Food was awesome! Best soup I have EVER eaten. Wine pairing was perfect. A really wonderful meal! Thank you!!
We were there for New Years Eve and had a fantastic meal. The only downside was the host staff seemed very flustered and disjointed in trying to get everyone seated.
My husband and I had dinner at Sel on New Year's Eve. Overall, we were not terribly impressed. Scottsdale has so many fine dining options, and we were expecting something really special. Unfortunately, while nothing was awful, overall it didn't live up to my expectations. The biggest problem was the level of service. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table despite having a reservation, and then we sat for another five minutes or so with no one coming over to our table. No water was offered, etc. Our waitress was completely charming, when we saw her. However, it appeared she had too many tables at once, and there wasn't a backup server, so there were numerous times that we were waiting for service, and no one was there to help us. Water glasses were empty at times, etc. We requested bread for the table, which we received, but no small plates were given, and the bread was quite crumbly, so the table got quite messy before the first course was even served - and no one even attempted to tidy our table cloth. In general a chain restaurant like Ruth's Chris has far better table service. Also, the alcoholic beverages were disappointing. I had two cocktails (one of which I had to wait quite awhile for) and both were under poured (glass only a little over half full) and light on alcohol. The bubbly that came with our meals wasn't served until almost the last course - which I'm sure was intentional. The food was very good, but it didn't blow me away, especially for the price point. Also, when each course was brought to our table there was no real explanation or presentation of the dish. In sum, my husband and I had far nicer meals at other restaurants while we were in Scottsdale, so the fact that Sel was supposed to be our special holiday dinner was even more disappointing. Perhaps they were just overwhelmed on New years Eve, but we will not be returning to Sel.
My boyfriend and I went for NYE dinner.
Here’s our experience in a nutshell:
15 min for someone to approach our table and take our drink order. Another 10 min for someone to bring the water. Then, the real waiting started. It took them TWO HOURS to serve our main course. My boyfriend enjoyed the filet mignon, but the duck was loaded with salt. Three times during the four course meal, the next course arrived while there were dirty dishes on the table from the previous course. Empty cocktail glasses sat for an hour on our table. After almost three hours, we got to dessert, but only after the incorrect dessert was brought to the table two times.
This place is a farce, an overpriced restaurant in a lovely section of Scottsdale, masquerading as a fine dining establishment.
What a disappointing dining experience!!
Absolutely the worst service I have ever experienced in Scottsdale.
SEL should consider, increase the size of the portions or reduce the price of the tasting menu.
We were there on New Years Eve at which time they were serving a four course tasting menu. Our first three courses were actually pretty good. Our fourth course was a shortcake desert with a side of ice cream . The ice cream was melted by the time it was served to us and the cake part of the desert was stale.
In my past experiences when going to a restaurant such as SEL ( high end tasting menus ) each course is usually served to the table all at once and a description of the plate described. It was also apparent to me everybody from the server, hostess, busboys to the manager were serving the courses.
The entire staff was just running in every direction.
Our server when he did make it to our table literally dropped the plates and was gone.
The only time he said more than 2 words to us is when he was giving us the check. ( Tip time )
In Closing : There are much better restaurants in the Scottsdale area than SEL.
REGARDLESS OF THE FACT IT WAS NEW YEARS EVE.
Loved the price fixe menu and choices! The four courses were the exact right amount of food with a shared desert. The ambiance inside was perfect! Our only complaint was it seemed like they were understaffed and our waiter was a bit rushed.
Superb, extraordinary, sublime dining.
Great tasting menu & wine pairing - probably the best in Phoenix, AZ......value for money, meh!
Wonderful experience from start to finish. Lovely setting, great creative food and perfect service.
4 courses is the way to go.each one better than the other. We will return.
Wonderful restaurant, wonderful help, fantastic food! Definitely a must visit!!
Sel is one of the latest high cuisine restaurants in Scottsdale and the Phoenix metro area that prepares Napa Valley Michelin-level cuisine. The head chef and owner was previously executive chef at the acclaimed Cafe Monarch and that tradition is clearly felt but with a ultra modern decor that is reminiscent of restaurants in the chic LA scene. There is both indoor and outdoor patio seating available. I preferred indoor as the outside seating has not yet caught up to the level of the indoor ambiance. The club style music played on the overhead was a bit too loud initially and felt a bit out of place. That is something you wouldn't experience in Napa Valley or at top restaurants in France (and I would have preferred more elegant or euro-progressive instrumental music to go with the ambiance but each their own). The volume was immediately addressed and it did not detract from our dining experience overall.
