San Matteo Pizzeria e Cucina
At San Matteo Pizzeria e Cucina located in the Upper East Side of New York City, guests enjoy authentic Neapolitan pizzas, panuozzi and other Italian favorites. Panuozzi, which is made with charred pizza dough that is folded over and stuffed with tasty ingredients, is growing in popularity, especially in the New York City pizzeria scene. San Matteo Pizzeria e Cucina has mastered this unique dish with its selection of panuozzi.
Because San Matteo Pizzeria e Cucina is open until 11 p.m., it is a suitable place for late-night meals with family or friends. Sip on a glass of red or white wine while partaking in popular menu items like the pancetta panuozzo, which features dry-cured pancetta, provolone cheese, black pepper and artichokes, and the Diavola pizza, which is topped with fresh basil, homemade mozzarella, spicy soppressata and parmigiano reggiano.
We love San Matteo, food, bar and service are excellent.
It was a nice place, with good pizzas and pasta. The service was very good, the prepare us a special dish that is not in the menu. :)
Friendly staff, energetic environment. We had the zucchini blossoms which was stuffed with a fresh mozzarella and then battered and fried. They were delicious. The Bolognese was well seasoned. The Gnocchi was also very delicious and cheesy. They are known for their brick oven pizzas but at the time I was feeling a pasta dish and not a pizza. The pizzas looked very good from looking at some the pizzas around us.
Pizza are not amazing in regards of the price we paid
This is a lively, neighborhood spot. Our dinner was ok. Good bread, salads were generous but bland. Pizza crust was great, but soggy in the middle. Overall, ok.
The pizza was amazing -- almost like being in Naples!
I learned about San Matteo on IG. Food looked just like the pics! The quality of the food was a 10!
Nice and good food. Service is ok
Disappointed by the food. Pizza dough was a little chewy.. anti-pasti were ok but not amazing
I would recommend the pizza and other italian food, but I would warn a friend about the poor service. I've encountered it more than once, but overlooked it because I like the food so much. This time however we were completely ignored which is not what I want when I go out to eat. Everything took much longer than it should have because our waiter never came by. We felt badly for the busboys because they could only fill in the gap for the waiter's inattention. I am going to think twice about how much I like the food versus how much I don't like the service.
Just super mediocre borderline terrible quality Italian pizza. No one should claim to serve original Neapolitan pizzas when it’s just american trash
Best pizza on UES , good and inexpensive wines, attentive service and great environment - nice that you can reserve a table here.
Stopped in to grab some lunch. Nice ambiance with large floor to ceiling windows that open up and allow guests to enjoy fresh air on a nice day.
Ok, perfect. Maybe pizza a Little too cooked. Anyway good
Feels like Italy! Very fresh and tasty.
The first time we ate here we thought we finally found good pizza on the upper east side. And the second time we ordered in, only to receive a soggy, poor pizza. But we thought that it was just a delivery problem so we went again to try it - and the same soggy pizza was delivered to our table! The arugula salad was great but hey, we went there for the pizza. Each time we ordered our standard - a Margarita - and whether we try a fourth time or not remains to be seen. SO disappointed.
Always outstanding food and service!
Lovely and delicious!
Pasta came out with appetizer course... waitress didn’t care... pizza came out after everyone was done eating... waitress didn’t care.
Amazing. Worth the trip.
I have been to San Matteo 3 other times and had a much better experience. Honestly this time it was fairly disappointing, especially the service. Although I reserved a table for 5 people, 1 day ahead, we were placed on a table for 4....The service was rather slow and the waiter (an Italian man) was not that friendly. A pity because the food is otherwise good and the pizza is among the best ones in town.
Food was very good. We had the meatballs and the rice balls. The waiter could have been more attentive.
Really wonderful pizza and the sandwich in pizza dough was divine! We will be back.
We chose San Matteo for our Valentine’s Day dinner because we love the delicious food and the place, so it’s a treat. The wait staff did an impressive job of serving the packed place and keeping calm and friendly, as they always are. Love it!
Relatively expensive for the experience. Dish of pasta should not be more than 25 unless fine dining.
Great pizza great service. My friend had the pasta and it was wonderful
Awful experience. After a nice salad, we waited and waited and waited for our pizzas to show up at the table. After several polite questions as to what was happening to our food we were finally told -1hr later! - that the pizza oven was too hot and that it was being used to cook meat so pizza could not be served. We were asked to reorder something else instead. With a crowded restaurant and facing another at least 30 min wait for our food, we decided to leave. No apologies or concessions were offered. We have been at San Mateo many times and like it, but we will not be back after this experience. It could not have been handled more poorly!
Love this pizza! Great quality!!! Highly recommend!
The food was fresh and delicious and the portions were enormous. Four of us had the special meatball appetizer, the salumi platter and the spinach salad to begin and then the margarita pizza and a sensational white pizza with wild boar sausage and homemade mozzarella. Everything was wonderful. We had a terrific red wine recommended by our server. I can’t imagine how anyone can find room for dessert. We were very happy to walk off our dinner.
San Matteo is justifiably popular and reservations are really necessary, especially in the evening. The tables are a little small which necessitates some moving around of plates and platters. Sadly, they misplaced our doggie bag which would have been a great lunch on the next day.
Unpretentious Italian food served with a smile
What made our experience negative was the attitude of the host. I don’t know if he was the manager but he seems to be there coincidentally. My friend asked him if the parmigiana had gluten. He didn’t know on the spot but also after asking in the kitchen he told my friend that there might be some flour but if she wasn’t celiac she should have been fine. He was almost jocking about that...How can you tell that to somebody that may have issue with gluten! Every time we asked questions his way of answering was annoyed. Being Italians, we understood him very well ! Also his facial expressions...
On the positive side the food was very good. We had the parmigiana and prosciutto di Parma as appetizer . Then pizza. Everything was really good...
San Matteo is my favorite pizza place in the city! Just like the pizza in Italy. I keep saying I’ll try the pasta but the pizza is just too delicious.
Locale accogliente, ottimo cibo, otima pizza, assolutamente da provare.
Amazing, authentic Italian pizza and pasta. Definitely very crowded around dinner time and not much space to wait, so reservations are a must. Service is always quick, even when its busy. Everything on the menu is delicious and fresh.
San Mateo was fantastic!! The Arancini appetizer is amazing. The pizza was some of the best ever!! Make sure you finish with the gelato, Nutella & hazelnut calzone. Words cannot describe it. Wish I was eating there now!
Food was great but service very poor. Waited for food more than one hour and some plates never arrived.
Made a reservation on Xmas eve for this restaurant that wasn’t open. We just had to walk a couple blocks and settle on something mediocre bc it was cold. Thumbs down indeed.
