About Searsucker Downtown San Diego

Searsucker embodies the social dining experience by encouraging guests to come early and stay late.

The airy design features an open kitchen, a lounge space with comfortable seating and a lively bar area. Chef Brian Malarkey’s menus are both serious and fun, with creative twists on New American Classics. Dishes range from shared plates and small bites ideal for the whole table, to farm and ocean dishes that you’ll want to keep all to yourself. In San Diego for a conference and enjoyed a delicious meal at Searsucker. There were several large groups and the place was hoppin'. Our table was ready, service was prompt and the food delicious. The house red wine was recommended, however, we felt it was more a table wine after ordering a bottle - suggest reviewing the ample list for a better selection. Serving staff was happy and helpful and worked in teams. The decor is very nice, hip and all hard surfaces - noisy but not overwhelming (not a good choice if looking for quiet or romance). Great location in the Gaslight Quarter.

Extremely disappointing. They say they want you to come there and chill. NOPE. We were rushed for our order. 2 drinks had to be sent back. One had tonic when we requested soda the other had a substitute vodka (which the bartender took the liberty to change without asking). One meal the blue cheese fish was not edible. They did take the above off the bill but too late in my opinion. No apology nothing. Would absolutely not recommend nor go back

This place has great ambiance and great music. The food is always pretty good. The steaks could lose some of the fat on them. Short ribs are super tasty. Definitely worth a trip.

Ambience and cocktails were great. However, service and food were mediocre at best. Would not recommend the black cod or the scallops, very bland.

The food was very mediocre. The server recommended the octopus which was burnt so was the toasted cheese. The shrimps in shrimp and grits tasted cheap. The chairs are uncomfortable and the decor seems cheaply done.

I reserved a table for my seven colleagues, and we had an awesome team dinner! Everybody raved about the food, and we were able to share appetizers and have a really meaningful meal experience together. The menu, from drinks to food, is top notch, and the service is stellar. The ambiance feels very cool and casual, yet also elevated enough for special occasions and memorable experiences. The deep tables and seats are extremely comfortable, but the noisy acoustic space did make it difficult for intimate conversation.

Spacious restaurant - hip and modern vibe. Food was very good - small plates are ample portions. Server was a little bit annoying as he came back to our table to take our order far too frequently (every few minutes( even though we told him we hadn't even looked @ the menu. Didn't detract from the experience though - we'd definitely return. Oh! Dessert -some sort of butter or apple pound cake with ice cream. OMG

After we were seated, it took 20 minutes to get our Drink order and another 25 minutes to get our drinks. We hadn’t even ordered our food at this point. Then the waiter forgot several things we ordered. Great food, but really BAD service.

Visited San Diego for the weekend. Got a recommendation from a friend. This experience blow me away. The food was to die for. The Chef and Owner KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THERE DOING. Also, our server (Terry) was fabulous. Great energy and very knowledgeable, a true Rock Star! We watched him perfectly manage his entire section like a Boss. He had a group of 8, 2 tops, 4 tops and handled it with pure grace and style. I am definitely going to visit next time I’m in town.

Thanks!

I was there to celebrate my birthday with friends and made sure to write that down on my reservation. It was sad they didn’t even bother to read it and nobody mentioned or wished me happy birthday. I thought a restaurant of that level would pay attention to these details. I didn’t feel welcome and didn’t feel special.

This place is def. over hyped. The waitress we had really sucked. She barely checked on us and when she finally did come instead of delivering our drinks she went and talked to her co-worker first. The bus boy was way more efficient then her. Biscuits were very dry. I was very disappointed with the Duck Pot Pie which I was looking forward too because it was very soupy and had no flavor.

Overall, I can’t wait to go back!

Unfortunately we got a server who was not the friendliest. She was very dull. She greeted us asked us what we wanted to drink and was off, came back with drinks ask for our food orders, there was no small talk. She did not try to interact or connect with us in any way. She came to us simply to take drink and food orders. We asked for a new server who was amazing! Friendly, outgoing, and bubbly! The manager also went above and beyond to make sure we were satisfied after finding out we were not fond of our server. Food was amazing, atmosphere is upbeat, and location is perfect!

We had a party of 11 for my "last day" lunch. Our server, Robert, was one of the most helpful servers I've encountered. He was well educated on the menu and happy to give us any info we needed! The food was superb (try the Brussels sprouts...), cocktails were tasty (Jalaberry Strawpeno is on point) and we had awesome service! It was perfect.

Went w/two friends. 7:30pm. Ordered biscuits to share. 10' later: "we're out of biscuits". (How long does it take to make biscuits?). Two fish choices: "Black and blue" and catch of the day. My friend orders B&B, I order the Catch of the day. We get the same entrees brought to our table. Server then tries to tell me the B&B IS the catch of the day. Desserts were good. Selection of beers good. But when charged a pretty penny, I expect better service.

The noise level is ridiculous. We all left with scratchy throats from yelling so much. Food was mediocre. I had the duck pony pie. The amount of duck was miniscule and the gravy totally eradicated any duck flavor. No reason I can recommend this place to anybody.

Everything we ordered was delicious. We went with the waiter's recommendations for two small plates and each got an entree also. It was more than enough food for two people and we did end up taking some home. We are definitely game to go back the next time we are in the area. Loved the kitschy decor as well.

Overall it was a GREAT time! I was celebrating a birthday with good friends and this is a great spot to do that. Service was good without being too intrusive and the server's menu knowledge was on point and I wound up taking all his recommendations. The only thing that was a miss was the sides came out luke warm at best, even after they came back after being sent back. I sent them back again and asked that they get heated in a pan which they did and they were fine after that.

The octopus was tasty. The outside dining area was great for people watching in the gas lamp. However, our waitress was not very attentive. Our food was delivered by the busses and we were almost done with our meal and she finally came back. She asked my boyfriend how was the scallops and we already done. Not impressed with the food and value. Had the ny steak which was cooked medium and I requested medium rare. One potato? We spent $135 before tip and felt a little ripped off.

Overall disappointing. Flavors were definitely off- bass tasted like smelly vinegar, fried chicken breading had no flavor, steak was tough. The waiter was very busy but he tried, so the service was better than the food. Took a long time to be seated even with reservations. Not a place to go to if you want really great food/flavors.
