Puerto Rican
Chef José Santaella has trained with some of the best chefs in the world, including Ferrán Adriá, Eric Ripert, and Gary Danko. His apprenticeships and successful catering career paved the way for Santaella, his signature restaurant in Santurce's La Placita Marketplace. The decor is rustic yet elegant, with exposed walls, Edison light fixtures, an interior garden, and a sparkling bar. Chef Santaella fuses local and international ingredients to perfectly execute Puerto Rican nouvelle cuisine. The menu is dominated by tapas, which you can easily make into a meal. Favorites include the ahi tuna skewers, goat cheese quesadilla, 'alcapurrias' topped with crab, and foie gras terrine with fruit jelly . The cocktail bar is one of the best on the island, so don't leave without trying one of the concoctions by Santaella's mixologists. -Fodors

We were never seated. The standing room area at the host’s podium became so crowded during our 30minute wait that we eventually stepped outside and waited in the rain. 40mins past our reservation we finally just left. Inexplicable. No one was sat in the 40mins we waited and there were empty tables.

After spending a week in Puerto Rico and having far better food; I woudn't come back to Santaella. The food was just OK. I had the brussel sprout salad that was drowning in balasamic and a filet that was simply prepared and over-salted. My friend had the goat cheese quesadilla which was OK but nothing to writew home about. I don't understand the buzz behind this place. Niche & Marmalade are 10x better on food, service and ambience.

By far our best meal of our stay in PR - was early for our reservation so we sat at the bar for a cocktail first - which I highly recommend! From start to finish, the entire staff was welcoming and on top of every detail. We’ll be back!

Everything about this restaurant was spectacular. My only regret is that it isn’t located in New York so I can easily visit again soon.

Excellent food, service and ambiance! I have been to Santaella at least 5 times over the past few years and it is always delicious. Some restaurants seem to slip after becoming so popular and being written up in the NY times, this one is as amazing as ever!

From our arrival to our departure everything was brilliant! We were seated right away, and our bartender, Pedro was very attentive. The vibe was electric with a restaurant full of happy guests enjoying great food and company. I highly recommend this for a special occasion, a fun girls night out guys night out.

Thank you for your review. Next time please do not arrive almost 45 minutes before your reservation time on a Friday night which is our busiest night if you don't want to wait. Our records show you had a 9:30pm "bar seating" reservation but decided to arrive at 8:56pm. We had "pleneros" that night, yes they were loud but only for a short period of time.

Overpriced and poor service. Our server disappeared for about 20 minutes because allegedly was looking for bottle of wine for another table, neglecting the other tables he was serving. If you want to be pricey, at least have a service to back it up.

Thank you for your review. You spent $406.99 in 3 hours for a party of 8; we find that a bargain at $50 per person! As per the service, we are always looking to improve and have taken steps to make your server work better.

The menu is diverse and the food delicious! We loved everything from fried “Asian” calamari, trifungo, and Brussel sprout salad to start followed my a perfect filet and the best sea bass we’ve ever had. The servers teamed to be very attentive, but it took a while for our server to come back and take our main course order so there was a bit if a lag in the meal between apps and dinner.

Superb!

Do yourself a favor and please order the goat cheese quesadilla served with an arugula salad on top. Perfectly delicious comfort food. Chef Santaella’s creative genius is out of this world. Mike & Johnny at the bar make the best cocktalis in Puerto Rico, hands down. The ambience from the music to the decor to the lighting. It was perfectly beautiful.

We have really enjoyed coming here. Santaella has excellent craft cocktails and the food is amazing. Think we’ve tried everything on the menu and we’re particularly fond of the pork shank and the whole red snapper. Their empandillas are always really good too. The whole menu is infused with traditional Puerto Rican flavors. After dinner you can even venture out and take in the sights and sounds of la placita.

Perfectly paced dinner for 8... we were seated right away after arriving 15 minutes early for our 8 PM reservation. Drink orders were taken, and it was worth trying different cocktails, all were inventive and delicious, incorporating Caribbean fruits and flavors. First course orders were next, and these arrived a bit afterwards. They showcase traditional Puerto Rican food with a modern twist. Main course orders were not taken until the first course had arrived. We enjoyed the 3 hours at the restaurant and never felt rushed (or hungry). We had time to savor our drinks and dinner, as one should. Mostly a smartly dressed crowd, of all ages, a mix of locals and tourists. The dining room is beautiful with traditional and modern touches. Background music was well chosen, lively but not crazy loud... decibel level was high, as it was, but we were able to chat, and it all contributed to the festive atmosphere. Overall, we had a wonderful evening. Kudos.
