This place was recommended to me by a colleague, and it was a great recommendation. This place had great drinks and very tasty food. We had the pupu platter and a couple of the sushi rolls. It was all so good. The Korean ribs were my favorite and my partner loved the tapioca dumpling. This place is expensive but it should be expected. They take reservations but it wasn’t packed when we got there.
Good size portions and dishes were deliciously prepared. Low lighting. Had to use phone's flashlight to read the menu!
Very nice restaurant, but the only negative I have was that the table was very dark.
Tim, the waiter, is the absolute best! Super fun place to eat and drink with a savvy/cool vibe.
First, we were accosted by some irrational man living in his car parked around the corner of the restaurant. But we were nicely greeted when we entered the restaurant and led upstairs. Service was quick and attentive. We both ordered from the Prix Fixe menu. My wife had curry and I had the Korean ribs. We were both disappointed. The curry was watery, with uncooked carrots and limp flavor. And I've never had such salty ribs. I must have drunk five glasses of water. The rice was cool, dry and crunchy. Was it last week's rice? I wondered. The noise is beyond 'energetic.' At times, I couldn't hear my wife speak.
Given the combative street people lingering (living) around the restaurant and the lousy food, we won't be going back. We actively discourage any and all not to frequent.
We happen to be in town for Taste of Portland and were pleased to see Sauce Box was offering a Special Pre-Fix menu.
Overall I was pleased with the food and service.
Beautiful space too.
It made for a great way to celebrate my birthday.
Great food, but awfully slow service on a busy night, and quite noisy so probably not the best place to take a date to if you want to hear each other. I would still like to check this place again maybe on a weekday primarily because of the interesting dishes.
Saucabox is always fun. Every dish on the menu is delicious. Tim is a great waiter.
Amazing service and a great deal for Portland Dining Month!
Thank you MEGHANM!
Great date night spot but also great spot in general. Pupu platter is a must.
Thank you Anonymous!
Fun for celebrating.
Salmon dish was outstanding. Our wait person was super kind and efficient. Curry dish we also shared was a bit too bland for our tastes.
Neat place near Powell's. I recommend the bar often. Great happy hour!
Very slow service
The last two times haven't been the greatest from what used to be a great dining experience, very slow services, drinks came out slow, we waited 90 minutes for our dinner to arrive. All the waitress said they were understaffed and apologized.
The online menu didn’t match the restaurant menu, they didn’t have everything on the restaurant menu. The appetizer never came out, took 30 minutes to get a soda. Main dishes came out 15 minutes apart and was way to dark. Very disappointed
Hi Anonymous, We sent you a private message. We apologize for disappointing you. Our menu changes often. Online menus are representative and mostly represent what we offer, but we make daily menu changes based on fresh product. It sounds like you were in on a night we were not at our best. Valentine's weekend was a very busy one and I know we fumbled with a few guests with food and service. Again, very sorry. Please give us another try. Thank you.
Enjoy trying top PDX restaurants, and this place will not disappoint. Service great, servers always nearby and attentive. Food is good, but too predictable. Wish they challenged our taste buds more, considering what you are paying for. The talk of the food ended when leaving the door, but will return again. Wished they would offer some kind of happy hour offerings at the dining room, since the bar area gets crowded fast, and for folks like us that like to bring their minor kids to enjoy the happy hour experience at the dining table.
Valentine’s Day dinner
Everything seems ok, just overpriced for a normal (they called 3 course dinner) at $65 per person and don’t even include beverages.
Love the Javanese salmon. Used to have fried leeks on the top. Feb 13th was a lovely quiet experience in the beautiful dining room
Bartender questioned validity of my guest’s AZ driver license. He was grossly uninformed about AZ driver license regulations, made multiple false accusations, was very arrogant and as it turns out, had no basis for questioning the valid, state issued ID. This person is not competent to make any judgment on a customer’s ID. You’ve lost a very good patron of your establishment.
