Always a good meal here. Met with friends whom we hadn't seen in a year. Able to talk for over 2 hours. Quiet room. Tables suffiently apart. Food and service very good. Looking forward to our next visit.
Scaletta has been a go-to restaurant in my family for many years. We've celebrated birthdays, graduations, and we even had my pre-wedding dinner in a private room in the back. It's quiet, comfortable, and the Italian food is consistently good. It's filled with neighborhood regulars, including the occasional celeb. While I wouldn't call it inexpensive, my mom gets discount coupons for Monday and Tuesday, which make it quite affordable.
Classic, old-style upscale Italian. Dishes are prepared using the freshest ingredients. Particularly good for quiet conversation. A delightful throwback is the rolling pastry cart.
Am a long-time customer. Always get a warm welcome from staff as well as excellent food and service. A neighborhood standby!
Scaletta is as good and comfortable as always. One of my all time favorites
Scaletta serves delicious food. There is nothing on the menu that is not worth eating. The staff is friendly, the service is good, the restaurant is comfortable. Did I mention the food is really good? There is never room for dessert so I can not comment on dessert. I love a restaurant that serves such great food that I don't make it to dessert.
Disappointed. $300 for 4. They didn't have the first choice of wine, nor the second. A couple main courses weren't available. And at 9:00pm we were the only people in the dining room. Pass this one up. Not worth it. I felt sorry for the staff.
Great food, quiet, good service but too expensive. Bread could be better
While we like Scaletta for a regular dinner, we love it for special occasions. The food is great. The service is attentive, but you are allowed to take your time when you want an unhurried dining experience. We will go back...a lot.
always good food. friendly service. pleasant environment and vaied menu
Wonderful go to restaurant when we are in the neighborhood. Consistently great food and service. It's really "dining."
Wait staff was terrific! My food was well prepared and tasty. Looking forward to the next visit.
Always a pleasure. Good food, service, ambience. A keeper.
Neighborhood gem. Wonderful food and staff. We have been fans for years.
Food is good, not extraordinary. Service nice but slow
Excellent food and excellent service. Enough space between tables. Delicious homemade desserts. Can accommodate large groups but intimate enough for two.
Same food and same wait staff for at least 20 years. It does work however. Very middle age to older clientele. Freddie still at the door to greet you with a warm welcome. Great olives to start your meal
We appreciate that there is no music, so you can have a real conversation. the food is excellent.
Food was decent but restaurant and staff seem old and tired.
Wonderful staff! Fantastic food!
Never disappoints. Able to have conversation even in big group and food is consistently good
The food was absolutely terrible. It looked terrible and it tasted terrible. The salad was drowning in dressing. The maître d' argued with us when we mentioned that the wine was bad.
A very pleasant early Sunday dinner in a convenient location. The food was very good and the waiters were unobtrusive and friendly. The only negative comment is that their beer selection consists of a few lagers like Bud and Heineken. That may have been acceptable 10 years ago but in this age of microbreweries and craft beers it does not work
Outstanding as always! The food and service were superb!
Retro style northern Italian cuisine and ambience. No surprises, but well prepared food. Service was slow. Comfortable noise level allows for table conversation.
Wonderful restaurant with a welcoming staff, lovely decor and delicious food!
We have been frequenting this restaurant for years. The ambiance is comforting and quiet; and the food is consistently good. The wait staff is congenial and effective; and they never rush you to turn over a table.
I, and others of my family and friends, have eaten at Scaletta in the past. We have found it to be agreeable if a bit staid, but the food was good and reasonably priced.
On Saturday night (February 11, 2017), we noticed a great decline in this restaurant. We waited for an hour and half after arrival for our entrees, and when they did arrive some were tepid. The quality of the food was poor to mediocre. My fish was mushy and flavorless. A mushroom appetizer was greasy and disagreeable in taste. The table for four was tiny, and this caused my wife, who is quite graceful and not given to broad gestures, to bump into and spill an entire glass of water. It took some time to get attention from the staff to help us dry up the mess and replace our napkins. The service we did receive was delivered only after prominent gyrations or actual sleeve tugging to get attention. The restaurant was grossly understaffed, and the prices have risen to the level of that of far better restaurants.
We have since learned that ownership and/or management has changed in the past year or two. That shows. The four of us were unanimous in our disapproval, and we shall not return. I was, frankly, embarrassed that I had invited friends to this restaurant.
Avoid this place. It deserves to go out of business after so many years of reasonable success, and it probably will.
Made a reservation (same day) on opentable, trudged all the way down there, and they were closed! Shouldn't take reservations if nobody is going to be there! Isabella's (same block) was quite nice though . . .
Horrible experience at this restaurant!
At first waiter was rushing us even though restaurant was not crowded. Once we told him to slow down he listened. Great to find a restaurant on the upper west side where you can have a conversation with your spouse and friends.
Lovely restaurant, excellent food, QUIET enough to be able to talk without yelling, good service from waiters who have been there a long time.
We have been dining at Scaletta for many years. We enjoy the atmosphere and feel so comfortable there. Dinner is always tasty and the service is terrific.
Dining at Scaletta for dinner on January 20, 2017 was a most memorable experience! The three course menu selections for Restaurant Week were all excellent! My friend and I had a difficult time deciding what to order. I chose the minestrone soup, the boiled salmon with sides, and the chocolate gnanche cake. My friend selected the sliced tomatoes topped with fresh mozzarella cheese, red snapper with sides, and the mango mousse cake. Every morsel was delectable! The ingredients used to prepare each course were fresh and "top shelf". The service was excellent and the waiters were accommodating! We will definitely return to Scaletta for a "repeat performance" in the future!
Have eaten here many times andalways enjoyed it. Their Italian cuisine is great and they have our vote for the quietist restaurant in the city
Neighborhood gem. Our "go-to" place for many years. Warm, friendly staff, good food and service.
Very average food. we started out with the zucchini fries which were crunchy and tasty. I ordered the cheese ravioli with mushroom sauce which tasted like a frozen meal reheated. My friend ordered the spaghetti bolognese which was pretty good. The wine was ok. The dessert cart display looked very inviting for all winter germs to settle onto the cakes, so we skipped that part. Overall, it was a convenient dinner but I wouldn't dine here again.
Excellent setting and the food was wonderful. Can't wait to return!!
I love Scaletta. It has that lovely "old world" feeling -- welcoming, courteous, caring, genteel treatment by every member of the staff; good food reasonably priced; and a most pleasant ambiance. Whether I were coming with the family, with friends, or on a date, I'd be totally comfortable there.
Old time Italian with dependably good fare. Quiet and relaxing without being stuffy.
