Science Hill Inn
Sorry to say my experience was terrible. My party arrived on time, only to find that there was only one server working the entire dining room. She would not even seat us, although there were several open tables. She seemed surprised to even hear we had reservations! We could not get waited on, waiting patiently for 30 minutes. We also were not made aware of a buffet, not being able to order from the menu. We left hungry and very unhappy.
We took our two teen age grandchildren to a Sunday brunch. One eats everything while the other is very picky. We thought the food was good and the atmosphere was something my grandchildren was not accustomed to was perfect.
We went for the St. Patrick’s Day buffet. It was awesome. It was my first visit here, but it definitely won’t be my last, the food was outstanding!!!
I have been coming to Science Hill for over 20 years! I just love it! Food and service are always outstanding!
Science Hill is such a lovely spot. Wonderful food, beautiful surroundings. Great “off the beaten path” restaurant. Loved it.
Food was quiet good. It wasn’t quite to the old standard but much improved over last fall. We wanted corn pudding and tomato aspic but neither were served today. There was the best crowd that we’ve seen in the past year, so they are making good headway on bringing it back to the old standard. Congratulations, we’ll see you again soon.
I have dined at Science Hill Inn for over 50 years, since I was a young girl.
It never disappoints and is as lovely as always
Fabulous food, service, and ambiance! Then a near-museum experience to tour the adjoining Wakefield Scearce gallery of English antiques - some of which dated to the early 1700s and late 1600s. Amazing experience!
They need to get more waiters/waitresses. Our waitress was doing her best to keep up, but she needed help. Very slow getting food out.
Three friends and I recently went to Science Hill for a Saturday lunch. It was not very crowded, but there was only 1 waitress serving the whole restaurant. (We felt so sorry for her, she was trying her best) We were there for over 2 hours, which really cut into the other things we had planned for the day! The food was good, but not a big selection. We had heard so many wonderful things about Science Hill, but were REALLY disappointed!
My wife and I are former residents of Shelby County, now living in Louisville, but we still find time to make it out to Science Hill for brunch and other occasions. The new ownership has only improved upon this institution whose tenure serving delicious meals in an elegant surrounding by attentive servers is measured in decades. Most recently we attended the Valentine's Day pre fix dinner. The table was adorned with a silver Julep Cup containing beautiful, fresh roses; the menu included a choice of two appetizers, salads, main dishes and desserts. Of course, my wife and I chose one of each and shared, so we had the best of both worlds. Exquisite!
Great Valentine’s experience. The food was delicious, the service was great and the ambiance of old Science Hill could not have been better.
Love the elegant historic atmosphere. Our reservations were for lunch on a Wednesday. There was only one server and I counted 22 people dining. I'm sorry I don't have her name because she was great! Under such pressure she was so nice and we had prompt service. I really don't know how she did it with such grace.
We had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and kale and it was very good.
I will definitely be returning!
We came on a Sunday, not realizing a buffet was the only option; nothing on their web-site menu mentioned a buffet. Not sure why any restaurant thinks a buffet is the way to go anymore, maybe the general public isn't as discerning as we are. Don't get me wrong, we aren't 5 star, chef-only dining connoisseurs by any stretch. We've found some of the best food we've ever had from trucks, huts, roadside stands and alleys in some of the most unlikely places in the world. Buffet food, though, is almost always mediocre at best and the offerings at Science Hill Inn fit right into that class. There was nothing notably terrible but nothing exactly memorable either. It was food, it was edible, we didn't get sick.
Our server was very polite and friendly and the service was ok. We always figure outstanding service just amounts to whether or not our drinks ever go empty before we have to ask and whether or not our server can be located within about 15 seconds if we need something and if it arrives within about another 15 seconds delivered by a smiling face. Given how many restaurants are understaffed for service by their management, we know this is often not possible for any one overworked server so we try hard to not be overly demanding. At Science Hill our service was nothing to really complain about but it wasn't outstanding either, which probably shouldn't have been that difficult to achieve since this was a buffet and it wasn't very busy.
The best part of dining at Science Hill was the historic old building that houses the restaurant. They have a very unique environment with some great local history. It was one of the quietest restaurants I think I've ever been to. After far too many meals sitting far too close to terribly obnoxious people at neighboring tables, I hate to complain about sound level, but it was almost too quiet at first until some music started playing.
We'd like to give it another chance sometime to try their food from the menu.
We celebrated a friend's birthday during their lunch hours. The food was delicious and the service great. We were not rushed and enjoyed the afternoon very much.
4+ generations of my family have enjoyed Science Hill through the years. I was disappointed in this visit but wish the new chef well. The food is not up to the standard of excellence of our past experiences--for example, the time-honored offering of shrimp and grits were swimming in an oily sauce and served in a bowl. Both the sauce and the presentation could be improved. That said, the shrimp were cooked to perfection. The chef made several passes through the dining room but stopped to make no contact with anyone. During our dining time, there was also some audible commotion in the kitchen (shouting) and our table was towards the front of the dining room--quite a distance away. I would like to see Science Hill thrive and suggest the chef deal with his staff morale (the shouting in the kitchen, already mentioned, and more staffing in the dining room: there was one server on for the entire lunch service-- she did her best). I also suggest the chef reach out to his patrons and get to know them.
