Chi was our waitress and was great! We really enjoyed our food and drinks!
Yum! And greet service.
Birthday party went well! Will be back soon :) Really loved the upstairs, looking over the whole space. The server Jenny was super nice! THank you to their manager Mike for putting up with our crazy people! ;)
Great night in the dining room with family. You look at this place and think it's clubby but their fine dining side is very good for a quieter night, older family members, and kids. We all had a great time and the food was awesome! Especially the tapioca dumplings :)
Sexy space and great ambiance! Sat at the bar with the hubby and had a nice time. Enjoyed their Pupu Platter and Karra age. Big drinks and we had a good time with those. Felt like being in New York or something.
I LOVE SAUCEBOX!!! Saucebox has always been the "spot" downtown. Good Asian food, sushi, and tiki drinks. We entered at a busy time but the manager sat us quickly, we ordered quite a few items which all tasted great. Bao buns with Crab, vegetable udon, and ribs. Ribs were fall off the BONE and the veggie Udon was the perfect spice. We sat on the patio but it started to rain, so they found us space inside. Nice of them!
The location was hard to get to. The dumpling were good but the chicken karage wasn’t good at all.
Hi JayM! Thank you for the 4star review! Were you visiting Portland? Portland is full of one way streets. Although we are on the main street going through downtown, Broadway, getting onto the one way can be confusing, especially if you are coming from the other main Street, Burnside. The city is full of these one-ways. GPS can be very helpful. I will talk to the kitchen about the Karrage. It is very popular, like little nuggets of fried chicken. Puzzling. Maybe the seasoning was off. Thank you!
Bachelorette party dinner
Fabulous meal , great service and we did ask a lot of questions! All good recommendations and very good cocktails. Highly recommend
Great food, great music! Love the cocktails! Had the udon and some sushi and everything tasted very good. What happened to the projector?? My favorite memories are the great japanese movies they would play on the ceiling!
We stopped here on a busy Saturday night and sat at the bar. The drinks were very good and we also ordered the Pupu Platter, which was a nice little taste of everything. If we had more time, we would have stuck around a lot longer but needed to catch a show. Thank you Saucebox!
Saucebox has been a staple for me for a long time, I love the innovative cocktails, the not-so-traditional food and the creativity that goes into the space. Everything about our last experience was good!
I felt like the quality of the food nor the quantity warranted such a high price. I also felt that our drinks were weak. Lastly our food came out very slowly.
Hi CoryB, Thank you for the review. We regret you did not enjoy your night. The quality of our ingredients are sound. We use great vendors such as Pacific Seafood and DoubleRRanch. We prep our food daily and it may be there was some variation there. I will discuss with the chef. As far as "drinks were weak" I can assure you that was and is not the case. You get what you pay for and it is priced appropriately so that you do. Depending on the drink, 1.5-2 ounces of alcohol are in each. Thank you.
Fried Rice was good...sushi not so much.
Thank you for your review. We have a new sushi chef! You dined with us prior to his arrival. We apologize for the hiccup in quality. Please visit us again. :)
Made a reservation for a business dinner. Our waiter was fantastic - he was personable, funny, and helpful. However, the hostess who sat us was just plain rude. When we walked in, she simply pointed at place for us to wait and told us she'd be back. We had a friend who was already at the bar, but when we walked in that direction, she corrected us abruptly and pointed us back to where she'd initially indicated. Then she sat us at a table that had two chairs and one bench, and I asked if we could have a table that had four chairs (we had two people in our party who have back issues and I wasn't sure about the others but wanted to be safe. She told me she was sorry, but that the entire restaurant was booked. It was practically empty. I must have looked at her questioningly because she spat, "I know it doesn't look like it, but it is." I don't remember a specific table being associated with my reservation, so I'm not sure how that one became assigned to my party. Food was good, but somewhat sparse for the prices. Drink list is great - really creative. Bummer that we had such a disappointing start to our evening.
HI Dana! We are so sorry you had this experience. I will look into the issues you've relayed (as well as the off-putting door person) and correct them. We hope you will give us another try. Thank you.
Reservations on a Sunday evening are certainly not needed as we were the ONLY customers in the dining room. Some of the dishes were very good, and others were disappointing like the kung pao shrimp was too sweet. Drinks are good. The rolls were good as well as the buns.
Hello, Thank you for the feedback. We will revisit the Kung Pao shrimp dish. We hope to gain another star at your next visit. Have a great week!
A long list of Happy Hour options and a great cocktail menu. I made a reservation at their opening time so it was pretty quiet for the first 30 minutes. As I left the restaurant started to fill up and the crowd was all over the place ( mix of older and younger, families and co-worker groups). All in all tasty pan asian food and fun cocktails at a competitive price point.
Saucebox is known for their bar food and cocktails, but don't forget to have a meal in the dining room. The food is very very good, and it's also a very good value. The sushi is lovely.
Would have been higher, if not for a hair in the curry dish.
Anonymous, Thank you for the 4 stars and your grace. I hope the staff handled that well for you. That is definitely not appetizing. I will ask about this. Someone needed to wear their hair up or wear a hair net! It can happen even with the best of practices and fortunately this happens rarely at Saucebox. We hope to see you again and thank you for being understanding.
