We had a reservation for 8:15. We arrived early and the hostess went to check on our table. She returned and said “it will be a while” with no further explanation. We queried her as to what would be a while and she said that she could not control how fast people eat and that it would be at least another 20-25 minutes. She offered no other alternative. We asked about the upstairs area which seemed to have quite a few open tables. She went upstairs and ended up finding us a table. Although we did want to sit in the dining room, we were happy to be seated.
The waitress for our table was excellent. She took extra time explaining the dishes and specials. She was very generous with making sure our cocktails were to our satisfaction.
We had been to the Saucebox before and had always had a good experience. Overall, it was good but the hostess introduction could have been a little more polite and up front with our wait.
A great place. Can’t say enough good things about it.
The happy hour Saucebox burger was fabulous. Shrimp not so much.
Sooo noisy! But we ended up being seated upstairs and realized on our way out that the lower level on side was much quieter. Also upstairs it was impossible to read menu without phone light. Absolutely no lighting to the point where getting up and down the stairs was actually dangerous.
Super busy, co-workers get together vibe.. meh.. we only got 1 drink in the first hour, took 40 mins to get the server to come back. No one was lazy but it was busy and I’m guessing they were just under staffed. Everyone was friendly. Small portions and kinda spendy for Portland
Two stars for overall rating for the food drinks. We had reservations for 6 people for 6pm. We got to our table around 615, ordered around 630. Food didn’t come out till 8!!! The waiter kept pushing us aside when I asked for an update. He was stand-offish, and when asked for the manager he tried saying he’d like to buy us a round of drinks to make up for the trouble. That was beside the point, we had to leave by 830 so our entire party had to literally box all of our food to go. We’ve been to most of the restaurants downtown and was excited to try Saucebox from reccomendations. Dissapointment to say the least. To make matters worst he still got his 20% tip from our $400 bill, since our party was “6 or more” maybe that was why he pushed us off and did not deliver any sort of service, bc he knew we’d be charged for the 20% regardless.
I liked Saucebox. We went for Happy Hour and I believe its a great value and experience.
We have always enjoyed the food at Saucebox. We wanted to try the Portland March special and was not disappointed. It was refreshing to have something other than salmon for non meat eaters. Everything about the meal was so different than other March specials we have tried in the past at other restaurants. It was great to see the wonderful Brussel Sprout dish we have loved for years. Overall a great meal at a great restaurant
Dinner before a concert, so timing is critical. We did switch tables a couple times (our bad) which wasted some of our time. Drink order came out quickly. The food order, however, did not. Non-sushi plates came out fairly quickly but the sushi roll was lagging. One waiter said our sushi was "right up." Another said "it'll be ready in 5 mins." Literally took 45 mins for one sushi roll. Turns out sushi order was lost; waiter who took our order said "I won't say I didn't put it in." 5 mins before leaving, we asked for our check. The sushi and a free drink appeared with the check, leaving us 3 mins to finish everything before running out the door.
This was not typical of past experiences. May have been short-staffed but don't make up stories about how long it'll be for my sushi...or just admit the order is lost and let's figure out if I still want it.
Went for late night dinner and drinks-noodles were pretty amazing!
Had a great time with friends there. Kat and sam were amazing and so was the food. Our drinks were spot on! We will return
Food was great. A little loud but ok. Creative drinks! Service was really good but a little slow.
Valentine’s Day at Saucebox wasn’t a great experience. Restaurant management saw dollar signs and crammed too many people in all at the same time. The wait time for our drinks and meals was ridiculous bordering on absurd. And when our food finally arrived it was lukewarm. Our waitress apologized multiple times saying “We’re so busy!”. Well, duh, it was VD! Tip to the restaurant. Limit your patrons or staff up so you can do a good job! I won’t be going back.
I made a reservation on valentines day. Although I realize this is a couples occasion for many it isn't for all therefore I didn't think it would be a problem getting happy hour since it was at 5:30. No where online, or over the phone did they specify there was a set $65 per person dining minimum that evening. I felt blind-sided when I was told by the 4th person that spoke to me from the dining staff - why didn't they say this sooner? I would have went somewhere else. I had a potsticker and crab roll for dinner - highly dis-satisfied.
Amazing food! Great selection of drinks. Service was outstanding as well. Would recommended to any and all!
A very limited, 3 course, prefix menu was offered for Valentine’s Day. The starters and main courses were overcooked (not great for the tuna main course) and unremarkable (not much flavor). We ordered decaf coffee with desert which never arrived; afterwards were told they didn’t have any. We were offered complimentary Bubbles that showed up on the final bill; it took three tries at the computer to get it off the bill. Although the tables were only half occupied they appeared to be under staffed. The experience didn’t align with the $223 bill (20% gratuity was automatically added although the service wasn’t in alignment; we almost always tip at 20% but would not have that evening). With so many amazing choices in Portland for dinner we were surprised as Saucebox’s reputation far exceeds the evening we had experienced.
While the bar side of this restaurant is dark and noisy, the restaurant side is beautiful and much quieter. Tables have white table cloths, there are big windows and both the asian-influenced food and the service as excellent. Love that I was able to make a rezzie as we had a show to catch. I let the server know and he was very respectful of our timeline. Recommend and would go again!
Nice waitstaff. Great atmosphere. Food was okay.
Mostly well balanced food (nutrient, taste - not salty, not too sweet, not too oily).
Some foods are salty. Fried rice was dry (maybe cooked long)?