Good Morning Anonymous, We apologize for the inconvenience. I will investigate what happened and make sure the bartender is clear on valid out of state IDs. The state agency, The Oregon Liquor Control Commission is very active and gives large fines to bars and restaurants for serving someone underage. We do tell the bartenders to check all IDs and if there is any doubt as to the validity of an ID, not to serve. The bartender sounds to have been overly cautious and for that we are sorry.
Server was great!
Thank you Anonymous!
Really spectacular trip to Saucebox tonight. We had always wanted to spend time here (since we moved to Portland about 3 years ago) after hearing about their large cocktail list, flaming drinks, friendly staff, and good food. Saucebox did not disappoint! We sat with Maria at the bar and she dazzled us with not only her knowledge of the history of Saucebox, but her mixology expertise as well! Very cool concept bar here, somewhere between neo-Tokyo and 90's NYC. Lights are low so bring a flashlight! Lovely red candles light up the dark and Japanese animation plays upstairs all night---Music is some of my favorite dance stuff from the 'otts. Food was good, had the ribs and lots of sushi, all very good. I have NEVER had tapioca like this before and Maria let us know that they were one of the items which had survived years of being open. Very cool to keep those home-runs around.
We will definitely be back. Wasn't able to talk to the Manager and thank him for the experience but hopefully next time!
Thank you James!!
Exceeded my expectations. Saucebox is like a little oasis in wild west downtown. We showed up early for our reservation but they let us hang out inside with water, while the wind blew cold outside. Sake was hot, happy hour was a good deal (very large pad thai), and being from NYC, it reminded me a little of home in the lower east side. Not divey or gross like you would expect from downtown/oldtown. Sake was warmed pretty fast too, they said they warmed it with a water technique? Nice to know it's not nuked. Someone cares a lot about this place. Seems like the staff is young and cute, the lights are sexy and red, there is a big Japanese movie playing above, etc. Very shiny and black. Pretty dark in here, needed my phone to read the menu but made for fun convo with the server.
Service was absolutely horrible. Steak and salmon entrees got to the table before our pu pu plater and sushi. Shortly after the entrees came out. So did everything else. Our table was over crowded with food and the entrees got cold. At no point in time was our waitstaff helpful, accommodating, or apologetic. Food was actually pretty good but i wont come back because the service was that bad.
Just wanted to shout out to the staff of this place, thank you! Great atmosphere and super cool anime series on a giant projection on the ceiling. Really busy tonight but felt no pain. The bartender Maria was super cool and knew a lot about the cocktails, sold us on some painkillers and a volcano (on fire!). Nibbled some interesting items too: Tapioca dumplings (gooey outside, nice meaty, peanutty center) -- Ribs (salty but good) -- Wings (super smokey and delicious) -- and the Garden Salad (fresh and zesty) --- Ended up spending about 4 hours here. Time flies at Saucebox so be careful! :) Thanks!
We liked Saucebox a lot! Place was pumping when we arrived, slight line to get a table but luckily we had reservations. Pupu Platter was a neat throwback to the Trader Vicks days, sushi was good, looked at the ramen but was full of sushi so will have to wait for next time. Service was fast here, drinks a real highlight. My wife is from Hawaii originally and got a kick out of all the tropical drinks. Fun!
Date night. Took a while for drinks to be served. It took longer to eat our drinks than our food. Other than that we really enjoyed ourselves.
Food just wasn’t up to par...cheap imitation of departure in my opinion, the same prices without the same quality or taste. Save your money and spend it at departure.
Great for family style cuisine. Good small plate options. Great bar selections.
Waited 90 mins for no food. At the hour mark while asking if maybe the miso soup might be an option the pork buns came out. Decent flavor filling and raw dough. When at the two hour mark we asked for the check and a recommendation for other dining options the server seemed finally genuine. A complete failure from start to finish
Brent, I sent you a private message. Many who dined with us on 1/12 had the unfortunate experience of seeing a restaurant get crushed by an unexpected level of business. We are a popular spot and it is great to be super busy but due to a staffing issue, we didn't handle it well. The kitchen could not keep up that night and it affected more than one table and the entire staff were thrown off their game. We sincerely apologize. This is not typical. Please visit us again. You won't be disappointed.
