It's a unifying ingredient that connects all countries across the region, and adds that extra little kick to make a dish truly authentic. Also, it is the answer to your call for genuine South East Asian, Malaysian, cooking.
Currently being cultivated in Logan Square, the delightful restaurant aims to bring to you the best of traditional regional food, with a focus on Malaysian fare – specialities like Char Koay Teow, Curry Laksa and Hainanese Chicken – at the hands of a passionate chef who lives to enhance his craft.
Great meal. Good drinks. Nice waitress. Pleasant date night
Delicious food and helpful staff! Highly recommend!
Amazing and flavorful food. Came out super fast. Service was slightly slow but will definitely return to try more options
My husband and I tried so I after watching a local food recommendation show. We were absolutely delighted with drinks and cuisine. Our waitress was very helpful in making recommendations as we had never tried Malaysian cuisine. All of her recommendations were excellent. The music was a little loud and intrusive, which annoyed us. We also didn’t enjoy drinking water from jars. We would absolutely recommend this restaurant and will be returning or ordering in.
Best Laksa since I left Singapore!
Fantastic service, food, and atmosphere.
Food and service were both great! We'll definitely be coming back.
Good food and friendly service. My first time trying Malaysian food. The flavors blew me away.
Such a neighborhood gem - I am sad we didn't find it sooner but better late than never :)
We came and the restaurant closed even when we have made the reservation.
Love the outdoor space
I love the patio! On a nice summer night it is very pleasant. My only regret is that they don't carry the prosecco any longer. The portions are large and the service is great.
The food was good but the atmosphere didn't sound like Malaysia. In the complex is fine. The kitchen close at 10 pm, so I suggest to go not later than 9.
I am glad I have found a good Southeast Asian restaurant in Chicago. Fried roti with chicken curry sauce was delicious. The Tofu stir fry was crisp on the outside, smooth and juicy inside. The wonton soup didn’t taste like the typical MSG broth I encounter elsewhere. I can’t wait to go back and try other items.
Malaysian cuisine is one of my favorites. Having visited Malaysia and Singapore several times, I must say the sambal and roti prata were excellent. The spice level could increase a bit for the rendang but the beef was very tender. The coconut pudding was phenomenal and just get right amount of sweetness. I would say the dessert was good for 3-4 people. Overall a great experience.
Menu seemed to have a lot of Americanized Asian dishes so I was skeptical but pleasantly surprised by the nasi lemak nyonya curry chicken. The sauce was delicious and pretty authentic. The side veggies and other accompaniments were just average but we were focused on the main course. It wasn't very busy but service was surprisingly fast for both food and drinks. Note: the lemongrass for the cocktails is a lemongrass syrup so if you don't like sweet drinks, don't get their martini.
Great Malaysia food in town
Fantastic food and service
Not noticeable by signage and a little confusing when you go in... not very warm seems a bit unfinished. Hot n sour soup was a large portion and the peanut noddle dish was good with veggies only, but I didn’t think it was as good as other reviewers.
Awesome food and the service was very warm and welcoming. Will dine here again.
Excellent food. Authentic
Food was wonderful; our server was attentive and friendly. Low key environment. Enjoyed the whole experience.
Serai was very good overall, the wonton soup my wife got was pretty bland but the Roti is fantastic. Service was great and the food came very fast.
Nothing fancy but delicious food. Be sure to try one of the rendang dishes.
A most memorable experience in dining -- our expectation 'at best' was a pan-asian fare, but were pleasantly surprised -- we came to Serai to sample specifically Malaysian cuisine and that we did, thanks to our knowledgeable and exuberant server -- one in our party had an egg allergy and the chef was able to modify his dish without compromising on taste -- our food was beautifully presented, with just the right amount of heat and flavor - heavenly... we will surely be back for more...
Nice place to have a conversation. The food was good but not what we expected. Our waiter was nice and knowledgeable about the food
Friends visiting from Malaysia and craving comfort food. The Chinese style lemak was almost inedible . The decor badly need updating. The decor looked like an old bar dive converted to a restaurant. Head over to Bingo tea on Argyle street for much cheaper and better Malaysia food or drive way north to Penang fir real authentic Malaysian food. Very disappointed .
We ordered 5 plates and all large portions and delicious. Very tasty
Great food! If you call, you may be able to get a time not available on OpenTable.
Very good traditional food!
Highly recommed Hainanese Chicken and Roti Pratha!
Very slow service. Food is good, but portions are small.
Great food！I love the coconut pudding and that fried chicken leg with fried rice! The curry here was soooo great! Strongly recommended
We have been to Serai numerous times. The food is great and service is typically always great.
This time however we did not get good service. It was a Sunday afternoon, with the Restaurant half empty...not sure if they were understaffed, but it took forever for them to take our order and then food took a long time to come as well. They forgot to bring us some appetizers we ordered as well. I am not sure what went wrong that day!
But overall the food is great and we will keep going there no matter what.
My coworker and I were so excited to try fusion food. Enjoyed parata with chicken, nasi goreng, 3 chilli chicken and kankun. The food was delicious.
The only downside that spoilt our meal was the rude hostess. We were given a small table, so without thinking much of it, we joined the table next to us. She spoke to us in a loud condescending manner about asking permission before moving the table, and that the restaurant gets more customers on Friday; not to do this again. It was 5.30p and we left at 6.30 p.m. There were two other customers. We did not like her attitude and rude behavior.
Great place to experience another dining culture
We love Serai! A great neighborhood spot, excellent food & flavors!
Amazing!!! Great food! Authentic! Try the laksa soup!
I can’t give them a “Wow” rating because it wasn’t. Seemed like most of the dishes are like of other cuisines. Nothing really out of the ordinary but not bad.
