Quite expensive. Good, but obscure selections and high prices
There seemed to be no AC at the restaurant, so it was very hot.
I made a reservation for my birthday to come to this hip restaurant that came highly recommended by several friends. When we arrived at the time of the reservation, the restaurant was quiet and we saw the hostess iPad by the front door. While there was no hostess or sign stating that we should wait to be seated, but the existence of the iPad + reservation system indicated to us that we should wait. We waited, quite obviously I should add - both my partner and I are over 6 feet tall, while 4 different members of the staff looked at us and continued to ignore us. After 5 minutes of waiting, we actively asked the bartender if we were supposed to seat ourselves and she aggressively asked if we had a reservation. When we confirmed that we did, she sat us in what was the darkest corner of the restaurant. We saw this same awkward interaction occur with another couple after we had been seated, so the occurrence was not a fluke that just happened to us. As it was my birthday, I was hoping that this strange start to the meal would not be indicative of the rest of the experience, but unfortunately, it didn't get better. We ordered 5 dishes - 2 small plates, 1 soup, 1 large plate, and 1 from the snacks option. The snack dish - the marinated mushrooms - was the best thing we order and was truly delicious. The large plate, the Lamb Ragu, and the soup, the Gazpacho, were so salty that it was distracting and the Gazpacho was inedible. The remaining 2 small plates, Ful Medames + Moussaka, were palatable but did not provide us with anything to write home about. The service of the 3 of the staff members that we interacted with once seated was highly underwhelming for a restaurant that touts themselves as "service oriented", missing basic table service items such as neglecting to fill our empty water cups. Finally, not that I expect a banner or free dessert when visiting a restaurant for a birthday, it would have been nice for them to mention it when it is listed in the reservation.
We had a fantastic time at Scratch. Great food and very friendly staff.
killer green tomato gazpacho, and the halibut was cooked to perfection and well paired with the ratatouille!
Once again the food was SPECTACULAR! Four of us had different entrees and each of us were so delighted. The green tomato gazpacho is not to be missed.
I had been wanting to try Scratch for quite some time and I wish I had gone sooner. The food was absolutely outstanding and the service was fantastic. We got lucky and actually had one of the owners, Don, as our waiter. He was fabulous and made our experience even better. Scratch had a prixe fixe menu that was outstanding and a real bargain at $35 for five courses. Each course was better than the next. The portions were the right size and I didn’t leave feeling overly full. The plating and presentation of each course was beautiful. The cocktails were also delicious and made from scratch. Scratch has a great beer and wine list as well. At Don’s suggestion we tried amaro after dinner - it was the perfect digestif to end a perfect and really fun meal. We will definitely be returning.
We have really loved scratch and have referred many friends. The last visit wasn’t up to par. Service was good, but the food was not as good as it has been in the past... not bad, but not knock out. We were a little disappointed because we love this place and I am not inclined to go back anytime soon. So Sorry!
Food was absolutely delicious and the prices were fair for the menu. The owner and wait staff were extremely friendly and helpful with explaining the food and drink menu. The ambience was kind of a hipster feel and was very unique and was definitely our kind of place that my husband and I enjoy going to.
Both the manager/owner and wait staff were very attentive and helpful with recommendations. The food was delicious along with the pairing (flight) of specialty drinks. The flavors were unique without being overbearing so that the last bite was as good as the first.
What a fantastic variety of flavors here! Friends and I went to share and enjoyed everything. We started with the marinated mushrooms, pickles, and toast with lardo and honey butter. So delicious, especially that toast, which I am still thinking about 2 days later. Then we shared the gnudi (a cheesy doughy pasta) and the mushroom entree. We finished our meal with the chocolate cake—don’t pass that up ... we almost did and I don’t regret one bite. Loved it and can’t wait to go back!
While this restaurant has been around awhile, this is the first time I ventured up Troy Hill to visit it.
Th location is actually pretty convenient with quick access to downtown and 28.
Menu is creative and locally sourced. Service very attentive and personal. Noise level is low so you can easily talk with your dinner mates.
Don and his team did an outstanding job !!
This was our first time at Scratch and we loved it. We had heard good things about the restaurant, which is why we went out of our "way" to go there. The place exceeded our expectations in every way. The food was remarkable in the quality and flavors. The four of us had different entrees and appetizers. Everyone was impressed.
We fell in love with the food at scratch when we tasted their food at the very first Western PA Lamb fest.
Scratch was a very last minute decision and a very pleasant surprise.
Daniel was delightful as well as the server. The drinks were creative and has some great beer.
The food was fit for foodies. Serving sizes appropriate. It was a great dining experience.
Well worth the trip to try it.
Would definitely go back.
I was impressed with the friendliness of not only Don the owner but of all his marvelous staff. The service was efficient but I never felt pressured. Excellent eats. We had the Gravlax, chicken liver pate, asparagus, the duck confit & the lamb raging & the pannacotta desert. Everything was delicious & we both thoroughly enjoyed the food and the evening in general. Thank you. I’ll be back but I am not sure I’ll brave Rialto street again.
