SEI restaurant & lounge Ratings and Reviews
First, the positive: good drinks, broad selection on the menu, and nice decoration/look of the restaurant. Negatives, very, very loud, few servers, so they're always in a hurry and the sense you get is that you're almost in a train station where everybody is running around you. Also, that makes it difficult for them to be pleasant. Combinations might be too exotic; example, a california sushi roll with curry spices mixed on the crab meat. Overall, it was ok for us.
I loved SEI. The waiter recommended a very reasonable and plentiful appetizer of raw tuna that the customer puts on seaweed with guacamole and eats as a role. It was fantastic.
The only negative thing I would say is that the restaurant is noisy--not more than the average noisy restaurant, but I like quieter restaurants better than noisy ones to enhance conversation.
2nd time dining here. Brought friends who have pretty sophisticated palates and they were delighted. Portions are small- hard to share for more than 2. With 4 each of us got a bite. But service was good and food inventive. Highly recommend. However, the address in Open Table does not match where the restaurant is...not sure why.
My wife and I came for our anniversary dinner last night. We were seated right away. The wait staff was excellent and very attentive. They came over to get anything we needed and we're good about bringing out dishes as we ordered and expected them, not all at once. The cocktails, especially the Liquid Wasabi, were excellent. I highly recommend the foie gras sashimi, the zuke nigiri, and their flagship roll, the fish and chips roll. We also really enjoyed the toro sashimi and the salmon and cilantro roll.
After dinner, the waiter brought over a dessert for us and two glasses of champagne, on them. That was a nice end to a great date night.
Happy Hour Review;
Sushi before the Wizards Game & followed the reviews here.
Walked in & received welcoming salutations, a positive way to start off.
Happy Hour was still active so we sat at the Bar as our Server took care of with amazing accommodation & service throughout our visit. The Citrus Salmon Sashimi was delicious.
Interior design is top grade with the contemporary mostly white furniture, unique lighting fixtures/chandeliers & distinctive artwork through different sections of the restaurant. Restrooms offers a dedicated Women stall & a Unisex stall.
The price point balances perfectly even with the Happy Hour portions.
Will absolutely return.
I am not a regular of SEI, but each time I go I have a great meal with great service. I usually mix up the menu, trying different selections between lunch and dinner. Tried one of the bento boxes, again great! Their short ribs are tender and melt in your mouth. The staff are very attentive, they also have good drinks!
Food was "meh" at best. Rice was dry and hard on the sushi rolls. Sushi lacked flavor. Sides were nothing we couldn't make at home, but tasted good (asparagus and brussel sprouts). The most tasty item was the octopus which is why we rated as well as we did.
Honestly one of the best dining experiences I've ever had ! The shiso mojito was INCREDIBLE and if you dont order the charred octopus , you have missed out (Actually the resembles the taste and texture of lobster , not your typically chewy tasteless rings of calamari) Also the SOS Roll and the salmon were out of this world . Do not get me wrong , it isn't cheap (if you get cocktails too) but it was definitely worth it for a special occasion or nice date night !
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Sei. Although it was restaurant, not everyone in our party opted for that menu, but we all felt we had great options regardless. Additionally, one member of our party is gluten free, and another has an allergy and both were accommodated very well.
I went on DC restaurant week and had the 3 course meal. For starter I got crab catch roll and My friend and me did not like it. I think the roll is too dry overall and she thinks that cilantro in the roll is too much and it covers the other flavor. For my main course I had the don. That was not so bad and the portion is quite large. For dessert, I had the mochi ice cream. I will say that it is the best of the three course. Sticky rice dumpling with coffee, mochi and vanilla. However, this is kinda sad since I rated their dessert as the best of the three courses. Since there were quite a lot customers that day, the service seemed to be off. I had to looked for waiter for 3 minutes before I got my chance to ask for the check. It was really noisy that sometimes I could not hear what my friend was saying. Maybe on a not so busy day, I will go another time, but not worthwhile for a trip. BTW, their soy sauce is actually better than average sushi restaurant.
Really enjoyed the sushi here, including some fun options like "fish & chips." Also tasty is the liquid wasabi cocktail. Some of the shareable plates were a bit steep for the amount of protein offered, and $8 beer night is a thing.
Service was friendly and attentive at the admittedly-early time we visited.
I like this place and hope to be back.
I always love going to SEI for the sushi! They have a variety of dishes for non-sushi eaters, and it's so good! I've been going there for the past six years. Great place for dinner with friends or business. Prices are reasonable, service is great, and food is amazing!!
I waited 30 minutes after being seated to even get water. Waiter took our drink order, and we waited 10 minutes. We watched him talking to other waitstaff most of the time. We tried to get his attention and he didn't care, so we left.
I chose this restaurant for its online menu and availability for reservations. I visited with my 2 teenage sons and we expanded our horizons when ordering. The sushi was amazing. I miss eating there! One of the best meals per my sons. I would highly recommend this restaurant for its amazing atmosphere, quality of food, and service!
I come here several times a year, at least. It had a been a little while since my last visit, and I was surprised at the new menu. It seemed to have fewer rolls and sushi/sashimi options, and didn't seem to have the 'sake flight' that I'd enjoyed in the past. Instead the emphasis seems to have shifted somewhat to small plates. Some of them were very nice. The pork belly buns were good, as were the brussel sprouts. I found the sea bass a bit overcooked and salty, but still edible. The fish&chips roll is still good but seemed to have more goop on it than I remembered. Our reservation was for 8 pm, and I had hoped the noise level would be lower because the nearby shows had started and people would have left, but in fact I now know it is pretty deafening at 8 pm. By 9 it had emptied out a bit and the noise was getting a tad less overwhelming. I will continue to go, but may begin looking for very early dinners in order to get past the noise.
As a chef, or course I was looking for something sort of above and beyond and sei most certainly delivered. The sushi and fish were high quality and fresh, the flavor profiles were delicious and the service was outstanding. Only thing I could offer is to cook the bok choy less, now if was supposed to be raised then it was perfect, but the menu just said bok choy so I was expecting vibrant green choy with texture, but it was still delicious either way. I was thoroughly impressed with sei and will return in the future for sure.
