A darling little place with surprisingly chic interior. The tempura was excellent!
Granted, we were at School for a restaurant week $25 prix fixe meal. The appetizer offerings, while numerous and generous, were not remarkable. We were given a choice of 3 different rolls, which were fine but not particularly inventive or tasty. Ice cream for dessert was tasty and a nice finishing touch. We've been to School before and had great meals there, so this experience was a little disappointing.
My wife & I went here for sushi dinner. It was delicious. It was nice how the ginger & wasabi is laid out in containers on the table. The service was fantastic. Every finished plate was removed from our table within 30 seconds. Unbelievable!
Waiter was rude and tried rushing us the entire time. Quantities of sushi are small but the quality is excellent. Would highly recommend.
We have been several times and enjoy it every time. We've tried several different dishes and they all have been fantastic.
This place is hidden a little, however once you find it off of Richmond Road, you will not be disappointed. The sushi is excellent, and the rest of the menu is great. The place is a little small, so you may need a reservation, if you want to sit at a table and not at the bar. If you haven't been to this p[ace, do yourself a favor and go.
Everything was pretty good, sushi was very good. Prices are a little high compared to similar restaurants.
While the portion sizes are rather small for the money, the taste/quality of the food more than makes up for it. A fun place to save up for and try a lot of different plates with friends.
We had the sushi platter for 2. Well prepared. Decent miso soup. Wait staff attentive.
Over all great food...love the space..service was alittle lacking to start but ended well.
The sushi was very good, especially the spider roll. It's worth a little extra money for decent wine, atmosphere and very good sushi than to try to get by with a cheap venue.
If you haven't tried this restaurant, you are missing out on some of the best Japanese food in Lexington.
Outstanding 5 course Valentine's Day prix fixe menu. Everything was great. Only complaint was our condescending server with terrible people skills.
Went to celebrate a birthday, and had a wonderful experience. The staff was extremely helpful, efficient and courteous. The food was excellent! The restaurant was very accommodating to dietary needs. Highly recommended!
We had the prix fixe Valentine's meal, with wine pairing. All the courses were excellent, and the value, with the wine pairing (4 glasses each of either wine, sake, or a cocktail) for only $15.00 more, was much greater than that at other Lexington restaurants. We'll definitely be back to sample from standard menu.
We were a group of 6 dining together at School. Mys husband and I started with some hot sake flavored with ginger. It hit the spot on a very cold evening. Then we ordered the tofu appetizer, the chicken kabobs, and pork dumplings...all very good. Four of us ordered sushi, and 2 ordered dinners. Our sushi came out, looked pretty, tasted divine. The 2 dinners never showed. Our server must have forgotten to put in the order, but by the time we realized their dinners weren't coming out, we were done with our sushi. Those of us who ate enjoyed our meal, but the whole experience was diminished by the couple who went home hungry. Our server never returned to our table. A woman came over, apologized, and we left.
Really enjoyed this place. Great sushi, great beer. Even have draft beer which is rare for a sushi place.
This was our first experience at this restaurant and we were so pleased. The food and the service were both awesome! The wasabi pork dumplings and the california roll with teriyaki steak on top are must-haves and will keep us coming back.
I opted for beef fillet and my spouse had a seafood dish smothered in a white cheesy sauce. We both enjoyed our meal, although the vegetable servings with my fillet were miniscule. I guess that makes the meal gourmet! I usually love to fill up on vegies and keep my meat portion small.
We both cleaned our plates and were rather taken back by the waiter's comment that "wow, I've never seen anyone finish all their food before!" .
The worst part of the experience was the frigid temperature of our table by the window. Yes it is winter, but I saw some empty tables that weren't by the window. We wore our winter coats throughout the evening and I tried to warm my hands over the candle on the table! The wait staff were not especially friendly.
Room was cold, as if no heat there. Almost no Sushi on the belt. Advertisement in home page showed a lot of Sushi on the belt.
I was misled by that. Also not clear the price was for a piece or two, So I was misled. Never return to this store.
Tomoka and her staff have a gem. I was shocked after eating there that it wasn't that busy. I didn't eat sushi off the conveyor system, just didn't want to chance it but the sushi i did order was insane. We also ordered the steak bites and the filet was very tender.