With a four course menu that offers two choices per course (three smaller, one larger), there is accommodation for vegetarian and gluten-free diets. The menu is changed every 6 weeks leaving customers wanting to come back soon to see what else the chef has managed to create. Each course is presented with a lot of care and detail. The flavors can be both robust and delicate. The ingredients are market fresh. Wine selection was excellent. The very cold water was cucumber and mint infused. Delicious. Sel is not for those on a budget, those that want a deal, or those who want large American restaurant portions. Sel makes no apology for its high price tag. If you want a lot of food at corporate prices, Cheesecake Factory is five minutes away. If you want your palate to experience the highest quality culinary experience, Sel should be on your short list. Sel receives my highest recommendation.
Always a great dining experience, we will be back....
The service was great but the value of the food ($300+) was not up to par. Honestly we were very disappointed with the food. Service was great.
I took my friend to Sel for his birthday. We had the four course prix fixe dinner. All four courses were excellent! The quality of each was exceptional. This gives me confidence that future menu entrees (the menu changes a couple times per year) will be something to look forward to. I’ll be back!
We chose the 4 course meal with wine paring. The wines were of good quality and exceptionally paired. Our food however was not as exceptional. The foie gras was very good but every other course was served cold. We expected warm squid bisque, again cold, ravioli.. cold and not very memorable. With so many good restaurants in Old Town, we will frequent somewhere else.
We loved the patio. The flowers all around made it very private and romantic. The food was unique and delicious
The food is beyond amazing, the service was excellent and it is one of our favorites!1
Consistently a fantastic experience from start to finish!
Went for my Mother's 80th birthday. The food was amazing. The service was excellent. The waiter seemed to have great pride in the food. We ate inside and the dining was lovely and noise level allowed for easy conversation among a party of six. All in all, a terrific experience.
It was a very nice dining experience. If we had more of an appetite we might have tried the full tasting menu (around $80). We tried the cauliflower raviolis and duck. Both were amazing dishes but be prepared to spend some money!
Two of our three main courses were excellent, and the starters were very good. The duck was not spectacular. The inside of the restaurant is a bit tacky, but the terrace seating at night is wonderful. The servers lacked training and were a little sloppy. For sure an expensive restaurant, they need to tighten the operation a little bit.
Brandon is one of the top 5-6 chef's in Phoenix/Scottsdale. Food is always superb. Service excellent. Wine pairing are a nice touch. We highly recommend it.
Bachelorette party dinner
We had a wonderful dining experience! This is the second time we have been to Sel and it did not disappoint! The food and wine pairing was superb, as was the service! I would highly recommend this intimate, lovely restaurant!
If you are looking for a wonderful restaurant for a special occasion ... this is it! Yes it is a bit on the pricier side and it was well worth it!
Excellent experience, great ambiance, and very good food! Not a local to Scottsdale but will have to stop by Sel when I visit! (Especially since the menu changes every 6 weeks)
Food was fantastic. Service was perfect. A great experience.
Amazing meal and flavors. Never disappoints!
Exceptional culinary experience. Intense flaviours and a special occasion place. Spendy for sure but worth the visit if budget is no option.
This was our second meal at Sel and it was phenomenally. At this price point it's not somewhere I would eat every week, but well worth price. Also since the menu changes so frequently everyone on the menus was new to us. We had the 4 course prix fixe with the wine pairing. The wine paring was great - very good matches for our choices. The service was great and very attentive. One of the best restaurants in the valley.
Great food. What I would expect from a tasting menu. However for the price I anticipated a better service with descriptions of the food while it is presented. It shouldn’t be just dropped off at the table. Ambiance was great. Good wine pairing.
Outstanding service and food.
Highly recommend Sel! The first two courses tho evening were out of this world (Chilled cantaloupe soup & beef tenderloin). The other dishes were very good too. Waiter (Bradley) was great and table busser (missed his name) was highly attentive. Really top rate meal and service. Atmosphere very unpretentious given the superb food. Will definitely be back next time I am in Scottsdale.
Always a special experience!
They have an amazing menu. Amazed that they don’t have a Michelin star rating. Service is great. Staff was very knowledgeable. The food itself was so great from the cold soup to the lamb to truffles ravioli. Can’t say enough great things about this place.
Excellent restaurant. 4 course meal was absolutely delicious .
It was unique and wonderful. It was a birthday dinner. Wait staff attentive but not over bearing. Noise level low enough for us to talk. Food well done with lovely presentation. We’ve added to our list of favorites.
Superb prix fixe with imaginative but remarkable combinations. The space is not large so one or two noisy patrons at the bar is enough to make it pretty loud, but worth any noise level.