Food was just honestly just okay, staff was amazing though. Music was terrible.
Meh, I'd rather go to bamboo sushi or literally anywhere else for the price.
I made reservations and was called the night before to confirm and give my cc #. The Man on the phone assured me I would have a table for 8 upstairs. When we got there the table was for 2 upstairs then they moved us downstairs to the bar area where we were told we needed to be finished by 10 pm so they could open the dance floor. My reservations were at 830 pm.
I was upset and the manager was clueless about it all.
Really disappointed with the New Year's Eve service. We made our OpenTable reservation earlier in the week then was called the day before our reservation to get our credit card number because they don't want to bear ANY risk that WE don't arrive for the New Year's Service (at 8:15!!). When we arrived on time, they stuck us in the overflow upstairs area then told us that we only have a limited time because the DJ will be setting up in an hour or so on the table next to us. (How does that impact us?). The opentable reservation did not state there was a $70 prix fixe menu for NYE and we were surprised at the very limited selection within the prix fixe menu provided. (Vegan/salmon/steak). The (unalterable) tofu appetizer was ignored by 2 of the 4 of my party. (I thought it was delicious but some ppl won't try tofu and it shouldn't be the ONLY appetizer option in a PRIX FIXE!). The dishes were all beautifully adorned, but we couldn't see them in the badly lit overflow upstairs seating. The cocktails were lovely but I would not have gone with ice filled highball glasses in $12 exotic juice cocktails on new year's, it watered down the celebration in many ways, look, feel and taste. The red bean paste dessert was okay but a bit oily for my taste (3 oily donut-y things were 2 too many), and the dessert should have had a trio of tastes, not a single item x3. As a prix fixe, saucebox needs work. The waitstaff was nice but pushy, we were told twice that "the DJ is setting up now". We were NOT in his way and the reservation did not dictate we leave before we finished eating after paying our $400+ bill for 4 people (yes, they included the tip in the bill for us). If you are going to offer a "nice" dinner, don't dump us with the drinks-only crowd then crowd us out. TRASHY.
New Years Eve dinner. It Was a pretty good place.
Had a horrible experience. I wish I could get my money back since it was a $400 meal. Made reservations NYE and it started out by the waiter telling us that we only have an hour and a half to eat until she had to tell us to go. Then as we were wrapping up and JUST finished dessert, she told us we needed to leave in 10 minutes, mind you, there were 7 open tables upstairs And plenty more downstairs. It was such a disappointment.
We thought the drinks were amazing and the food was very creative, too!
George our server was excellent. Food and speciality cocktails were amazing!
Not one of the cheaper options in Portland, but definitely worth the splurge on a special occasion. Sampled both the dinner and late-night menus- red lantern roll and pork belly shumai off dinner menu were delicious, and the pork noodles off late-night menu were to die for. Great cocktail selection. Our server was friendly, helpful, overall amazing. Great ambience for a fun date night! Will definitely be going back next time we find ourselves downtown with extra money to spend.
Some of the dishes are overly sweet but they're still well made and presented.
We had a great experience celebrating our daughters first bday here! Thank you to the staff for being so attentive and giving us the best service. I recommend trying the salmon oh my god !
We had an amazing time the waiter was just perfect ! Everything went well thank you 🙏🏾
Loved everything we had. Pork Bay, amazing Korean Ribs and duck in curry sauce. Favorite was the ribs, fall off the bone yum and not fatty as ribs can often be. Would go back for sure.
The kitchen was extremly slow. I told my server how hungry I was and ordered the Tuna salad and it was EXTREMLY tiny! I was quite annoyed the server didn't warn me as she knew I was starving. They seemed extremly proud of their food, it was okay.
Sauce box was a big disappointment. We started off with oxtail chow fun, fantastic! As were the house made mango sodas.!I wish I could say the same for the rest. Pork shu mai was passable as were the potstickers, but the dipping sauce for the potstickers was funky and did not compliment them. The spider roll was below average, jasmine rice was WAY over cooked and the kimchi was boring and listless. Portland has many better choices for Asian and Asian inspired food. I would not suggest Saucebox to anyone.
VERY noisy. We could not carry on a conversation in the dining area.
I was quite pleased with the entire dining experience! Having grown up in the Northwest, I have enjoyed wild, fresh salmon for many years. The salmon preparation at Saucebox just might be the best I've ever had. The service was attentive and genuine. Excellent restaurant!
Delicious food - everything we ordered was great! Service outstanding especially from George!
I was very disappointed with the service. The food was good but the staff was not very good. We had them bring our entrees all at different times. We had to wait for the other and food was cold. We also had three different servers bring us food that was not ours. I would never recommend sitting up stairs as you get ignore. sad to spend over $300 for this type of service.
Server was great, food was good, drinks were really fun and tasty. Bar atmosphere was odd. Not sure I'd hang out in t he bar again. The Japanese cartoons on the ceiling were just too much. But again, drinks were fun and interesting, and service was good
Amazing food and drinks! Our waiter George was so fun and very informative with drink and dinner recommendations! We have found a new favorite place!!
Nice place. Chicken wings are the best we have had. Great staff. Little pricey for what you get. But would recommend.
Having dined at Saucebox numerous, over the years, tonight, we were disappointed. Despite making a reservation on Open Table, we were seated near the kitchen in an area the hostess described as "overflow for walk-ins." The dreary ambience reminded us of being seated at the "kids' table" during thanksgiving...with all the wonderful dining options in Portland, it's doubtful we'll return anytime soon.
