The food and service were outstanding, and we especially enjoyed the music playing!
We had a wonderful dinner for two. Our server was gracious and engaging. The shuimai was excellent! I think the crispy Brussel sprouts were my favorite thought.
Came for sushi and the sushi chef was sick. So got no sushi!
We booked with Saucebox because reservations were available through open table, and because they did NOT have a limited Valentine’s Day menu listed (other restaurants were doing limited menus for Valentine’s Day) and we were excited about their full menu.
When we arrived, they did in fact only have a limited 3-course menu available at $65 a person, which was not mentioned at all on their open table listing for that night. I also received a call the night before to confirm the reservation, but the limited menu was not mentioned. We decided to stay because we knew the food was supposed to be really good, and we didn’t have a reservation anywhere else.
The first two courses were tasty, but very small. The main course was good but desperately needed salt. The value for the food was definitely lacking, but at least the dishes tasted good. Our biggest issue, however, was that the courses were spaced out about 45 minutes in between- I’m not sure if this was a server issue or a kitchen issue, but we didn’t even arrive until 8:15 and didn’t receive our entrees until about 9:30, at which point the restaurant was half full. The server seemed to avoid us, rather than addressing the issue, and we were charged $40 for a bottle of wine that was listed on the menu as being $36.
Overall, very unimpressed with the lack of communication regarding this reservation. We really just wanted to share a few plates at the bar top (where our reservation was made for), but instead we were tricked into a $130 dinner (plus drinks) in the dining room.
Came for Valentine’s Day. I’ve been here before, I just wasn’t expecting a 60 dollar prix fixe menu. I am disappointed in that. To find this out, I had to search on the menu tab of the website to find the Valentine’s Day menu. It wasn’t clearly posted on the home page of the website not did it say that was the ONLY offering that day. I just booked through opentable expecting my normally great food and dining experience that I have had there in the past. So I was stuck since it was Valentine’s Day and everything in the city was booked up.
Made reservations for Valentines. No where did it say a special menu for valentines. Unfortunately wasn’t able to experience the full menu. Service was ok not special. Probably will go back. The menu looks to tempting not to go back
Food was good except my Korean ribs was to salty
Food was salty af. Everything else was fine, service, drink, atmosphere, etc. but the food was so salty it burned the roof of my mouth
Our waiter was very friendly and attentive but the food took a LONG time
The kitchen was overloaded...Took a long time to get food....Took 45 min from the time we ordered till it was brought to table....At 40 min asked waiter if it would be much longer and he told us he didn't want to ask because the kitchen staff might eat his head off!
My partner and I just had our first Double Birthday and I booked Saucebox for the occasion. The service here was outstanding as it always is. They have a few mocktails -one of my sober guests was over the moon for the virgin love drop.
This is my favorite place in general and I always drag new people here, I want to specially thank Chee(I believe was her name) for making it extra perfect this visit.
The prices are a bit much but once in a while if you can afford to it’s definitely worth it.
Sexy vibes and seems like everyone at the table already knew about it, even though it's news to me. Loved the Zombie and the fried chicken selections.
Saucebox was so great a year or so when I went last and I had to come back this time around I was in downtown. We were greeted fairly fast, but thee was a line so we waited a bit for seating. Food came quickly and we ordered a lot of their dim sum, then one entree the ribs to share. Drinks came out and were a really zesty, fruity style. I remember there being more 90's clubby music last time, things like Vanderkraft, Crazy P, and whatnot but the music was different this time. It was overall a good experience though! Will be back next biz trip.
Really special place! Looking for sushi, we stumbled across Saucebox and while yes, they did have sushi, they also had some really choice items like fried udon noodles, ribs, etc. A lot for everyone, land or sea. Atmosphere is like a club in New York, so that was different but I think it definitely fit the mood. Music was clubby too but we were there for late night so it was fitting. The whole thing is very not Portland but an enjoyable experience for sure. Something that I would consider special and interesting for sure!
I have always liked Saucebox and this last trip in was pretty nice too. Greeted by the manager almost immediately and a lot of hustle-bustle in the building. Sat and had our favs, the karaage and some sichuan peppercorn steak. Cocktails always add some fun to the table because they are a little tropical, a little tiki, a lot of zazzle. Cool that they ahve been open for so long and still maintain a solidly fun time. We will be back soon, thank you guys!
