Sam's Chowder House Ratings and Reviews
We were seated right away and our waiter came right over to introduce himself. We ordered our drinks, appetizer and main courses all at once. Maybe shouldn't have done that. Our appetizer arrived before the drinks and our main meal followed a few minutes later. The drinks arrived last. The waiter was very apologetic, it was a fairly busy Saturday night, but I felt a bit rushed. We had a 5:15 reservation and we were done by 6:15. The food was amazing. Just wish we could have slowed things down a bit.
Have seen the packed parking lot many times finally made a reservation and loved it. Great selection of seafood including local, saw plenty of kid-friendly options, excellent appetizers, main courses, gumbo and desserts. Pricey but location is outstanding, lots of indoor and outdoor seating for groups of all sizes, we will definitely go back for future special occasions.
We come here often for the clam chowder, which is very good! This was our 1st time for a full meal, and we were very disappointed in the food quality; very bland, starchy, just not very good. We will continue to come for a beer, chowder, view, but not the main menu.
Second time there and for me "I had the seafood spaghetti" as main course, it was the best I've ever had here in the US. For appetizer we had the tuna poke and it was delicious. My wife had the hot lobster roll and she liked it but it was dry. My first time there I had it and it was dry then. All it would need is a dipping sauce like a butter garlic sauce or aioli. We also had a clam chowder cup and it was ok. My cocktail drink was good and strong but the margarita my wife had was just ok. Overall it good dining experience and I would defiantly go back, especially for the beautiful view.
We have frequented Sam's Chowder House almost since it was started. We are sad to see the changes: high prices, too crowded, no parking, wait-staff who tried to sell you everything...
clam chowder to start with (when you've ordered a fairly heavy lunch?), more beverages, home-made desserts....)Wait-staff sounded like they were reading a script on top of "pushing the food."
We live in San Francisco and for my 75th birthday I had my choice of any restaurant I wanted. I selected Sam's...a romantic drive down hwy. 1, sunset at 5:45 dinner reservation at 6:30...the wonderful greeting...the best waiter anyone could ask for...a fabulous ahi tuna starter, beautiful scampi linguini, gorgeous wild salmon ... leisurely enjoying each other and the meal. And the finale a french style cake to live for! Thanks to Sam's it was a memorable evening to celebrate a memorable birthday.
I love everything about the place. The seafood preparation and presentation is spectacular. The service is attentive but never cloying, and if you are lucky to get outdoor deck dining, you have just reached Nirvana. I always look forward to returning, and you simply can not beat the drive along Highway One to Sam's front door.
Amazing food. Have to get the Lobster roll! But its so rich you can split it. Clam chowder, cioppino, mussels, oysters and prawn cocktail are also very good!
We sat outside on the deck because it was a beautiful day and watched the waves and the beach and the ships. A perfect view! Go early if it is a nice day and you want to sit outside. We got there about 15 minutes before it opened and went right in, but by the time we left it was over an hour wait for an outside table.
We were excited to try their naked lobster roll. Unfortunately we were disappointed. The lobster was ehh. The chowder was runny and tasted like it was from a mix. We did enjoy the calamari we ordered. It was fresh and tasty. The view and the weather was superb. It was a fantastic Friday afternoon at half moon bay!
As usual, the lobster rolls were sublime, the beer a delicious complement and yes, we shared key lime pie and it was yummy! We always have a wonderful time and good food. It's become a lovely outing for us and our friends as we live in San Jose. Highly recommend!
