I made reservations and was called the night before to confirm and give my cc #. The Man on the phone assured me I would have a table for 8 upstairs. When we got there the table was for 2 upstairs then they moved us downstairs to the bar area where we were told we needed to be finished by 10 pm so they could open the dance floor. My reservations were at 830 pm.
I was upset and the manager was clueless about it all.
Really disappointed with the New Year's Eve service. We made our OpenTable reservation earlier in the week then was called the day before our reservation to get our credit card number because they don't want to bear ANY risk that WE don't arrive for the New Year's Service (at 8:15!!). When we arrived on time, they stuck us in the overflow upstairs area then told us that we only have a limited time because the DJ will be setting up in an hour or so on the table next to us. (How does that impact us?). The opentable reservation did not state there was a $70 prix fixe menu for NYE and we were surprised at the very limited selection within the prix fixe menu provided. (Vegan/salmon/steak). The (unalterable) tofu appetizer was ignored by 2 of the 4 of my party. (I thought it was delicious but some ppl won't try tofu and it shouldn't be the ONLY appetizer option in a PRIX FIXE!). The dishes were all beautifully adorned, but we couldn't see them in the badly lit overflow upstairs seating. The cocktails were lovely but I would not have gone with ice filled highball glasses in $12 exotic juice cocktails on new year's, it watered down the celebration in many ways, look, feel and taste. The red bean paste dessert was okay but a bit oily for my taste (3 oily donut-y things were 2 too many), and the dessert should have had a trio of tastes, not a single item x3. As a prix fixe, saucebox needs work. The waitstaff was nice but pushy, we were told twice that "the DJ is setting up now". We were NOT in his way and the reservation did not dictate we leave before we finished eating after paying our $400+ bill for 4 people (yes, they included the tip in the bill for us). If you are going to offer a "nice" dinner, don't dump us with the drinks-only crowd then crowd us out. TRASHY.
Had a horrible experience. I wish I could get my money back since it was a $400 meal. Made reservations NYE and it started out by the waiter telling us that we only have an hour and a half to eat until she had to tell us to go. Then as we were wrapping up and JUST finished dessert, she told us we needed to leave in 10 minutes, mind you, there were 7 open tables upstairs And plenty more downstairs. It was such a disappointment.
Not one of the cheaper options in Portland, but definitely worth the splurge on a special occasion. Sampled both the dinner and late-night menus- red lantern roll and pork belly shumai off dinner menu were delicious, and the pork noodles off late-night menu were to die for. Great cocktail selection. Our server was friendly, helpful, overall amazing. Great ambience for a fun date night! Will definitely be going back next time we find ourselves downtown with extra money to spend.
Sauce box was a big disappointment. We started off with oxtail chow fun, fantastic! As were the house made mango sodas.!I wish I could say the same for the rest. Pork shu mai was passable as were the potstickers, but the dipping sauce for the potstickers was funky and did not compliment them. The spider roll was below average, jasmine rice was WAY over cooked and the kimchi was boring and listless. Portland has many better choices for Asian and Asian inspired food. I would not suggest Saucebox to anyone.
I was quite pleased with the entire dining experience! Having grown up in the Northwest, I have enjoyed wild, fresh salmon for many years. The salmon preparation at Saucebox just might be the best I've ever had. The service was attentive and genuine. Excellent restaurant!
I was very disappointed with the service. The food was good but the staff was not very good. We had them bring our entrees all at different times. We had to wait for the other and food was cold. We also had three different servers bring us food that was not ours. I would never recommend sitting up stairs as you get ignore. sad to spend over $300 for this type of service.
Having dined at Saucebox numerous, over the years, tonight, we were disappointed. Despite making a reservation on Open Table, we were seated near the kitchen in an area the hostess described as "overflow for walk-ins." The dreary ambience reminded us of being seated at the "kids' table" during thanksgiving...with all the wonderful dining options in Portland, it's doubtful we'll return anytime soon.
My wife and I went there for our 37th wedding anniversary a couple of nights ago. To be honest, I thought it was going to be just another Asian restaurant, but to my surprise, it exceeded my expectations. We ordered the pupu platter and everything on it was fantastic. So much so that we decided we would order appetizers and small bites instead of entrees. We were not disappointed. We took our time and ordered as we went along. Cocktails were also well crafted and imaginative. All in all, a great experience.
Unfortunately a large group had just been seated before we were. It seems they must've backed up the kitchen and overtaxed the waitstaff. Our food was slow in coming, the extra beer had to be requested a second time, and one entree arrived cold. The food was good and the waitstaff courteous, but the wait was annoyingly long.