We were there on a Sunday and the buffet was the only option. We were given a table next to the fireplace and the dining room was lovely. Food was good but the tables on which the buffet was sitting was covered with spilled food. The utensils to be used for each dish needed to be cleaned as well or replaced as they were caked with food. For example the same spoon had been used by earlier diners in both the beets and the potatoes and had never been cleaned. Several others were so caked with food it was difficult to use them. No one tidied up the area the entire we were there. None of the dishes were labeled and we had to guess what some of it was. In spite of the unappetizing visuals on the buffet table, the food was quite good. Loved the hot brown and the bourbon bread pudding!
The historical setting, the great old Kentucky heritage cooking, and the superb service makes it one of our favorite "Sunday buffets". I'm still thinking about those lima beans and cornbread and biscuits!
Wonderful food, lots of vegetarian options. Our children loved the fried chicken and mashed potatoes.
Science Hill Inn always brings memories of great food, historic setting and beautiful surroundings during the holidays. I always visit during Christmas holidays if I can.
We had a delicious lunch. The hot water cornbread and homemade biscuits were just perfect. We all got different entrees and everybody loved their food. It's a beautiful, historical setting and the young chef and his staff are doing an awesome job. We will definitely come back.
Food was delicious with excellent service.
It is really a treat to have lunch @ Science Hill.. The food was great and our server and the service was outstanding.
Hot brown was minimal at best. Over cooked. Too small a skillet to pull that off. Dressing in salad tasted bottled. Too much vinegar. No deserts I would have. I don’t like cinnamon. No other choices. Really. Such a beautiful place. Just fair. Wine selection was poor. My husband ended up with cold bread pudding soup.
We have had better experience's at Science Hill. This visit was unimpressive. Table was next to kitchen so had a lot of swinging doors & employees who were having issues and discussing them outside the kitchen. Continued to get bumped so I moved to other side of our table. When food arrived, my husbands catfish was not served. We were told they had dropped it so had to make it again. So by the time they brought it out, my son & I had almost finished our lunch.
Server did apologize.
Food was good.
Visitor from out of country.
My wife and I have been going to this restaurant for over 50 years. Our visit Wednesday 12/19 was a great disappointment. It began with the hot water cornbread. What was served was a small wad of cornbread that tasted as though it had been cooked in old oil. Not at all like it used to be. My wife had the catfish. It was very thin and was no better than what you get at a fast food restaurant. My pot pie was nothing special. The biscuit was too "cake like" instead of being like a pie dough. Our tomato soup was the only thing that tasted good. We noticed that it had also been changed. We often brought out of town guest to Science Hill for the experience and great food. That will no longer happen. We will not be returning.
Science Hill is only open from 11:30am to 2:30pm. That was OK for us. The service was great. The food was great. Looking forward to going back again.
This was the 30th year I've come for a Christmas luncheon at Science Hill: 27 years with my beloved mother and the last three with my new husband, since she passed in 2015. I was widowed 4 years ago and married my high school sweetheart from NJ of 50 years last year. We never lost touch and we decided to start this new chapter in our lives and continue the tradition that was so important to me! The food is SO Kentucky and such a delightful experience. I look forward to many more years experiencing Science Hill!
My lunch was the shrimp and grits. It was delicious but a very small serving for the $16 price.
Service was very very slow. Several people in the party had uncooked chicken. We got up and got our own refills. Portions were quite small for the cost.
Excellent. Great service & food.
Try to return each year as it is so lovely. Service is impeccable and the atmosphere can’t be any better.
We had a very enjoyable lunch. The menu was vaired gourmet home cooked. Everything was decorated for christmas which provided a lovely atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and attentive.
We had a wonderful time celebrating a friend's birthday! The Christmas decorations were beautiful and the food was delicious!
We had a lovely visit to Science Hill. We expected great ambiance, but were pleasantly surprised with the excellent food and service. Thank you.
The four of us had a wonderful meal and great conversation. The toured the gallery and made a few purchases!
Service was terrible. Our table of 7 waited 15-20 min. before getting WATER... Food was mediocre at best. One half cup of chicken salad and hard chunks of fruit was NOT worth $10! We'll come to Science Hill again... but not for lunch!!
This has been a holiday tradition for years. I did not get there last year after the reopen so was really looking forward to this year. Several favorites from the old menu were unavailable. The shrimp and grits were ok but nothing compared to the old days! No more brown sugar pie so we ordered the pumpkin which was clearly a frozen baked pie and not tasty or edible! Spoke to several servers who said they have passed on the complaints of regular customers but it falls on deaf ears to the new owner! The service was still exceptional! Guess this tradition will be left in the past as a fond memory! Won’t go back!
My friends and I love dining at Science Hill. The food is terrific and the servers are beyond friendly and professional! The atmosphere is beautiful. The only thing I would recommend is possibly paying at the tables as the line became pretty backed up and slow. Overall it was a great experience! We will be back!
