We stay at the St. James Hotel about every 6-8 weeks and eat 3 meals in Scarlet. Again, on our recent visit, the food was spectacular and the service great. The chef at Scarlet is at the top of his game. Highly recommended.

We came for Valentine’s Day, and drove about an hour away. We have never been to scarlet kitchen, and were blown away by the food. Please give your compliments to the chef, we will definitely be back! Can’t wait to try out your patio this summer. Thank you for the great experience!! Can’t wait to be back.

Scarlet has really upped its game. The food, in a word, was exceptional. Amazing flavor in everything and great service. I've always loved the St. James and have spent a lot of time there over the past decade, but this trip had me blown away by the food. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough.

My wife and I enjoyed a Valentine's weekend getaway at the St. James Hotel. Since the outside temperatures were subzero, we booked Saturday night dinner at the Scarlet Restaurant at the St. James. The $65 prix fixe menu was intriguing. Four courses with three choices in the first three each creative in description but so exceptional in execution by new Chef Cory. The champagne feta salad with roasted squash, pomegranate seeds and candied pecans was among the most balanced, flavorful salads we've ever eaten. On the second course, my wife shared her generous meat and cheese board and I shared with her my umami-rich sweet and spicy fried rice, a blend of crispy sweet potato pieces, bean sprouts, scallions, jalapeno, pickled fresnos, and cilantro seasoned with soy mayo and sesame seeds and topped with sweet Thai chili-seared pork belly. If that was the sole dish of the evening, I would have left satisfied! My third course cherry noir duck was a point-counterpoint of herb and garlic duck leg confit and medallions of duck breast herb oil seared over roasted brussel sprouts + bacon + white hominy bits sprinkled with a bourbon and black cherry gastrique. Again, one of the best dishes I've ever enjoyed. We ran a list of comparisons from a bistro in Paris to a restaurant in Denver, the prior best duck dish I'd had. My wife enjoyed a cauliflower puree, asparagus, charred tomato in a Calabrian chili sauce over handmade orecchiette pasta, topped with arugula and cracked pepper garnish. Fabulous! The fourth course dessert options were chocolate or vanilla, both creatively plated with the chocolate mousse drops on chocolate layers and ganache between piped meringue with cherries served under smoked glass hood. What fun! The drunk in love vanilla panna cotta with pomegranate seeds, poached peaches and red wine sauce was a grand finale. We envision this young chef's meteoric rise in regional cuisine!

Tasty food and excellent service! Quiet atmosphere also.

Our server, Tony, was efficient and friendly. The food (steak salad and walleye sandwich) was beautifully presented. The hot tea came with fresh cream and honey. The background music was relaxing, perfect volume. Watching eagles fish on the Mississippi added to the experience. Our take-out shrimp alfredo dinner was also enjoyed immensely. And we felt very safe in spite of the Covid pandemic.

My husband and I ate here for our wedding anniversary. The food was amazing and the waitress was the best! She even remembered my drink order from the night before.

The atmosphere & decor were light & airy. Water view which is nice too. I look forward to coming back in the warmer months to sit outside & enjoy the view. The service was average, we had to go up to bar for a soda refill. I think they were short staffed because of Covid-19. They also stop serving breakfast @11:00 when check out from hotel is @11:00. That was disappointing too.The food was very good & we felt the prices were reasonable.

The food was just outstanding, sometimes a surprise for a hotel restaurant. We both had Swedish meatballs, which were the best I’ve ever tried. We also ate breakfast the next morning which was also excellent. The wild rice breakfast bowl was a big hit. Service was great both times. Ambiance was just average. We will definitely go back next time we are in the area. Highly recommend this restaurant. They easily accommodated our gluten free requirements.

Food and ambience is good. But the service we received was poor - 1/2 hour wait for a simple breakfast. No good explanation by our waiter, who was so busy chatting with other patrons that we had to ask him to check on our order.

Great service and incredibly fresh food. We were visiting from out of town, and a little disappointed with the overall options in Red Wing. We came across Scarlet Kitchen and Bar and there was no question on the decision. Our service was wonderful, attentive, and there was a varied menu for all tastes. Would definitely go back.

Lobster bisque with no lobster and a total BS response from staff ("it's been that way for years")....but still charging $9 a bowl? Really off-putting. What's next? Fish tacos with no fish? Pepperoni pizza with no pepperoni? Total fleece job. Good luck in the future.

Even though I made a 5:00 pm reservation a week early, requesting a window seat, we were told when we arrived we were told no window seating was available because they were "reserved". However, there were 3 empty window tables and these remained empty. This was disappointing because we were celebrating our 26th anniversary! Both my husband and I ordered wild rice soup to start - which was excellent. I ordered Swedish meatballs. They were just ok. The dill sauce overpowered everything and the meatballs themselves were course and overcooked. My husband ordered an apple chicken entree that he said was good. I am a big fan of Jimmy's (which wasn't open) so I was disappointed to find a bright unromantic "kitchen" ambiance. Our server deserves 5 stars, as does the bartender who made a special drink for me.

The food was great, but the portions were too big. Without a refrigerator in our room, I could not take some to go. I usually don’t care about leftovers. But the fettuccini was so good, I would have liked some the next day.

My wife and I went for lunch. We sat on the patio which which was very pleasant and, while it was cool outside, had space heaters at most tables. We had not eaten so we were pretty hungry. We decided to start with a couple of appetizers: Cheese curds and spinach and artichoke gratin. The cheese curds were battered with "sturdiwheat" which I was not familiar with but had a texture which reminded me of cornmeal. They come either plain or buffalo. We chose the former. The cheese was nice and melty, the batter was nice and crispy. It came with a dipping sauce which was not necessary.

My wife and I had mix reviews on the the second appetizer. I very much enjoyed it while she didn't enjoy it as much. It is cheesier than other similar dishes which made it very rich. My wife would have preferred more spinach and artichoke,

The portions of both apps were so generous (the gratin could have been shared with two other people) that neither of us had room for an entree, especially because we both wanted to try one of the four desserts on the menu. We selected the bourbon molasses pecan pie which was one of the best I've ever had. I don't like pecan pies that have a thin layer of pecans on top and the rest of the pie is filled with overly sweet gloppy filling. This pie had plenty of pecans and a dense filling, with the molasses and, to a lesser extent, the bourbon flavors coming through.

We both had coffee which was strong and served in a large mug which our very attentive server, Diego, continued to top-off. There are many other items on the menu (e.g. grilled brie sandwich, salmon bruschetta board and poached pears with spiced vanilla ice cream) which we are looking forward to trying the next time we come.

My wife and I met a college friend we hadn’t seen for years at the Scarlet Kitchen & Bar. We had a great lunch and a great time in a great setting. The food and service were fabulous!
