Schooners Coastal Kitchen & Bar Ratings and Reviews
Went here on a breakfast date with my boyfriend. Ended up spending a lot for seemingly not much. The dishes were gorgeous but his shrimp and egg scramble was notably bland and uninteresting, and the strawberries on my waffle were sour. For what the dishes were, they weren't worth the price. And our waiter was overly hyper to take our order; but slow to bring us the check.
The only things we really enjoyed was the view, the ambiance, and the incredible orange juice. Probably won't be coming here again, but it was worth a shot. Might come for dinner instead on another occasion.
We had 7:00 reservations in the dining room, but wound up in the bar at 5:00 and decided to stay there (the bar serves both the bar menu, which includes happy hour and the full dining room menu). In all, we spent over 3 hours ordering items from both menus.
Service was very good, and we were there long enough to be served by two different serving staffs. Cocktails were fine, although no better than what you can get at a BJ's restaurant.
The food itself was hit & miss, however. My calamari was delicious. We got a three-oyster special from the happy hour menu, and one was disgusting, one was okay, the third was great. My wife's mussels were pretty tender, although many of them were sandy. And the broth was really boring. The Caesar salad was good, as was the chocolate mint mud pie that we shared.
But overall, the good service doesn't overcome an adequate bar and a VERY spotty kitchen -- especially at a hotel of this caliber. If I were staying at the hotel again, I would go for the Caesar and calamari, and I would go elsewhere for pretty much everything else.
We have made Schooners our landing spot for Thanksgiving dinner for the last several years when we are in Monterey. We love being seated with a view of the sea and reflections of the setting sun on the bay. We arrived 20 minutes early for our reservation and to our surprise the hostess gave us two different choices for seating!
We were quite happy with the menu choices the chef created for this year's dinner choices. Our server helped us through the menu given some of the dietary preferences of our group. The service as well as food was outstanding - despite a very busy evening.
There was a miscue between servers which meant it took longer than expected for someone to come take our orders, but they apologized profusely and bent over backwards to make sure we were taken care of. Great experience. Food was good, and you can't beat the gorgeous view!
Schooners is simply outstanding! From the friendly reception to the exceptional wait staff to the amazing menu. The chef certainly knows how to entertain ones pallet! Our group enjoyed everything from the perfectly cooked and scrumptious calamari appetizer, to the roast special, to the outstanding seafood stew and to my favorite awesome swordfish on spinach with grilled vegetables and perfect tapenade! Wow!! Oh did I mention the perfect creaser salad and to die for crab bisque starters and we ended on baked apple and cinnamon roll with vanilla bean ice-cream! We enjoyed the restaurant experience so much on our last visit to Monterey we had to take our good friends on our recent visit and it was wonderful again! Also there is not a bad seat in the house and the scenery and view of the Bay is simply spectacular! Bravo Schooners! Wish we lived closer and could visit more often. We'll see you all again soon!! The Kossack and Furtado families...
Great first impression! The food and drinks were excellent, not to mention this place has a gorgeous ocean view, but the real stars here are the people! Fantastic individualized service from the hostess Mayra, to the talented and personable bartender, to our exceptional server Steve, and the rest of the help staff who made our special night even more memorable! We were celebrating our engagement, and everyone made our time there just perfect! Thank you all! We will surely be back.
We were enjoying our 46th. Jackie at the front desk set up a table by the window, a gift certificate and comp champaign. It was a very enjoyable evening. The fillet was great!! The whole Hotel experience was perfect. We'll probably come back next year for our 47th.

We did honor this reservation but ate in the bar so we could watch game seven of the WS. I gave the hostess my name and told her that I had a reservation. I tried to call the restaurant 6 times but no one answered the phone. Overall we had an amazing dinner.
This was our first visit to Schooners and we could not have been more pleased with the experience. Very personable and attentive service at our booth table with pleasant view. Salad and dinner timing was right on and both were excellent. The ambience was comfortable and sound level was low enough to allow easy conversation. Note: it took us a few minutes to find our way in... but we’ll worth the treasure hunt!
Very attractive dining room at the Monterey Plaza Hotel. The food however left much to be desired. I had Petrale Sole and it was unrecognizable as Petrale Sole. It was very thick, square shaped and flavorless. Two of my companions had the side orders of macaroni and cheese with their dinner and they were very disappointed. The dish was large penne type pasta with a bland thin cheese sauce that tasted of uncooked flour. Overall it was a disappointing experience and we will not return even though we do like the hotel and have stayed there many times.
we came from Utah and picked up our daughter from University of Cal for the weekend. We had just a wonderful dinner, great food, not rushed at all and loved the sounds of the ocean, and enjoyed seeing everyone having a great evening. Thanks for making this a great time as a family. We will come again!
The location with a view of Monterey Bay is great and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Our meals, however, left a little to be desired. I had the clam chowder as an appetizer but it mostly consisted of the soup base with very little clams, potatoes or anything else. My wife's Caesar salad was okay, just the right amount of dressing, but a little flat. For the entrees, I had the Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna which was served at the perfect temperature and my wife had the Pan Seared Petrale Sole. By nature, sole and Ahi tuna do not have a strong flavor, however, sauce (on the sole) and the sesame seed crust (Ahi) did little to enhance the flavor. Overall, the meals were a little flat on taste. The portion size was just right. There are lots of other menu choices - maybe we just picked incorrectly - but we were both in the mood for good seafood.
We were on vacation for our anniversary trip and had used open table for the reservation. As most do, we asked for a table to see the ocean. We arrived early and the seated us at bar seating side by side, outside, even though there were open tables in a number of areas. There were no external heaters in our area. Before our food came, it had become so chilly a lady came out and offered people blankets. So when we received our food it cooled quickly leaving over half of the meal cold. Overall, a very disappointing experience for the expectation and price of the evening.
