Serai was closed for patio/outdoor dining. Disappointing given that we were not notified by OT/restaurant. A day earlier, I received a text to confirm my reservation. We opted for take out - Crab Rangoon, Spicy Wonton, Tom Yum Soup, Roti Paratha, Shrimp Sambhal & Nasi Goreng. It’s a hit or miss.
Serai was delicious! We were all happy with our dishes. I enjoyed the casual atmosphere and it definitely felt like a step up from your go to delivery spots. Service was timely but pretty casual, which is not a bad thing as long as you're not looking for an upscale spot. I would recommend for sure!
Friend gathering. They accommodated all 8 of us and helped us get enough food family style!
mango chicken-love it! service kind and attentive.
We've been to Serai many times since it opened and the goodness of its food is very consistent. I especially love their Roti appetizer. I only wish they would let us order extra roti (the bread) without having to buy a second appetizer order. The delicious chicken dipping stew is pretty generous and just begs for more roti to sop up its flavor.
Servers were very attentive, seats were very close to each other, and the room was dark. but as a Southeast Asian myself, a lot of the flavors were very close to home (though back home at a much lower price) but it was definitely a wonderful experience, and would definitely come back again!

The Hainanese Chicken was so good but the coconut pudding was the best in my memory!
The Hainanese Chicken is stunning and every dish we ordered is awesome, except for the Tom Yum Soup, a little bit plain compared to others. However, my friends and I didn't quite like the atmosphere there. It's too dark to even read the menu. It might be good for dating, but definitely not for hanging out with friends. As a restaurant with so many good dishes, it should use more lights to let customers take a good look at the great food.
Good food, good value. Cocktails were sub par, but I didn’t expect them to be good. Would go again.
Great service, delicious food, lots of options.
Great Gluten Free options! Food was excellent! Can't wait to return!
so was our first time having food here the experience was great plus I call it Our waitress was Teressa she was wonderful and kind would love to go back
Best chicken curry sauce we ever had... just like my grandmother's. The nasi goreng had a lot of good shrimp and was quite a large serving. Love this place! Definitely will go back.
I love this place, everything is great but definitely try the roti paratha, three pepper chicken and fish (amazing)
Amazing food!
The cross section of so many wonderful cultures and their cuisine is what Malaysian food is. It is the delicate blend of thai, indian, and east asian that creates magic. The roti is the best in Chicago.
I love this place.
Rito
Great service!
Great meal. Good drinks. Nice waitress. Pleasant date night
Delicious food and helpful staff! Highly recommend!
Amazing and flavorful food. Came out super fast. Service was slightly slow but will definitely return to try more options
My husband and I tried so I after watching a local food recommendation show. We were absolutely delighted with drinks and cuisine. Our waitress was very helpful in making recommendations as we had never tried Malaysian cuisine. All of her recommendations were excellent. The music was a little loud and intrusive, which annoyed us. We also didn’t enjoy drinking water from jars. We would absolutely recommend this restaurant and will be returning or ordering in.
Best Laksa since I left Singapore!
Fantastic service, food, and atmosphere.
Food and service were both great! We'll definitely be coming back.
Good food and friendly service. My first time trying Malaysian food. The flavors blew me away.
Such a neighborhood gem - I am sad we didn't find it sooner but better late than never :)
We came and the restaurant closed even when we have made the reservation.
Love the outdoor space
I love the patio! On a nice summer night it is very pleasant. My only regret is that they don't carry the prosecco any longer. The portions are large and the service is great.
The food was good but the atmosphere didn't sound like Malaysia. In the complex is fine. The kitchen close at 10 pm, so I suggest to go not later than 9.
I am glad I have found a good Southeast Asian restaurant in Chicago. Fried roti with chicken curry sauce was delicious. The Tofu stir fry was crisp on the outside, smooth and juicy inside. The wonton soup didn’t taste like the typical MSG broth I encounter elsewhere. I can’t wait to go back and try other items.
Malaysian cuisine is one of my favorites. Having visited Malaysia and Singapore several times, I must say the sambal and roti prata were excellent. The spice level could increase a bit for the rendang but the beef was very tender. The coconut pudding was phenomenal and just get right amount of sweetness. I would say the dessert was good for 3-4 people. Overall a great experience.
Menu seemed to have a lot of Americanized Asian dishes so I was skeptical but pleasantly surprised by the nasi lemak nyonya curry chicken. The sauce was delicious and pretty authentic. The side veggies and other accompaniments were just average but we were focused on the main course. It wasn't very busy but service was surprisingly fast for both food and drinks. Note: the lemongrass for the cocktails is a lemongrass syrup so if you don't like sweet drinks, don't get their martini.
Great Malaysia food in town
Fantastic food and service
Not noticeable by signage and a little confusing when you go in... not very warm seems a bit unfinished. Hot n sour soup was a large portion and the peanut noddle dish was good with veggies only, but I didn’t think it was as good as other reviewers.
Awesome food and the service was very warm and welcoming. Will dine here again.
Excellent food. Authentic
Food was wonderful; our server was attentive and friendly. Low key environment. Enjoyed the whole experience.
Serai was very good overall, the wonton soup my wife got was pretty bland but the Roti is fantastic. Service was great and the food came very fast.
