The food was very good and the staff friendly, but: the main reason we went was the asparagus (and some other spring greens) heavy menu on line. When we got there, only 2 asparagus dishes were listed on the written menu and one (asparagus tempura) wasn't available. The hostess mentioned they had a special of white asparagus, which we ordered. It was great-but she didn't mention it was $38, which I think is essential when something it that pricey, and we thought it was an appetizer. It took forever for us to get our mains (schnitzel and the spaetzel) and no one came to explain. After dinner, the lovely hostess apologized for the wait (tho' we hadn't actually complained) and offered us free dessert and coffee; we took 1, but it was late and we were full and it would have been better to simply deduct something else from the bill. Again-food was very good, and I know it's not foh fault if the kitchen is slow (unless someone forgot to put in our order). But the wait and the fact that no one mentioned the price for the white asparagus would make us think twice about coming back.

Food and vibe was very good. But the service was incredibly slow. It only looked like 2 people were manning the floor and bar? Not ideal for lunch in the financial district…

Although it seems modest, Schilling is really a destination restaurant for Austrian cuisine. The menu is not large -- always listen for the specials! -- but the pork or chicken schnitzel is tremendous, as are the appetizers and other main courses. The wine list is excellent and they also seem to keep talented bartenders. The place is cozy in winter; in summer they can open the whole front, not unlike a garage door, which gives a very welcoming feel. The waitresses are alert and friendly.

Tucked away on the shady side of a narrow street - this gemstone is no secret! Early arrivals are 6:00 pm by 6:30 the restaurant was full - exploding at the seems with great scents, lively conversations and a creative bar! The host/ server was professional and knowledgeable about the menu, the bar and pure joy to interact with. Orders are more then adequate for solo dining, however, by sharing you can sneak-in an order of Frikadellen ( veal and pork) fork tender meatballs in a mushroom gravy that would have been sinful to overlook. An order of chicken schnitzel was a small platter of crispy tender white meat ( also available in pork or veal) served with a side of Cucumber Dill Salad, Potato Salad and , Lingonberry dressing. ( small portions of side yet easily shared by 3) The Spatzle - described as served with:Roasted Portobello Mushrooms, Mustard Greens, White Yams and Farmhouse Cheddar - was far better then mine ( and I learned in Dresden) who knew cheese could be so light/ creamy and flavorful and I will never serve mine without topping of crispy fried onions! Of course there was no room for dessert and yes, of course we ordered The nutted Apple strudel with sobs of vanilla ice cream! The cocktails are as creative as a: Blanco Tequila, Persian Cucumbers, Pickled Green Tomatoes, Mint-Black Pepper Syrup delight - or my simple ( not) gin sparkle with a wedge of jalapeño…

Very warm service, wonderful food. When we walked in, the hostess even kindly referred to a special request I made to sit at the bar, though we ended up at the table. Was very pleasantly surprised she checked and acknowledged this. Delicious food and wine - I would unquestionably return. Brought a European friend here who commented on the authenticity. Bravo.

Service was very slow. The menu on Open Table is much more extensive than what they actually offer in the restaurant. Lots of asparagus on the menu. Maybe too much compared with everything else they offer which isn’t too broad. We ordered Crispy Pencil Asparagus for our appetizer but took over 30 minutes until they gave us two appetizers on the house without us asking. Problem was one of the appetizers they comped us with was another asparagus appetizer. Did I mention too much asparagus?! We also got another green salad with cheese in the center. It was good. For our entree we ordered chicken schnitzel (huge portion and tasty) and Späetzle which is an interesting take similar to pot pie. Best description would be pot pie with Späetzle coated with crispy onions. It was good. French fries was good but salty. And then last but not least we got our crispy asparagus which was really good but again too much asparagus. For dessert we ordered Apple strudel. It was served Luke warm. Should have been served warmer. It was good. Nothing out of the ordinary. All in all mediocre experience. Most likely we won’t be back since there are so many other restaurants to try.

Thoroughly enjoyed our first experience at this neighborhood gem. Had a reservation, and upon arriving my wife and I were seated immediately at the last available table, excluding the long communal table in center of restaurant. Overall, wonderful experience. Service was excellent, food very good and moderate prices (similar to others in neighborhood). Gin martini seemed a bit small and they only had limited brands of Gin. I had ordered it “dry” with olives, and it came with a lemon twist and no olives. Not a big deal. I was celebrating a birthday, which was noted on my reservation, and the waitstaff surprised me with a candle on our dessert (strawberry strudel) which was delicious. Only other minor drawback was entrees on menu very limited. But all looked delicious. Would highly recommend this establishment for those in financial/lower manhattan.

The delicious food and the price were a perfect match at this Austrian-styled restaurant. However, there wasn't much space in between the tables and chairs, and the customers can occasionally, rather carelessly, come barreling through the narrow space and bump up against the back of the chairs, annoying the many seated customers along the way. Worse, none bother to apologize. Selfish New Yorkers?

I hosted a client lunch here, and both my client and I were really impressed - the fit out, the food (clearly all fresh and top quality ingredients), the service. There weren't many other people in the restaurant, so atmosphere was lacking (to be fair it was Monday lunchtime), but that didn't matter, we both thorough enjoyed it. Thank you

First time and enjoyed it quite a bit. Ambience is cool, music was a nice touch, food was great, and service outstanding. Only comment for improvement is to increase the size of the alcoholic beverages. 18 dollars for a martini(guessing it was a 3ounce maybe 4) I think is a bit high. But it was a really great dining experience and will go back

Mushroom soup too salty (3/10) winter salad was very sour and bitter (1/10), chicken liver mouse was alright (6/10). The schnitzel was nothing special and the sides were not great (6/10). Spatzel not that good as very cheesy and lots of water from veggies (3/10). Apple strudel was ok (6/10).

This is one of the times where I've been very excited about a restaurant to then be completely underwhelmed. The server was lovely and they have a nice outdoor dining area. For a birthday decided to try the restaurant week lunch menu, which consists of some of Schillings regular offerings. They were out of 2 of the vegetarian options I had selected, and as someone with mild lactose intolerance, the käsespätzle was the last choice. They said it could be prepared without cheese, which I was grateful for, but the execution of key components was lacking. As an Austrian who makes spätzle, they were overcooked and disintegrating as you put them in your mouth and were under-salted. To compensate for the lack of cheese and salt, maybe the kitchen compensated with an extra large mound of over-salted fried onions which took up half the bowl (I removed half of the onions for the later photos). While they made up for the lack of salt, they overpowered the subtle flavours of the yam and greens. Also not fully drained, the noodles and onions continued to get soggy as they sat in a pool of water. The salad was good fresh and crisp, but was not my first choice as they were out of the soup and blood beets I would not return and pay full price for this meal.

First impression was awful. After walking through curtain, we were greeted with looking at light fixtures over main table that were crusted with dust and grease. After a scan around the rest of the restaurant, and it was filthy (especially decorations on shelf above side tables). Our table had just been wiped, was still wet, and smelled like a dirty dish rag. Menus looked old and also dirty. Food was decent and our waiter was friendly and attentive. But could not get past the poorly maintained conditions and won’t return.

Service was sub par. I made a booking months in advance and they insisted they could only sit us at the bar. She finally said she only had one table for 2 but it wasn’t ready (we were a party of 2 only…) and I said that’s fine? She then asked the other people if they wanted it (they were a party of 3 with a booking also…). Very strange.
