great as always, but we did wait a bit before getting a waiter and then the service was very slow after our food arrived. We waited about a half hour to get our bill, which then the manager helped us out. We appreciated the manager's help and he checked on us several times.
I took my wife to Shalimar for an anniversary dinner. We got seated and the waiter (unfriendly demeanor) came and asked if we would like any appetizers or anything to drink. We ordered just water and asked him to give us a few minutes . 10 minutes later a new waiter comes and says he's taking over and asked if we would like any appetizers or drinks . We said just water and we are ready to place our order. He said he would be right back with the water and to take our order. 10 minutes later no water no order taking . I get up and go to personally ask the host for water which then was finally brought over after 2 requests and 20 minutes. Rest of the evening we had all the water we asked for . Overall food was good , place was clean , service was below par , and I probably would go back and give them another shot. I expected better from this place for what you pay for dinner, Manager did walk over and apologize a few times and did not charge my wife and I for our 2 cokes we had with our meal.
Very nice atmosphere. Food was wonderful! The only critique would be our waiter's attitude was a little short. I felt a bit rushed to put in our order and he was not very welcoming. Maybe if the restaurant had been busy during our time there, I would somewhat understand a rush, but we were one of a handful there at the time. The other waitstaff were very friendly and helpful.
This was our first time at Shalimar, and we were very disappointed. While the food was delicious, our service was very poor. We were mostly ignored by our waiter. We waited thirty minutes after ordering our second round of drinks about two-thirds of the way through our meal, before tracking our waiter down to ask again about the request. Our drinks never came and we were never asked about whether we wanted dessert. The check was also not brought out until we chased someone down. The wait for our check was at least twenty minutes after our last interaction with the waiter about our missing drinks, and would likely have been longer if we hadn't been assertive in chasing the check down. At that point, we simply could not wait to leave the restaurant. It's a shame, because we were hoping to have a new "go to" place for high quality Indian food, but the whole experience was very unpleasant.
I went with my vegetarian wife to their Sunday brunch. The food was quite good, although there weren't as many vegetarian options as is typical for an Indian buffet. She got her fill, and I was able to enjoy everything. One standout is the naan - it is made to order so it comes out hot and fresh. We had the garlic naan, and it had generous portions of garlic on it - absolutely outstanding.
I enjoy Indian food and I would rate this as just OK. The location in downtown Ann Arbor is perfect and that's what is going for it. The service was nothing special and I noticed that the seating was arranged so that everyone was by the window to the street making people walking buy think that the restaurant was crowded and popular. Not true unfortunately. I would rate my server below average as I don't think he knew anything about the food, wine or menu items.
We had a savory and tasty vegetarian meal here! The vegetarian appetizer platter is excellent as well as the five lentil dal. We also had the potato and cauliflower. The garlic naan was a perfect counterpoint. The service was attentive and we were not rushed. Will return next time we are in the area.
I had not been back to Shalimar in a few years and was very pleased to discover that there are some terrific new dishes on the menu and lots of very flavorful vegetarian options: I really enjoyed the mixed vegetables in spicy coconut sauce. This is delicious, innovative Indian cuisine.
Have been there for Valentine's day! I did not find anything special about the food but it was costly. The Biryani was good but was pricey when compared with other biryani points. It was very noisy. The staff was talking loud than the customers. We were not that satisfied with the food but the ambiance was good!!
We live in Chicago but have visited Ann Arbor regularly of the past few years. Never miss Shalimar. Best Indian food we've ever encountered anywhere, up and down the menu. The service is impeccable and the staff very gracious and attentive. It's a "don't miss" in AA.
