At Sekisui Midtown, sushi chefs don't just push the envelope; they put the envelope through the paper shredder. Chefs are encouraged to show off their creativity and listen to customer’s ideas, creating sushi rolls that can’t be found anywhere else. Also, purists will be delighted with the exhaustive lineup of nigiri sushi - perfectly sliced fish atop a mound of rice seasoned with vinegar, sugar and a touch of sake. The restaurant’s fresh fish is flown in several times a week from locations such as Hawaii, Louisiana, and Los Angeles. There’s something to please everyone. The extensive menu covers lots of familiar Japanese cuisine territory with teriyaki, tempura and udon noodles. Lively and noisy might not be typical descriptions of most Japanese restaurants, but the words fit Sekisui Midtown. As it is always full of familiar faces, Sekisui is a popular neighborhood hang-out.

Sekisui Midtown Ratings and Reviews
Although normally we would order sushi, we went to Sekisui Midtown seeking tempura, because we had a favorite Japanese restaurant we loved in Antwerp, Belgium, that served the most marvelous shrimp-and-vegetable tempura we've ever had. You can order tempura, like sushi, by the piece (two pieces), and we ordered shrimp, calamari, and sweet potato. It was not the tempura of our dreams, although it was very good -- except for the calamari, which was calamari steak that kept slipping out of its crust. The cold sake was excellent (many good selections, although why you would want hot sake in Memphis in July escapes me): Sho Chiku Bai, a reliable sake made in Berkeley, CA. Our wait person was extremely efficient (she memorized our order!) and attentive without being intrusive. The small area we were seated in (left of the entrance) was snug, but if there are loud talkers, it becomes uncomfortable.
Ate here over the 4th of July weekend, my buddy was coming in later and I had time to kill. It was only me at my table, but it took the waitress over 20 minutes to get my food order. The restaurant was somewhat busy, but not to a point where one should wait that long.

We love this place! The Sushi can't be beat. They have the usual rolls one expects, plus lots of great specialty rolls. And, they're happy to customize anything one dreams up.
The service is top notch, we are treated like family. We couldn't ask for anything better.
My only major complaint was with the wait time. I've been here many times before and know that there is limited space, so I had made a reservation for 2 for 7:00 PM this time. We got there right on time, and they did not have a table ready for us. We ended up waiting about 10-15 minutes for a table. It may have just been an off night, and I would still go back, it was just a little disappointing.
Our food was not up to par of what it usually is. The vegetables for the salmon teriyaki were terrible. The salmon and rice were OK. The miso and clear soup are not as good as they used to be. The salad was good however. If we did not have a buy one, get one, I would have been very upset that we paid for a full meal. Very disappointing.

Lee and Saxon are great there!! We spent over 200 dollars on Sushi and Sake and they brought out complimentary dessert for our table. It was a really nice treat to a perfect dinner. The quality of fish used there is far better than many other places I have dined in and had sushi. I strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a nice small dining experience with a great attentive staff and reasonably priced rolls.
The hostess was friendly and efficient. The server was also friendly, but the service was super slow. The online menu indicates they serve fried rice but the don't. The food was good, but we didn't care for the steamed veggies. The atmosphere was pleasant and it was great for visiting, but don't be in a hurry when dining.
The food was great, as always. However, the service was SLOW. I don't konw if the kitchen was understaffed or if there was a miscommunication with our order, but it took over 45 minutes from the time we ordered until we received our food. All we ordered was sushi, there is no possible way it could have taken that long.
I'll be going to other Sekisui locations from now on, the food is just as good and I can get my food in 15 minutes (like every other sushi place I've ever been).
We've enjoyed all the Sekisui restaurants in Memphis for many years. Midtown has been a disappointment over the last 6 months. The quality of food is not what it used to be and sushi costs are rising while the amount of sushi per order is less. This last visit was exceptionally poor and many patrons dining around us were visibly as unhappy as we were. It was obvious the restaurant was understaffed and had someone in the kitchen cooking that had little experience. Our bill was almost $200 and we walked away feeling it was a total waste of hard earned money.
I made a dinner reservation that day for 6:30. My party walked in at 6:01 and was told that it would be a 30 to 45 minute wait. Unfortunately we did not have the time to wait to be seated so we had to leave. Very disappointed about making a reservation and then being told we would have to wait behind other parties.
