Great, solid American food done up nicely, in a quiet, pleasant place with attentive (not overbearing) service. My martini was cold (nice presentation), and the mini-meatloaf appetizer was a standout (4 pieces, wrapped in bacon, sitting on a dollop of mashed potatoes). My fish dish was cooked perfectly (with asparagus and mashed potatoes), and the beef stroganoff was appropriately rich and hearty. Only suggestion: I miss the steak for 2 (used to be served sliced thin on a long serving dish)...I don't know why this place isn't packed all the time...
6 people different items and we all enjoyed it. Great desserts. It was quiet enough for us to have a conversation but not a quietly, stiff place.
Brought a large group for an early supper. Service was great! Food was DELICIOUS!!! There were 12 of us, and everyone LOVED their entrée! A few tried the Salmon, some the Fish -- I had the Stroganoff (WOW!!!) Try the Mushroom Fries -- such a delicacy! Located just a couple of blocks away from War Memorial. Quaint, charming, and GREAT FOOD!!!

The deep fried lobster wontons were luscious and the Brussels sprouts salad inspired.
BEST chocolate dessert (warm choc brownie) I've had in a long time!
Plus, a great Negroni - I tend to avoid "craft" cocktails. They can be weird.
Overall just a wonderful experience! Food is always superb. Was greeted upon entrance. Waitress was amazing. Had the special which was the ribeye. Just amazing!
Great food for a reasonable price. Very welcoming. Small plates exceptional for a group. Go to place for late night after a show! Or a date night! Excellent!
For the price the food was just ok. Service was great. Have had better food there in previous visits. Not sure I would or would not recommend.

It’s unfortunate because I’ve been a Sauce fan for years and have even held by 30th bday here, 7 years ago. Tonight seems really low energy with small turnout. Combine that with many of the favorites missing from the menu, it just hum drum.
I do not have any real fault to find, other than the fact that my overall satisfaction just was not that high.
This restaurant is good but not great. Convenient to the Civic Center/Symphony Hall area and good for pre-concert dinner. The menu is very limited. The chef is trying to be too creative and does not include enough basic items. The food is rather bland, but like a lot of restaurants they are trying to appeal to the lowest level of taste to bring in more diners with "creativity". But the good result is a quiet, sometimes half filled dining room so it's comfortable. The service is very good and attentive, but the place is obviously trying to figure out what it wants to be from a food standpoint rather than just copy everyone else.
We went there before going to SF Jazz. The food was very good, though the selections were few. Our server was excellent.
We like Sauce for it's fresh and interesting menu items, clean environment, and vegetarian options. However, this last time that option was disappointing. We were very interested in experiencing the "impossible" meat alternative which we have read about, but aren't able to purchase in retain stores. Unfortunately, this meat alternative was almost impossible to sample, as it was so incorporated into the tomato sauce and zucchini "pasta." Altogether, it was a tasty enough meal, but certainly nothing worth the price tag, and nothing better than I might have thrown together at home. Sorry that this meat alternative wasn't better highlighted, or recognizable.
This disappointment won't, however, stop up from going back in the future.
Mediocre food, good service, but rushed even though we were not going to an event. The ant in the drink did not help. Yuk.
Have been here at least 1/2 dozen times before a Symphony performance. Did not care for the new menu. Better choices before, e. g. sliders, salmon entre. Had crab cakes starter for $18.99 which were two tiny thin crab cakes no larger than a half dollar coin served with a few greens. Totally overpriced. Probably won't be back.
This is one of my favorite places in SF. The food is great with many bistro/pub style selections, entrees, etc. They have a great bar and the best staff. The atmosphere is friendly and low key. Very convenient location too.
Excellent food, but overpriced. Excellent service. Quiet atmosphere. Be prepared for a expensive meal than mayi have been anticipated.
I had the shrimp, kale and grits - all very good. Also, the complimentary bread was especially good.
The Sauce-Gough team clicks on all cylinders. In all the years of eating here, it has been spot-on perfect, from food to friendliness of the staff. THANKS SAUCE-GOUGH!!!
This is our new go to place for before the symphony. Very nice staff, terrific food, reasonably priced. A gem of a restaurant in a safe nad comfortable neighborhood. Healthy walk to Davies Symphony Hall, but that's perfect for an after-dinner wake up! Loved the wild boar pasta, the brussell sprouts leaf salad, and the chicken cutlet. S'mores are delish for dessert - get two orders!
first time at Sauce:Gough. caught an earlier dinner prior to performance at Orpheum and timing, service made for an easy exit. Expected a little more from the Mac&Cheese, and should have opted for the bacon wrapped mini meatloaf, but thought the Vegetarian Strudel was just fantastic (high praise coming from a carnivore).

