Amazing experience!!!!
It was everything all the reviews said it would be.
We started downstairs and the bar tender made wonder wine recommendations.
We then were seated upstairs where we tried the cheese plate, shrimp and soup before dinner. It was all so good.
Our entrees from the shrimp, veal and lamb couldn’t of been better.
The wine selection was tops.

I prefer eating in the tavern downstairs. It’s definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Raleigh. Not too pricey but definitely worth it for the food, atmosphere, and service. If you haven’t been, you should go once.

Holy Lord. One of the best classic fine dining experiences I've had in North Carolina. An amazing duck breast, an amazing gravlax tostada and a very classy atmosphere added up to a great evening. Service was a little formal and stuffy, a bit of a throwback to an earlier day but the house and overall surroundings are beautiful and The Tavern is super cute downstairs.

This is our 4th or 5th dinner at Second Empire. We drive up to Raleigh from Wilmington, NC t get access to Southwest Airlines and we stay overnight in downtown to be able to include this wonderful restaurant as part of our trip.

My N.Y. Strip steak was delicious and properly cooked (sauce was excellent, it's one of their strengths). My wife had the duck and I tried a bite; this beef lover is going to have that next time. Wonderful.

Looking forward to returning on our next trip to Raleigh.

My Fiancé and I visited Second Empire to celebrate the Christmas season. The restaurant was decorated beautifully with wreaths in every corner of every room and poinsettias on every table. The waiter was attentive and extremely knowledgable about the menu. He did a great job describing each late down to the smallest detail. The food was outstanding. We started with the Salmon Tostada and for the entree I got the NY Strip and my Fiancé got the Scallops. The plating was beautiful and the flavor was delicious. Tiramisu and coffee for desert was wonderful. They use Larry's Beans for coffee - Larry is a local Raleigh guy and a regular at Second Empire.

10/10 would recommend to a friend!

Gravlax the best we have ever had anywhere. Food exceptional, service a little lacking- that is always the case though. Seems like the restaurant hires plenty of staff but only some do the work.

We've been going here a few times a year for the past 4 years. Just love this place. Great food, drinks and superior service from the staff. It is a very relaxed, yet classy atmosphere. The prices are reasonable for everything you get. We love how the architecture of this old building was restored to it's original grandeur. Can not recommend this place enough. A definite "go to" place for special occasions.

Second Empire is a World Class restaurant... serving fine cuisine in a beautiful, historic mansion restored to perfection, with superb service for 20 years now in the ever evolving downtown Raleigh, NC. We were a party of four celebrating a birthday and could not have been more pleased with the food, drinks and attentive service. A real gem! Raleigh is very lucky to have Second Empire!!! The autographed menu and note from Chef Schurr and complimentary special dessert for the birthday girl was a very nice touch! Highly recommend the Duck!!!

Having frequented Second Empire for 15 years with rave reviews, this meal and service was a total disappointment. 30 minutes after seating to get a drink order and 45 minutes before first drinks arrive. Horrific however if that was the only issue I wouldn’t be writing this. Appetizers and food were sub par and not worthy of the $700 bill, usually it is.

The topper is the Manager calls and leaves me a message after my Yelp review, I call back shortly thereafter and am told she’s in but unavailable. Never calls back.

Go to Herons and be wowed!

Birthday dinner ...
The quality of the meals including presentation , selection of wines , and service were outstanding. I would highly recommend the rack of lamb which was exceptional.
I also like the fact that the tavern and restaurant menus have been consolidated. One area of improvement... bread ... which is mediocre at best.
We love the mansion settng overall ... but prefer dining in the atrium which , although somewhat noisy , provides a more relaxed dining experience.
Second Empire will remain one of our go to destinations for fine dining in the Triangle.

As a Raleigh native, Second Empire is consistently one of the best restaurants in the area. The food is always delicious and service is impeccable. We have been dining here for years and it makes a great place to celebrate special occasions. We even had our wedding ceremony and reception here and it was such a beautiful event.

I made a reservation for our wedding anniversary, and when we showed up at the restaurant, they had a copy of the menu, with Happy Anniversary, our names, and the date printed, signed by the chef. Just the start of a wonderful evening. The service was outstanding - not hovering, but attentive. The food was spectacular, for both the eyes and the taste buds. A very special night made better by the great staff and kitchen at Second Empire. Highly recommended for a special occasion.
