Scaletta is a type of restaurant that is sadly becoming a rarity in NYC. It combines good food with a quiet, comfortable ambiance where you can actually converse with your dinner guests. The food is well prepared but don't expect cutting edge innovation. The service is the weakest point. While friendly and well-meaning, it seems overly chaotic with seemingly every server having a hand in serving every table. All in all though, they get the job done and we regularly dine here. Note: no grade inflation here, 5 stars are few and far between from me.

We have been here several times. The food is great. In fact, we enjoyed leftovers the following day wishing we saved more from the night before. The service this time was lacking. Waited for our entres and then nearly had to tackle someone to get the bill. We were not given attention.

That will not dissuade me from coming again. Also, they discontinue the cream cones. I was looking forward to that all day! Better luck next time.

Not enough waiters for all of the reservations. Our waiter too old to keep up with the crowd and not understandable. Food neither hot nor tasty.

Still amazing after all these years! Fine food and wine, professional service, and that rarest of NY commodities: a restaurant quiet enough to make conversation not just possible but a pleasure!

We were welcomed with the message that the kitchen was closed despite the fact that they have recieved notice of and were aware of that we had reserved a table at 8.00 pm. In line with that and due to no excuse other that the guy in charge had forgotten to take any action we have difficult to recommend this place to anyone.

Despite having a reservation and coming 10 minutes early, it took 45 minutes to be seated. Then the service was so bad, the poor hostess had to hustle around to cover for the waiter.

This is a traditional Italian restaurant with real table clothes and napkins and little bread plates. It has a retro feeling along with very good food. Try it!

This is an old-timers neighborhood restaurant outstanding for its genteel ambiance and low noise level. These make up for the somewhat clumsy and not exactly gracious wait staff. The food while uninspired is good in a down to earth way. It's a great place to go for a hearty meal and for being able to carry on a conversation without having to raise your voice.

This has always been one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I brought my boyfriend here for our one year anniversary, and it didn't disappoint! I ordered my usual lasagna, and he got spaghetti bolognese, which was also very good.

We enjoyed our meal enormously. Thank you. Only downside was our proximity to an extraordinarily loud American man for which the restaurant cannot be held responsible. What is it about some people who seem to believe that others want to hear their every word? Sadly it seems to be an elderly American disease.

Been here a few times. Food has always been good.

Service is generally good. This time, the waiters were somewhat preoccupied with a very large group that was farther along, and things fell behind for awhile.

A rare place in Manhattan with plenty of room between tables!

There were some problems in the kitchen the night we were there but even so the dishes they could prepare were so good, fresh and flavorful. This restaurant is so consistent. I am always happy to be here. The others with me had to explore the menu for "second choices" and found new favorites. Quiet, fine dining.

I have be coming to this restaurant for many years. It was quiet and elegant. It is still quiet but doesn't seem elegant. The prices were too high for the quality of food offered and the service is marginal. I have been to restaurants which have off nights and this may well have been one, but this restaurant should seem welcoming and the food more than mediocre every night. I'll try again, but not for a while.

The food was good if not very good . I had a dish I ordered of cheese ravioli, mushrooms , sun dried tomato's in a creme sauce . Its an entree but I ordered it as an appetizer . I saw a picture of about 6 raviolis on trip advisor . When I received them there was only 3 ravioli's on the plate pretty steep at $22 dollars for 3 raviolis. I felt since this was an appetizer he put less on the plate but didn't reduce the price on the bill. The flow of the place is not warming and the bar area I noticed only had one patron the whole time I was there . The dessert cart is always very nice and items all looked very appetizing ,but they had fresh strawberries and other berries but no whipped creme or zabaione to put them on. I asked the waiter what do they come with and he told me by themselves. The first hour I got to Scarletta's there was no management to be seen the waiters were running the show. Just as we finished a man who seemed like an owner showed up and started shaking hands. This is a restaurant with good food but needs a shake up. In NYC being just good isn't good enough.

A solid traditional Italian restaurant. Very good food and great service. Only drawback is that the cost a bit too high for what you get. There are several others who do pretty much the same thing that cost 3 to 5 less per item. Perhaps its the high rent.

The big room is spacious and quiet. That's why I go there!

The service is friendly and relaxed but not what you would call polished. The food is very old-fashioned Italian-red-sauce cooking, and given that it's still kind of mediocre. I really do go to Scaletta because there's room between the tables and you can converse without shouting or cupping your ear.

In New York today, that's amore!