It is hard to find good vegetarian alternatives in a lot of restaurants serving the pre concert crowd around Hayes Valley/Civic Center. Sauce has a wonderful vegetables in filo dough menu item, as well as great salad options. Perhaps some other items could be served sans bacon, or the like. Will definitely go back.
Definitely not what it used to be. Food was not exciting and bland. For the same price I could have had a far better meal at a number of other restaurants in the vecinity. Just okay overpriced (as opposed to expensive) food with outdated surroundings which feel like a chain hotel diner is not a good dining experience.
First Date somehow lasted 4 hrs and never once did the staff try to rush us out. Made a great first date even better

My sister and I have been going to Sauce before symphony concerts once every year or two for quite a few years. It seems to both of us that the menu has become more limited over the years, without much sense of choice available. Our food was good, not great. Noise level was high, and we had trouble hearing each other (keep in mind that neither of us has as acute hearing as we once did). Our server was lovely.
We were going to the Symphony & wanted to try Sauce. Fantastic! They understand people needing to get done in time for the show, the food was hearty & delicious& the waitress couldn’t have been better. We had the broccoli leaves salad, the Cesar, chicken Parmesan & mini meatloaf. Incredible!! And tater tots are divine!
Another pre-performance dinner at Sauce, where the modern takes on American comfort food stand out. The restaurant got very packed but the service never let up; the tater tots, beet salad, salmon and chicken were all wonderful; interesting wine list. Great desserts. Wonderful to have in the neighborhood and great pre-post performance option.
A favorite for late night dining, 10 PM dinner. Cozy neighborhood feel. We splurged on ribeye for two. Extremely tasty, cut in strips, smothered in button mushrooms. Sides also excellent, tender asparagus cooked lightly and cheddar mashed potatoes. Cline wine, a red blend, not my favorite and pricey. I've had much better Cline estate wines, much heavier and richer. Service attentive without being obtrusive.
Nice environment for a special night out. The service was good, but know that if you're going to see a nearby show or performance that you should plan for over an hour for meal time. The food was very good quality, but I would say the portions are definitely on the smaller side.
Small plates interesting and excellent
We arrived for our reservation on time and were showed to the back room, which is dark and gloomy. We've always sat in front, which is light and airy, and I asked to be seated there. I was told, not especially politely, that all the tables were already reserved for parties of four. Having dined there on numerous occasions at a table for two, I think that wasn't true. And on leaving, the front room wasn't full and the table for two where we usually sit was empty. Lastly, if you want salt and/or pepper, you have to ask for it. It seems a bit presumptuous to assume the food is always perfect as served so no salt or pepper is on the table. There are too many other good restaurants in the area now to have to deal with "attitude" even if the food is good.
Restaurant week special $40 menu. Pot roast was outstanding; best I ever had in a restaurant. Ceasar salad very good. topped off with brownie and port for dessert. Very good experience.
Our waiter was a space cadet. No bread to start. Had to ask. Brought the soup, but no spoon. By the time he got around to bringing the spoon, the soup was cold. He tried to sell us dessert, forgetting that the meal was prix fix and dessert was included. Not a good experience.
Went here for SF restaurant week. Don't pay any mind to the Yelp reviews. People we're just overly critical!
I had been wanting to try this restaurant for some time. The food was delicious. I would certainly eat there again. It was cozy and and enjoyable, though the group of 6 next to us was quite loud.
Went to Sauce for a work dinner. Twelve people. Perfect service. Very good food. Everybody was happy with their meal. Everybody said they would go back to the restaurant again.
We came here for our friends 70th birthday celebration and to see Chris Botti after. The restaurant was convenient to the SF Jazz location so we picked Sauce. I had specifically noted that we were celebrating our friends 70th birthday on the reservation but there nothing was done for him, no acknowledement at all.
The waitress was rushed, not friendly and only did the basics, bringing food out.
We brought our own bottle of wine, which we ended up opening ourselves since the wait was so long, waitress finally brought out wine glasses, but that's it, we poured the wine ourselves.
Salmon was overcooked, but after waiting so lone, we didn't send it back, 3 out of the six of us got the salmon and they were all over cooked. We also specifically asked about the salmon before we ordered it, very disappointing, will not go back
