Sauce: Gough Ratings and Reviews
Definitely not what it used to be. Food was not exciting and bland. For the same price I could have had a far better meal at a number of other restaurants in the vecinity. Just okay overpriced (as opposed to expensive) food with outdated surroundings which feel like a chain hotel diner is not a good dining experience.
My sister and I have been going to Sauce before symphony concerts once every year or two for quite a few years. It seems to both of us that the menu has become more limited over the years, without much sense of choice available. Our food was good, not great. Noise level was high, and we had trouble hearing each other (keep in mind that neither of us has as acute hearing as we once did). Our server was lovely.
We were going to the Symphony & wanted to try Sauce. Fantastic! They understand people needing to get done in time for the show, the food was hearty & delicious& the waitress couldn’t have been better. We had the broccoli leaves salad, the Cesar, chicken Parmesan & mini meatloaf. Incredible!! And tater tots are divine!
Another pre-performance dinner at Sauce, where the modern takes on American comfort food stand out. The restaurant got very packed but the service never let up; the tater tots, beet salad, salmon and chicken were all wonderful; interesting wine list. Great desserts. Wonderful to have in the neighborhood and great pre-post performance option.
A favorite for late night dining, 10 PM dinner. Cozy neighborhood feel. We splurged on ribeye for two. Extremely tasty, cut in strips, smothered in button mushrooms. Sides also excellent, tender asparagus cooked lightly and cheddar mashed potatoes. Cline wine, a red blend, not my favorite and pricey. I've had much better Cline estate wines, much heavier and richer. Service attentive without being obtrusive.
Nice environment for a special night out. The service was good, but know that if you're going to see a nearby show or performance that you should plan for over an hour for meal time. The food was very good quality, but I would say the portions are definitely on the smaller side.
We arrived for our reservation on time and were showed to the back room, which is dark and gloomy. We've always sat in front, which is light and airy, and I asked to be seated there. I was told, not especially politely, that all the tables were already reserved for parties of four. Having dined there on numerous occasions at a table for two, I think that wasn't true. And on leaving, the front room wasn't full and the table for two where we usually sit was empty. Lastly, if you want salt and/or pepper, you have to ask for it. It seems a bit presumptuous to assume the food is always perfect as served so no salt or pepper is on the table. There are too many other good restaurants in the area now to have to deal with "attitude" even if the food is good.
Our waiter was a space cadet. No bread to start. Had to ask. Brought the soup, but no spoon. By the time he got around to bringing the spoon, the soup was cold. He tried to sell us dessert, forgetting that the meal was prix fix and dessert was included. Not a good experience.
We came here for our friends 70th birthday celebration and to see Chris Botti after. The restaurant was convenient to the SF Jazz location so we picked Sauce. I had specifically noted that we were celebrating our friends 70th birthday on the reservation but there nothing was done for him, no acknowledement at all.
The waitress was rushed, not friendly and only did the basics, bringing food out.
We brought our own bottle of wine, which we ended up opening ourselves since the wait was so long, waitress finally brought out wine glasses, but that's it, we poured the wine ourselves.
Salmon was overcooked, but after waiting so lone, we didn't send it back, 3 out of the six of us got the salmon and they were all over cooked. We also specifically asked about the salmon before we ordered it, very disappointing, will not go back
Items on the special New Years Eve menu were unsatisfactory in quality! Sand in my partner's cioppino made it barely edible. Fortunately our waiter comped it. The special dessert was almost entirely whipped cream and candy garnish, with less than a teaspoon of the featured chocolate pudding. On the positive side, the vegetarian strudel (a la carte) did live up to its billing. But overall, it was a very disappointing start to our evening...
We went to Sauce on a date night before a concert and loved our experience! We sat in a cozy table by the window which was perfect, because we could chat in peace but the ambient noise was just enough. We ordered the vegetarian pot pie, Brussels sprouts salad, mac & cheese, and pb&j cake and it was all spectacular! The flavors really complemented each other (the sauce on the pot pie was to die for) and best described as comfort food with a kick. Here’s to many happy return trips!
