We were seated in the back room and it was great for conversation. We enjoyed the small plates/appetizers the best. The bread was delicious! Service was fine overall, but it took a bit longer to get our entree (we split the vegetable strudel). The wine (Oregon pinot noir) was delightful. This was a great spot for our pre-concert meal.
I have heard great things about Sauce and have always wanted to try it. Recently Sauce was ranked "Best of SF" for their Service...This was the reason I went for my birthday along with showcasing the Best of SF to my visiting family and dearest friends.
I was EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with the service, from the bar tenders to the wait staff. The server seemed annoyed and upset that we were spending money on bottles of wine and sharing dishes. She hardly brought glassware to the table and barely knew what ingredients were in dishes (Shouldn't you know what kind of cheese is in the mac & cheese?).
The bartenders were completely rude to everyone in the party. They refused to submit our entries into a drawing for guessing their pumpkins weight. What a fun way to get patrons involved with your venue.
Overall, I was really disappointed. Sorry Sauce, your staff was way too saucy for me.
Pre-theater dinner at Sauce. It was a night where there was a very large party, so it was louder than I think is standard for this place. It's a small restaurant and would likely be a nice place for a quiet dinner with friends. As it was, it was still lovely (even though waiter mis-heard our order, but what we ended up getting was perfectly nice) and I would recommend for theater-goers in SF.
I hadn't been here in quite a while because the old menu wasn't appealing for me. That said, I ate with five friends the other night. Three friends raved over the vegetarian strudel, my husband enjoyed his chicken parmagian and I really enjoyed my salmon. Special note, I ordered the salmon very rare and it was delivered medium. I showed the waiter and he said no problem. They had a perfectly seared salmon to me in less than 5 minutes. Everyone dug into our desserts. Also, had nice selection of wines by glass and bottle.
Sauce never disappoints. My husband and I started with the carpaccio each, which was very good and attractively served. He had the vegetarian streudle, which he said was outstanding, and we finished with the smash ice cream_______home made chocolate drenched in whiskey. Outstanding!
Sauce is a nice, reliable restaurant for friends, pre-theater, tasty but not extraordinary food. Service is good and staff are agreeable. It is not too expensive. I believe they serve up to midnight, but I have never gone that late. After 6 weekdays and 8 Saturday, there is street parking.
Enjoyed the food and the service was attentive but not overbearing. The menu is not huge but had enough choices to satisfy all four of us. The specials were not that interesting that evening (a 20 oz ribeye?). The (boneless) chicken parm had a nice bit of crisp on it despite being oven baked. The veggie side was overly dressed with a vinaigrette - I couldn't eat much of it. We had time and appetite for dessert. Two of us split the PB&J, presumable a signature dish, and glad we split it. It was an interesting take with sponge cake and ice cream, nicely presented. All in all a nice evening and a reasonable value.
Excellent food, strange service. Not very crowded, but the waitress asked the same question several times, forgot orders, and walked by the table a couple of times without even looking at us, while we were trying to get her attention. Not rude, just mildly careless.
But, really great food.
We had an amazing experience here this week. Started with some drinks - enjoyed my cucumber and basil gimlet. Friends had mojitos and Manhattans. All were refreshing. Enjoyed the roasted corn and tomato salad and the quinoa and kale salad. Dinner entrees were extremely flavorful - all the items on each dish had their own great flavor. Truly enjoyed them. Two of us had the chicken parmesan, others had the short rip potroast and the special ribeye. The staff couldn't have been friendlier. Very attentive. We also had a bottle of the Mt. Veeder cab at a very reasonable price. Didn't feel like they were gouging you on the wines. Really enjoyed and will definitely go back again.
Sauce was a real disappointment. When we walked in the restaurant, we were immediately confronted with the smell of the deep fryer from the kitchen. The food was indifferent and in some cases unappetizing. I'm sorry we wasted a Saturday night dinner with the family at this restaurant.
I have been to Sauce many times pre- SFJAZZ Shows with friends and I always give myself 2 hours of time. Normally the service is very responsive and the kitchen is quick thus usually doing a 2 to 3 course dinner in 90 mins. However, this experience was once of my worst. The service was both slow and inexperienced and the kitchen was very slow. we waited for 45 mins to get our 2nd course thus making us eat in 10 mins to get out in just enough time to get to the show at SFJAZZ.
Too bad, it was a great go to place for good food, fast and together service and a back of the house that moved the process along quickly. Won't be back for awhile
Had a great meal. I've been to their other location but picked this for a birthday dinner after a show at the Orpheum. The food was as great as I remembered and besides a small snafu with our appetizer which was quickly rectified, our server was fantastic. Would definitely recommend.
Very prompt and attentive service from a very helpful gentleman. . We loved the choices on the menu and were tempted, but went with the meal for two: 20 ounces of thinly sliced ribeye accompanied by homemade cheesy mash potatoes . The asparagus spears were cooked perfectly and the potatoes were wonderful with or without the tasty au jus dribbled on top.. The steak was tender and delicious and went well with the side dishes. To complete the meal we started with clever homemade tater tots. Loved them, but forgot we switched to a dinner with potatoes. It was hard to choose from the starter list and we would have loved to try out something else. All the soups on the menu sounded wonderful,--especiallythe clam chowder loaded with more than just clams-- but we couldn't resist sharing the beet salad. The browny sundae was a great addition for dessert, though the ice cream could have been richer. We took leftover everything home to enjoy the next day. Yum!
We went to this place for a late night dinner. The place was low lit and very romantic. But the food was the highlight. My husband ordered the steak and I ordered the chicken parm. Every bite was followed by a "mmmmm" So delicious. Great attentive service as well. We loved it here.

Have to mention the wait staff is great, especially Lynn, whom we had on Saturday,
and she was fantastic. Knew the Menu, and described it to us in detail.
We thought she was very efficient, and seemed to be able to wait on the entire room with no problems.
We did miss our former Waiter, Dan Rick, sorry we did not get there just before he left, but
did see him in late May.
It was my friend's and my first experience at Sauce. We LOVED it, and are both sort of snobby re: food and service. Our waitress, Nicole, was ADORABLE, genuine, prompt, and warm. Loved her suggestions and takes on the various offerings. I wish we hadn't been in a hurry to get to the theater. I would've loved to luxuriate in the food more. Can't wait to go back. My ONLY slightly negative comment is we both wished they had classic martini glasses for the VERY good martinis. Serving a martini in a compote type glass just takes away from the whole "martini experience", so much of which is the elegant glass. Hope they can fit a few of those in their bars in the future. I'm definitely GOING BACK!!!!! LOVED the mini chicken pot pies, the carpaccio, the portobello fries and beet salad. Oh, and the homemade bread! Divine! Go!!!!!!!!!!