We made our reservation and my husband and I wanted to have a nice dinner together on a Saturday night. Everything was wrong. We sat in some bar type seating with a clear view of the kitchen window and could see all the mess that emerged. First we were seated and it was fine. Service was great at the beginning. Then, we place our order and it falls apart. I heard the kitchen say “86 Ramen” which is what I ordered. Then the waitress looked to uncomfortable to come to our table to tell us about the delay so we sat with empty glasses (both water and from the bar) for about 40 minutes. The waitress came over and said she would check if she could do anything for the bill. My husband’s entree came, but I remained waiting. Eventually my meal came and not only did I wait 50 minutes, but it was cold! And not good.... they ended up taking my entree off of the bill, but there was no communication and if they would’ve told me it would’ve been so long because they ran out I would have just gotten something else. Never again.

Disappointed with my experience and SauceBox. I made a reservation a week in advance and still had to wait 15 minutes for a table in their insanely crowded entrance. Once seated is took about 10 minutes to get our drinks because they were waiting on dish ware to serve the drinks. Our waitresses nice but couldn’t keep track of any of our orders. We ended up not getting and item but getting duplicates of others. They had a toilet broken in the women’s restroom. Overall it was a rough night and to top it off we spent $50 a person and didn’t leave feeling satisfied. With all the great restaurants in Portland I have no need to return.

I normally love going to this place . Been there for happy hour . Took daughter there for dinner before school dance . Took 15 min before we were greeted at table. After 1 hour of no food daughters food came and I had to cancel my dinner to get to dance .

Great place! Kat was awesome. Good cocktails, creative food, awesome service.
Great service. I thought price was a bit high for the portion of the food.
The agedashi tofu was tough and not delicious and the edamame were not flavorful and tasted as if they'd been reheated. Having lived in Japan, maybe I'm too picky? Service was slow and lackluster despite the restaurant being slow. I know everyone loves this spot but I found it disappointing.
Kat, I sent you a private message. We regret you did not have a good time. I will speak with the manager about your service issues and give the chef notes on your food comments. We hope to see you again. Thank you.
I was disappointed that on New Year's Day their main dining room was closed and that we were in a room just off the bar. They explained that they were short of staff but I call that bad planning. The food was very good though.
Tom. thank you for your feedback. I am sorry our main dining room was closed on New Year's Day. There was an inaccurate assumption that we would be slower on New Year's Day due to the holiday. Yes, holidays are a bit harder to staff as well. I am glad you enjoyed the food. Next New Year's Day I know we will be anticipating a busier evening. Please visit us again.
After reserving for their NYE event on Open Table (2 weeks in advance) and also calling them and leaving a message to make sure there was nothing left for me to do to secure a table for me and my daughter for their NYE event, we arrived 15 minutes early on Dec 31 for our 9:15PM reservation , our names were on the reservation list on their computer but after making us wait around for 25 minutes to seat us, the young lady proceeded to inform us the manager told her they were no longer seating for dinner and the kitchen was closed! "Are you serious right now?" She stated they had to get ready for their party and there were many patrons dining still without food! Is this a bad episode of Hell's Kitchen!? Completely unprofessional and on NYE night with no remorse for ruining our entire evening, not even a complimentary cocktail to send us on our way! If I could give 0 stars I would and we will never eat there and we have told all our friends about our experience!
Sylvia, I sent you a private message. Although New Year's Eve at Saucebox is a very busy, crazy night, your reservation should have been honored. What you describe here is outrageous on our part. We are here to serve. We are here to be hospitable. This was wrong. I am truly sorry you had this experience. It will not be happening to anyone in the future. Thank you for speaking up.