I love Saucebox and was excited to spend my New Years' Eve there. However, I did not enjoy the pre-fixed menu. I didn't think the quality was all that great, especially for the price that we paid. I actually enjoy their regular menu so much more and wish I could have just had that.
Disappointing, and restrooms out of service, r u kidding!
Great special menu. However the bathroom was not working and we had to go across the way to use the toilet. Otherwise great food and service!
New Years menu. $65 each. Very poor value, uninspired menu. Main meat dish was very salty.
Suggested to come here by the concierge at our hotel and we didn't regret it. Ended up here over the weekend and it was a very busy vibe, a lot of dim sum, dumplings, little oddities that ended up tasting super good. We didn't drink this night, but I remember they did have a lot of delicious options for mocktails! We enjoyed a pina colada-like cocktail IN a coconut without alcohol--which was everyone's favorite. Saucebox is not as traditional as like an XLB or Duckhouse, but still very good. Creative!
Thank you to Tim for a great time in their dining room, walking us through the menu pretty well, and suggesting sake that went well with what we were eating. My Dad is in his 80's and did NOT want to sit in the louder part of the restaurant, so we were very delighted when Tim took us into the white table cloth zone on the left. Each course was well thought out and built an experience for us over the time there. Wish it were warmer because would love to sit outside and watch the chaos of downtown! The people watching on this block is very entertaining :)
Very high energy space! Loving all the tropical vibes and their food was satisfying too. God the veggie udon and some stuff off the pupu platter, which we ordered for the table. Drinks were good, kind of a mix between tiki drinks and sheshe stuff from the old days. I loved the mix! Fun place.
Bad food and bad service all around. salty overcooked food, took forever for drinks,
Asked for a beer list and didn't see one, just paid and left. Never again.
Loved Tim the Server and Mike the Manager. Both had an excellent sense of humor and priority. I will definitely be back.
The food just not great-I asked for my salmon rare to medium and it was overcooked, and the best of spinach was a greasy mess. Jus subpar and expensive.
Nice place with dim lighting and overall pretty good food! Loved the tropical drinks and would definitely be back a little later for a party. Seems like this place could get wild.
I LOVE SAUCEBOX!!! Saucebox has always been the "spot" downtown. Good Asian food, sushi, and tiki drinks. We entered at a busy time but the manager sat us quickly, we ordered quite a few items which all tasted great. Bao buns with Crab, vegetable udon, and ribs. Ribs were fall off the BONE and the veggie Udon was the perfect spice. We sat on the patio but it started to rain, so they found us space inside. Nice of them!
Amazing food. Bar was pretty loud but to be expected. Great service Highly recommend
Thanksgiving menu was a bit overpriced
Appetizer + main course + desert = $45 per person for the special thanksgiving dinner, main course portion is really small, either 3 slices of turkey or a piece of salmon.
My family came here for Thanksgiving dinner, it was absolutely fabulous! Service was professional and attentive, drinks tasty, dinner delicious!
We had a reservation for 3. We were right on time. They took forever seating us. Then seated us at a table for 2. When they realized we had 3 people and we asked for a bigger table they said they didn’t have one. The food wasn’t great and it always is. It was like they really didn’t care about us or our experience. This place went from one of our favorites to now off the list (to add insult to injury, we got an email after our dinner from Open Table punishing us for being a no show and reminding us that it is very important we show up! WE DID!!)
Wonderful food, extensive cocktail lift, attractive space, and reasonable prices! Our only issue was that the green beans that came with my husband’s entree were too spicy for him to eat!
We loved every single dish we ordered. Wonderful food and service.
An “aside” — thank you for better lighting in the bathroom!
Small portions for the price
Comfortable, hip. Particularly awesome food. Friendly service. Next time in Portland I’m there again!
Love this space! Very New York City. Enjoyed their lengthy drinks list and some bites from their happy hour menu. Honestly some great deals here. Nothing over 9 bucks and a heck of a lot of food. Definitely will be back, too cold or I would have sat outside! What a scene out there :)
Another great night with the Saucebox drink list. This time around, we did not have time to eat (were off to Miss Saigon up the street) but the ambiance and bar were enough. Loving the Zombie COcktail and their use of passionfruit! Hard to find in this town. Thanks!
I had a reservation for 2 at 8pm. I was greeted by a kind hostess and seated upstairs. The restaurant was busy and the server politely explained this to me. She was clearly working hard. By 830 however, when my order still hadn’t been taken (food or beverage), I decided to leave.