Our waiter was fantastic, food was wonderful...from drinks to appetizers to entrees. My husband and I are in Portland visiting our kids so we wanted to have a special dinner....and it definitely was😊
Waitress was nice, but kept getting our orders wrong. Our cocktails tasted quite watered-down, which is not something that I’ve ever run across before. Kids’ virgin cocktails were worse, so poorly balanced that the drinks were super sour.
The food quality was mixed, ranging from unmemorable to inedible. Music was also a bit on the loud side. This place is a pass.
Dear Anonymous, We apologize you did not have a good time with us. We will look into your critique and address all to hopefully see you again for an improved experience. We do not "water down" our drinks and although the kitchen could have been having an off night, the majority of our feedback on drinks, food and service match our overall rating of over 4 stars and higher. We regret we did not deliver that to you on your last visit. We will live up to our overall rating upon your next visit.
Noisy in the bar, but quiet in the restaurant. Had great waiter. Loved what we ordered, sushi and Korean ribs with rice and vegetable. Pleasant atmosphere. Will go again.
Bonnie, Thank you for your feedback! We are happy to have been able to offer you a little bit of both in the atmosphere department. We hope to have you back again soon! -BCR
Loved the pork udon and bao. Cocktails were great (I had poolside with David hasselhoff). Serving portions were pretty generous for “small plates.”
Tim our Korean waiter was great, food was ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggGgggggggggggreat
Great food. Awesome service. All the servers look like models and they are amazing and helpful. The food was delicious and prepared well.
The noise level was extreme through no fault of the restaurant. I believe the bridal shower party next to us was out of control. The shrill blast of spew from the bimbos inhabiting half of the upstairs put a damper on any conversation. Perhaps a party room for these types of groups would be something to consider.
Corey is One of the best bartenders in Portland! But when he left the service was terrible.
We've dined at Saucebox maybe 6 times in the last five years. The food is always inventive, tasty and elegantly presented (and the drink menu is amazing!) and we're fortunate to always have the same waiter, Tim, in the dining room. He's professional, customer-focused and always charming. Last night, however, we had our first bad experience there. We ordered drinks, a sushi roll and 3 small plates, intending to order entrees later. It took almost 90 minutes to receive those four dishes - each arrived slowly, with a very long gap in between. And the last thing to be delivered was an order of salad rolls - they don't even require cooking. Tim was very apologetic and explained that there were only 4 people working in the kitchen! It was a Saturday night on a holiday weekend! So much of the menu is hand prepared (like sushi rolls) that I'd think you'd need 4 just for that task. We opted not to order entrees because of such a delay and came home and ate. :-( Tim compted half our check, which was kind of him and I feel bad for the wait staff who had to explain to all the customers why food was so painfully slow in delivery.
I really hope the management addresses this situation, or that it was just a fluke. We like this restaurant and it has been very successful for many years. I'd recommend it with an asterisk, and maybe you should ask how many cooks are working before you make a reservation!
Tim is a PRO. Great meal. Thanks very much. G&G
This place was recommended to me by a colleague, and it was a great recommendation. This place had great drinks and very tasty food. We had the pupu platter and a couple of the sushi rolls. It was all so good. The Korean ribs were my favorite and my partner loved the tapioca dumpling. This place is expensive but it should be expected. They take reservations but it wasn’t packed when we got there.
Good size portions and dishes were deliciously prepared. Low lighting. Had to use phone's flashlight to read the menu!
Very nice restaurant, but the only negative I have was that the table was very dark.
Tim, the waiter, is the absolute best! Super fun place to eat and drink with a savvy/cool vibe.
First, we were accosted by some irrational man living in his car parked around the corner of the restaurant. But we were nicely greeted when we entered the restaurant and led upstairs. Service was quick and attentive. We both ordered from the Prix Fixe menu. My wife had curry and I had the Korean ribs. We were both disappointed. The curry was watery, with uncooked carrots and limp flavor. And I've never had such salty ribs. I must have drunk five glasses of water. The rice was cool, dry and crunchy. Was it last week's rice? I wondered. The noise is beyond 'energetic.' At times, I couldn't hear my wife speak.
Given the combative street people lingering (living) around the restaurant and the lousy food, we won't be going back. We actively discourage any and all not to frequent.
We happen to be in town for Taste of Portland and were pleased to see Sauce Box was offering a Special Pre-Fix menu.
Overall I was pleased with the food and service.
Beautiful space too.
It made for a great way to celebrate my birthday.
Great food, but awfully slow service on a busy night, and quite noisy so probably not the best place to take a date to if you want to hear each other. I would still like to check this place again maybe on a weekday primarily because of the interesting dishes.
Saucabox is always fun. Every dish on the menu is delicious. Tim is a great waiter.
Amazing service and a great deal for Portland Dining Month!
Thank you MEGHANM!
Great date night spot but also great spot in general. Pupu platter is a must.
Thank you Anonymous!
Fun for celebrating.
