Chef José Santaella has trained with some of the best chefs in the world, including Ferrán Adriá, Eric Ripert, and Gary Danko. His apprenticeships and successful catering career paved the way for Santaella, his signature restaurant in Santurce's La Placita Marketplace. The decor is rustic yet elegant, with exposed walls, Edison light fixtures, an interior garden, and a sparkling bar. Chef Santaella fuses local and international ingredients to perfectly execute Puerto Rican nouvelle cuisine. The menu is dominated by tapas, which you can easily make into a meal. The only thing I would say is that the fish was a little bit salty. The combination with the sweet mash was ok, bit alone it felt too Salty.

My girlfriends and I came here to celebrate a birthday on the recommendation of our Airbnb host and it was amazing!!!! Loved everything about it. We all had the sea bass which melted in our mouths! We will definitely come back the next time we are I PR

Great overall experience! From food to service! The manager Jaime and Chef Rafa were very attentive. Our server Amaury was great! He made sure our expectations were exceeded in every way! Always a great time with every visit! Highly recommend Santaella to anyone!

My husband and I love our experience at Santaella. We enjoyed the goat cheese quesadilla and our entree of sea bass. So delicious!!! The atmosphere was wonderful...high energy and beautiful decor. We had a wonderful experience at Santaella!!!

Wonderful setting and incredible food and wait staff! Loved this experience overall and enjoyed everything we ordered! Be sure to leave room for dessert :) and the cocktails were beyond delicious!
Only complaint would be that the music was quite loud, and during the time we were there it was up and down in volume level constantly. Overall I would say still a bit too loud for the environment as you should still be able to converse with the people across the table from you.
Otherwise, the dining area is beautifully designed. It feels like your in the jungle with their glass wall full of plants outside which are lit up at night. The Interior design doesn’t seem to quite flow to the bar however. The lights that are so beautifully arranged in the dining space, don’t tie into the bar and the live plants on the opposite side don’t mesh well with the plant wallpaper. Only suggestion here would be to tie in the lights in a smaller scale. And add a few living plants.
Loved this restaurant though and will definitely recommend to any future visits to San Juan! :)

Delicious! Fun! We loved it. The tuna tacos were a standout as well as the goat cheese quesadilla. Tons of well-heeled sexy locals, tucked into a neighborhood. We loved it!!

Was a great evening! A little rough start as we ran a minute late with traffic and they didn’t answer phone and automatically cancelled our reservation without a grace time or trying to reach us. Thankfully they sat us and our server Ivan took great care of us. Try the goat cheese white truffle quesadilla!

With the exception of the plantain soup made with a hame broth base, we loved the food. We had a nice tapas style dinner with the Brussels sprout salad. The sliders, quesadilla and empeñadas were very tasty. The wait staff were great!

Some San Juan restaurants may have meticulous execution, interior design, popularity, but this place is magical. Every dish that came to the table was music. We will come to SJ just to eat here.

Very disappointing after reading so many good things about this place. I ordered one of the daily recommendations-an octopus stew with Italian broad beans and chorizo (Spanish classic dish) but the balance of ingredients was completely wrong: very little octopus and beans and way too much chorizo which completely spoiled the dish (which was served to me boiling hot).
The worst by far was the service: the barmen supposed to be waiting for me were busier having a chat, laughing watching at their phone rather than looking after me.
Still can’t get my head around the fact that this place has so many good reviews.

What a fantastic dining experience. All the food was incredible, the staff was amazing, and the decor and ambience so unique and inviting. My only regret is that I wasn't physically capable of trying everything on the menu! I can't wait to return to San Juan; Santaella will continue to be a regular stop for me on every visit.

The restaurant was fabulous. Great menu. Amazing array of cocktails. Food choices were incredible. Loved that the focus was on local food. Had a Sweet Plantain Au Gratin dish as my main course and it was delicious. Décor was lovely, simple but loved the wall of plants with the mirror behind it. The service was incredible. Our waiter was super attentive and even made sure a cab was waiting for us once we finished. I would definitely go back!!!!

My fourth trip to this restaurant and somehow it just keeps getting better! The base menu is amazing but then when they tempt you with the chef’s specials you have no choice but to over order! The empanadillas of the day were sausage and plantain, they could not have packed more flavor into that perfectly crisp dough. The other stunner was the burrata with pear poached in port with pine nuts and a little baguette that was warm and crisp, the pear took that simple appetizer to another level. The pork belly and ribeye were equally amazing and sadly we had no room left for dessert. I used to say this was my favorite restaurant in Puerto Rico, but now it’s my top choice anywhere!
