Just great food, great menu, and great service. One of our favorites. A hidden gem downtown.

Food and service at this modern Asian restaurant are great. Love the wasabi guacamole appetizer and the caramelized sea bass. Good selection of sushi and sashimi. Ask to sit at one of Alexi’s tables. He is an excellent server, friendly, knowledgeable, attentive and helpful without being intrusive. Very convenient to Shakespeare and Wooly Mamoth theaters.

SEI bills itself as Asian fusion cuisine. It is primarily a Japanese style restaurant with an bit of a twist on most dishes. The spicy salmon roll for example includes cilantro as well as traditional wasabi and cucumber. The spicy snapper included a bit of sweetness from honey. SEI has two kitchens, one for sushi and a second for other dishes. Most dishes are small, more like an appetizer than a meal. Our server recommended two per person which seemed about right. Think something like Japanese Tapas. The fish was all very fresh and delicious. An order of traditional uni nigiri was particularly fresh and flavorful. The cooked dishes were equally good. We ordered a crispy duck leg with fried kale and a Chilean sea bass with bok choy and fish sauce. Both were very good. The atmosphere is modern but very comfortable and quieter than most restaurants in this part of DC.

I love this restaurant! The food is delicious and there is so much to choose from. The ambiance is very soothing and the service impeccable. Unfortunately we always seem to go before a play at the Shakespeare Theatre and don't have as much time as I'd like to explore the menu and have dessert.

What an outstanding evening. The entire staff was attentive, friendly and welcomed our party like family. The food kept coming - fast, hot and furiously. Did I mention it was inventive and delicious. Each morsel was gobbled up. This was the perfect place to celebrate my daughter’s 21st. She and her hip friends where in their element while my wife and I felt right at home in this chic, upscale restaurant. I highly recommend it.

Great food in shareable plates, especially crispy brussel sprouts, charred octopus, edamame, but very noisy if the restaurant is full.

I went with a friend for Restaurant Week, and we ordered from the brunch menu. It was $22 for the food and an additional $10 for bottomless mimosas (plus taxes & tip), which was a fantastic deal! We got there at 2:30, and even though brunch ended at 3:00, they continued to fill our mimosas until we left. Our favorite dishes were the crispy brussel sprouts, the bibimbap bowl, and the mochi ice cream. We weren't blown away by every single dish, but it was all VERY good, and the service was FANTASTIC. Our waitress was incredibly attentive and friendly. Overall, we had a wonderful time, and we plan to go back for happy hour!

Good Restaurant Week experience. Delicious cocktail and food. Ambience was quiet at first because we were there early, then picked up as we were wrapping up. Will definitely go back to try other menu options especially sushi. Very convenient to Capital One Arena.

New found jewel in Penn Quarter. Dined here twice and carried out once. Great experience each time. Food is fresh and innovative. Sushi is the bomb! Spicy tuna roll and salmon roll are deeeelicious! Great twist on guacamole and chips. They kick it up a notch with wasabi. We've also had scallops on a bed of kale with bacon, lamb chops, fried rice with shrimp. And there are so many more dishes we can't wait to try. Signature cocktails are really good; mixologists on steroids. And the service has not disappointed at all. Professionally trained and extremely courteous. Beautiful dining room with nice accents. They call it "Asian fusion" but we call it "superb"!

Unexpectedly very enjoyable... the pleasant greeting upon our arrival, the ambiance, the knowledgeable and personable server, the timing of food items arrived big at our table and most of all the delicious food all contributed to our first SEI experience- we very very pleased and we’ll be back! The SOS Sushi Roll and the fish tacos were exceptional!

This was my second time at SEI and the verdict was still the same- it's fine. The food is fine and the sushi is not bad. The decor is trendy but the restaurant is always eerily empty. We will probably be back but I'm not super excited about it

We went to SEI for dinner on New Years eve. Great ambience and very attentive service! The reason I rated slightly lower on food was because although the rolls were innovative and delicious, the other items were only OK and some dishes lacked flavor. Also disappointed that they shut down the restaurant by 11.30 on new years eve with the last order at 11 - which we were not prepared for. The staff made up for it by serving us an additional dessert on the house.

I have dined at SEI on many occasions over the past few years, and this is, honestly the first bad experience I’ve had there.

We had a reservation for 7:30 pm, which the restaurant had confirmed by phone that day. At no time were we warned that they were closing at 8pm. Had we known our meal would be rushed by the server, we would have chosen to dine elsewhere.

Literally, 10 minutes after being seated we were told by the waitress that it was “last call” for food, and we needed to place outmr entire order right away. I just don’t This SEI should accept reservations for a time that is within 30 minutes of closing, as the diners are rushed, and the entire staff makes it clear that they just want to go home. That said, the food is always excellent here, although the drinks are extraordinarily weak - order wine or a beer instead as in even a basic mixed drink, this restaurant tends to skimp on the alcohol.

The sushi is exceptional as our the fresh, innovative small plates. Kudos to the chef. Desert was not an option for us, as the kitchen had closed by the time our entrees arrived. Such a shame for a restaurant of this caliber.

SEI serves Asian dishes with an emphasis on sushi. Mostly small sharable plates. The poke (raw marinated tuna) and bibimap were particularly good. Portions were generous given the price and location.

Went to SEI with my wife on Saturday night (12/16/2017) for a date night, and was absolutely blown away. We ordered nothing but sushi and drinks, so I can't speak to the rest of the menu, but everything we ordered was exceptional.
When we go out to eat, it's sushi. Practically every time. Do believe me when I say that SEI was one of the best sushi dinners either of us have ever had.
The cocktails were well executed and unexpected. The "Cambodian Mule" was, by far, my favorite. It was a Southeast Asian twist on a Moscow mule, cleverly utilizing kaffir lime-infused vodka, coconut milk, and ginger beer which, to me, was quite reminiscent of a Thai Tom kha soup, but with booze making a welcome appearance.
The sushi rolls and sashimi were 100% on point, with obvious care and hearty put into both presentation and flavor. The SOS roll smartly used not-quite-ripe strawberries to add some zing and depth to the flavor. The spicy tuna tataki maki roll was an umami bomb docked in a Black sesame sauce which immediately had me thinking of a rich, dark mole, but much, much more delightful.
The fatty tuna sashimi was the most unexpected green off them all, though. I ordered it raw, and it showed up seared. Thank God for that... The slight char in this, criss-cross lines on the surface brought the flavor to life, and I can absolutely say, without hesitation, that it was one of the best bites of tuna - no, of any food - I've ever had the pleasure to chew and, eventually, reluctantly, swallow.
SEI isn't cheap, nor should it be. This food is deserving of a connoisseur, and the care and skill taken to prepare every dish was obvious.

This place is a hidden gem for bottomless brunch! For $10, you get 2 hours of bottomless mimosas and their house take on a bloody mary. The food is delicious and also very reasonably priced. They had many specialty rolls which were great - we had the spicy salmon cilantro, spicy tuna tataki maki, and spicy snapper. We also ordered the wasabi guacamole which is a must, and the korean kalbe tacos. Definitely planning on returning to try more of the menu. Service was also great - one member of our party came very late, but our waiter was very patient and understanding and our drinks were never empty for long.