Highly recommended. The majority of our party couldn't make the reservation due to traffic. The two who made it were treated warmly. They were moved to a table of two, had a wonderful meal, and met us at the theatre on time. Can't wait to get back into the city and try again
From the tomato bisque to the excellent deviled eggs - garnished with a knob of maple bacon - every element of our meal was exceptional. We were a party of 5, including 2 vegetarians, and we were all quite satisfied. Plates were lovely and portions were close to perfect.
We look forward to coming back for the bowl of bacon, to explore the desseet menu, and to be served by a staff that is efficient, joyous and most helpful.
We have eaten here before and was excited to return to Sauce because of our previous good experience. This time, however, it wasn't. The service was minimal to poor. The waiter was curt and seemed to want to get away from our table as soon as possible, sometimes doing so before we even had a chance to ask him a question. Two of us had the short ribs pot roast. The meat, which should have been able to be cut with a fork in that kind of dish, was extremely tough. I mentioned that to waiter and pointed out the woman at the adjourning table left most of it over because it was tough, but he mumbled a few words and rushed off again. Sorry, but we will never eat here again.
The food at sauce was excellent. I had forgoten also, how affordable their wine list is which made things even better. The manager of Sauce was very nice and helpful as i went there for a special occasion. Our waiter may have been a little upset as it took us time to order. Also, the manager is very aware of the fact that you could be going to a show nearby and completely interested in accomodating your needs.
The food was excellent, I had the some beef stew we tasted both the chicken and the vegeterian dishes. The devil eggs with bacon were excellent too.
It looked like a good place to go for dinner with your kids before a show, less hype than other restaurand nearby.
I've eaten @ Sauce twice now in 2 weeks so I was able to really examine the offerings. The one thing that I'd suggest could be improved upon was the beet salad. On my first visit I ordered the Brussel sprout salad, which was great. I noticed that the beet salad had a nice slice of Humboldt bay type cheese on it, so on my 2nd visit I ordered the beet salad. But darn, no yummy cheese - only some shredded something on it. The Salmon was consistently great each time as was the Rib-Eye special. Loved the mushroom fries :) Lovely waiters & the corkage is nicely reasonable @ $15 (much appreciated!). No time for dessert (off to the theatre!)
I arrived a few minutes earlier than my friend. The maitre d' quickly offered me the choice of having a drink at the bar or waiting at the table. Such is not always the case in this town. (Later, hHis "thank you" and "have a good evening" was equally gracious.)
That greeting set the ambiance for an easy dining experience. Service was a little haphazard, eg, someone brought out a salad and an entree at the same time, clearly confused because we had said we'd share dishes pre--theatre. A second round of drinks went unfilled until a glass was held in the air to catch the server's eye. So, the flow of the service didn't match the tasty character of all dishes served: deviled eggs w bacon, Caesar salad, pot roast, and S'more dessert). Still, it wasn't enough to deter me from returning to this well-situated restaurant, for performing arts activities along Van Ness Ave/Civic Center.
I have been coming here since it opened. I always have great service. The food is always well prepared. They have an interesting cocktail menu. They have a hotel above them too. Great place for a small or large table. They have a second great location down town as well.
All the food was very good. Salmon was tasty and moist. New England Clam Chowder was smokey and buttery. Salads crisp and refreshing. Chicken Parm - I great update on a classic. Our server disappeared. She wouldn't tell us the specials until the sixth person in our party arrived. She rolled her eyes at us. Despite telling her we have concert tickets, she disappeared resulting in us flagging down another waiter to get our check. She never returned to the table. Awful experience! The food will have me back one more time, but if there is another experience like this - never again.
We dine at Sauce frequently, especially before
attending concerts. We like the variety
of plates and portions, the changing salad
offerings, and are invariably satisfied with
our selections. Lately, we were particularly
impressed with the brussels sprouts salad.
And the desserts are always scrumptious.
Sauce is truly a neighborhood gem.