Genuine Japanese cuisine and choices that one does not find at other Japanese resaurants. It has a fun selection of menue items.
We thoroughly enjoyed our entire dining experience at School. The decor makes you feel like you've traveled outside of Lexington and the food completes the journey. We always enjoy their authentic Japanese dishes like Sunomono with Octopus. We can't wait to come back and try their $45 tasting menu for New Years.
We are so happy to have found School. We heard about it from friends and loved the personal service we received from the staff. The manager came by and was happy to recommend a few items to our group. We were pleased with her selections. The Crispy Tuna Roll is a must try. We also enjoyed the Hazy View Roll. We can't wait to come back and try more items.
The food was decent, but the entrees came out before the appetizers. That wasn't too big of a deal but the manager Jessica was awful. She had a horrible attitude and made the experience entirely unpleasant. Sure, the food was ok, but I wouldn't recommend going here unless you like being yelled at. Honestly, there are better Japanese restaurants in Lexington that provide better service at a cheaper price.
As always..........Excellent !!!
we had a most enjoyable evening. the food was excellent as was the service.
School is a one of the few real sushi restaurants to eat in Lexington and I have always enjoyed spending time there. I will absolutely return with friends and family very soon!
Very fresh with non-traditional items on the menu
School offers several items that are not seen on typical "American-style" sushi bars, offerings that are more typical of true Japanese sushi cafes, plus a sushi-conveyor belt system that you usually don't see outside of San Francisco or NYC. And the service was superb.
We especially love when they have events................like a set menu. If you like adventure. We have never been disappointed.
We enjoy The School and feel Lexington is fortunate to have this restaurant. This week was the $25.00 special, ( The choices were all good, but were not our favorite ones). They were also accommodating in switching out when I was allergic to one of the items.
I hadn't been in Lexington for a few years, but when I came back I went to School. The food is great and they have some pretty authentic specials. The sushi is good, although you seem to only see the more boring popular stuff on the conveyor belt. You can ask the sushi chefs for whatever you want, though. This time we didn't order anything off the regular dinner menu, but I have before and it was great. Overall probably the best Japanese place in Lexington.
Oh, and their cocktails and desserts are always interesting! Make sure to save room.
They have an interesting list appetizers and I'd recommend the duck and Camembert spring rolls, which are decent-sized, tasty and generously filled. For the entrees, the seafood mixed fry was good and included an oyster and a scallop. The pan-fried chicken, despite the poorer ingredients, was a remarkable dish, with a surprisingly good tomato sauce - being from Italy, I'm very picky on this! Desserts are the weakest part of the menu and could use a little more of the French inspiration. Unlike in other reviews, service was not slow at all.
The appetizer menu was impressive. The roll was very good. I think for the money, we could have gotten more sushi for the same price at another restaurant. The service was very good.
Wonderful place for sushi, great food and great service.
It was my first time eating at this establishment. I've lived in larger metropolitan areas all my life -- so my expectations on the quality of the sushi were tempered.
The service was terrible. We waited 25 minutes to place our food order after being seated. Our server walked past us about 10 times without even attempting to take our order, check on us, or anything remotely related to proper service in a decent establishment. In the end, the hostess ended up taking our order. The food was lackluster at best. The sushi was OK -- not bad, but not great. It's obvious from the last few ratings and reviews that this place is on a downslide
The spicy tuna crunch roll did not come with crunch, that part was left off of the roll. The rice on the roll was hard. I have had better at kroger which is pretty bad. The music was good. Overall, i don't think i would dine there again.
Went there on Saturday night; they are open until 11. Have a sushi conveyor that's pretty cool but you can rack up a tab before you know it.
Said they had French and Japanese on the menu but only saw one appetizer than I would have classified as French; my noodles had an Indian flair.
Overall was good food; service/wait between courses was a little slow, but staff did their best to make sure you were kept apprised of the delay and checked if you wanted more sushi while you waited (thus watch racking up a tab). Would recommend people giving it a try, but didn't make enough impact to make it a favorite of mine.
Food was fantastic. Service started off slow but got better. Will definitely be back.