Everything was amazing! From the live Jazz band to the amazing staff, my boyfriend and I really enjoyed his birthday brunch. The food was delicious and so were the drinks. This was our second visit and surely won’t be the last!!
First, the owner personally greeted us and thanked us for spending our Sunday at their restaurant. Class.
Second , the waiter Kyle was so friendly and easy going and very patient with our questions about the various dishes.
Third the food was fantastic! flavorful, healthy and lots of vegan and vegetarian options as well as plenty of indulge items if you are in the mood to do so.
Scratch is great for dinner and brunch. I took my dad to Scratch this Father’s Day. It was my third time at Scratch, but first time for brunch. Wait staff and servers are very friendly and knowledgeable. The food was really terrific and nicely different from normal brunch fare but not too weird. Great choices and really delicious. I will definitely recommend to others.
Everything was so wonderful! Starting with being greeted at the door, to the drinks at the bar, to the amazingly delicious and complex flavors within our meal, to the outstanding service we recieved! We can’t wait to come back again!
Our dinner was excellent. Service started a little slow but turned out fine. The menu and wine list are limited but interesting and adequate. We will definitely return.
Terrific food and service. Creative food pairings and fresh ingredients. Can’t wait to return!
Scratch always has a unique menu with many great choices. This was our first brunch at Scratch and it was as delicious as any other meal. The ambiance is always pleasing and the service is fantastic! Can't wait to come back again!
Friendly owner greeted us and bought us a drink to celebrate our anniversary. Menu is rather short but varied. I'm vegan and they have a few options. Very long wines and liquors list. Food was delicious but not hot enough when it needed to be. At least one dish was mislabeled: ful mudamas is a navy bean dish in a tomato sauce, and instead I got hummus. The server appeared chaotic. Took a bit to get to our table when we wanted more bread. Seats are very uncomfortable, very hard. Eat fast and go. I enjoyed the experience but would not return.
Fabuyfood and atmosphere our new favyplace to dine
This our first visit to Scratch and we took another couple to enjoy it with us. I was somewhat disappointed in the food. The appetizers were good, but the portions of the mains were more like weight watcher portion. don't get me wrong, my lamb ragu was delicious. The salad my wife and I shared was like a side salad.
We will go again and give it another chance.
Great experience from drinks and starters through our entree and dessert. Owner Don and server Dorothy were superb and friendly. Chef and sous chef were also very friendly and came out to say hello.
Always sublime...from start to finish. By far, or favorite place in the city. Thank you
Scratch feels like a little, neighborhood hideaway -- except the food is anything but typical. Creative preparation. Unusual but tasty ingredients put together in an imaginative way. And truly accommodating service. We couldn't have been more pleased with the food, the service and the atmosphere.
Scratch never disappoints! The menu is interesting and presents a variety of delicious options. I have grown used to restaurant pacing making it feel as if they are rushing us out. I feel like I am in someone’s home and that the table is ours as long as we want it, The owner Don is always there and is warm and welcoming. He is a throwback to restauranteurs who once cared about guests, service and food as opposed to profit. Definitely on the top of our list in the Burgh.
The lamb dish was excellent but the pasta dish was not good. We weren’t offered bread so we asked and got burnt garlic bread at the end of the meal. I asked for a spoon and never got it. It took 10-15 min to get our drinks. The staff was nice but the service was not great.
We will be back! The four of us, hubby celebrating his birthday, daughter and future daughter-in-law, and I had a wonderful Friday evening 7 pm dinner at Scratch. We loved the ambiance that included a very personal attentive owner Don circulating about the dining room paying attention to his guests. All of us had great meals—duck, beef bourguignon, tagliatelle pasta, and lamb ragu—preceded by wonderful asparagus and tomato salads and delicious marinated olives and lardo toast (a bit rich for me but others liked it). My husband’s beef was tender and flavorful. My pasta was creative and tasty with nuts, cheese and egg. Portions were just right. The drink offerings were very nice with cocktails and also a careful introduction to a selection of vermouths and Negronis. My husband had a wonderful White Negroni that was like a light limoncello. We had the chocolate cake—two pieces shared amongst the four of us quite nicely given the richness of the dessert. It paired great with coffee after dinner. Parking was easy and the ambiance was relaxing and comfortable. The people working there were knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly which made for an overall very nice experience.
Great Dining experience. Owner is hands-on, wait staff was knowledgeable and the food was excellent. Will definitely go again!
The whole Scratch experience was fantastic! They won us over as new patrons.
My boyfriend and I went with another couple. We enjoyed excellent food and cocktails. They also had an amazing Jazz band in the bar area!
this was our second visit to scratch. it’s incredible food & service will keep us coming back!
Service was spectacular! This place is amazing. Food is to die for. Honestly you need to come and experience this dining ASAP
Amazing service, relaxed ambiance and great food. The overall experience exceeded my expectations. Servers were super attentive, met my dietary restriction, and everything was delicious. Great value, will return!
