Sam's Chowder House Ratings and Reviews
Very disappointing. Although the seafood was good, the non-seafood entree was not, the service mediocre (absent), and the noise off the scale when a live, in-restaurant sportscast interrupted and interfered with our Saturday night dinner out. You may have a very different experience there (if you stick to the seafood, get to enjoy the ocean view, and go on a non-broadcast night) but we will never go back.
The food is terrible at Sam's and seems to be getting worse. We have been going to Sam's for years & the food has always been average but the past several times we have gone, the food was terrible- borderline unedible. Really disappointing- we ordered the fried calamari, which was so overcooked that it felt more like eating rubber bands. We also ordered the crab sandwich, which lacked any flavor; the crab meat was frozen/thawed and was soggy. The worst part was we ordered a whole steamed lobster. The lobster meat was fine, but there was only 1/4 pound of meat, which was UNACCEPTABLE to charge for. The sides were terrible. The broccolini did not have the raisins & pine nuts & the salad was so over dressed it was not edible. terrible
It was Date Night and we were not disappointed. Great service, fantastic drinks, wonderful food, and a view! We were not hurried, the service was impeccable, our waiters timing was awesome as well as the bus staff. Everyone was social and full of smiles, just adding to our delightful experience. Does not get much better than that.
When we arrived there was a lot of people waiting to be seated and it looked like trouble. The guy before me also had reservation for four and at the same time as mine. Both of our groups got to seat immediately while others waited. Service was great! Swordfish was great! We will be back to try the famous Lobster Roll.
My wife and I come to Sam's every other month for their lobster ceviche, and lobster roll.
They also have very good chowder, ordered the cup and not the bowl....cup is a regualar size bowl...lobster roll is very good although sometimes it is not seasoned well.
Great outside dining and lots to look at over the bay.
Sam's is a GREAT spot on the coast, south of San Francisco. The focus on seafood really pays off. All you may have heard about the lobster roll being the best there is, applies equally well to the other dishes. The mussels in a lively tomato based broth could not be better. The paella and ciopino are uniformly outstanding. If you are in the vicinity of Half Moon Bay, CA. Do not miss this gem.
Clam chowder is awesome. A "cup" is plenty. Others in the party had the lobster roll which they acknowledged was one of the best. The service was fabulous. We had a corner window table with a great view. Parking is a challenge due to the popularity of the restaurant. We had trouble getting out of the parking lot because two cars were waiting to take our spot and had boxed us in because they didn't want the other car getting an advantage!
We have been going to Sam's regularly for their signature lobster roll sandwich and clam chowder. Order the cup of clam chowder as it is a bowl by anyone's definition. The lobster roll sandwich is $$$, but comes with a generous amount of lobster served traditionaly in a soft bun with a top slit. It would be hard to get this sandwich wrong. Sam's is a rustic restaurant with a great view of the beach. Many people choose to eat outside, but it can be quite cold. The heaters help.
We had an 11 am reservation and were seated well in advance of the Sunday lunch crowd. Our lunch was not served until after noon. We were told they were busy and the kitchen was jammed. when they took our order the restaurant was not even half full. Food was ok. We will stick to Barbara's next time.
The location is nice, and service was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful. The food is ok, but too much salt in the chowder, and way too much butter on the lobster roll. This actually distracted from the food which would have been pretty good otherwise.
I'd go back, but specifically ask for my food to be cooked a bit more healthily.
The restaurant is very crowded and loud but the bar scene is vibrant and the live music was excellent. Our server was somewhat disinterested and really made very little effort to recommend particular dishes. While the service was average, the food was actually quite good. Sam's is a good place for casual dining but don't expect a special dining experience.
The hostess at the front was aloof, clearly not trained to properly welcome guests. It was unusually dark inside too. Not a good first impression. Had it not been for a very good waitress, the quality of service rating would be poor. Our table for 7 was ready right away, but quite tilted and wobbly. The clam chowder was excellent, the rest just average. The kids' fries were dried out and the mac 'n cheese was soggy, so two of the kids with us wouldn't eat their usual favorites. But the chicken tenders and spaghtetti were a hit. It was a foggy day, so the beautiful view could not make up for the retaurant's deficiencies. We walked down to the beach after lunch and had a better time there.
The New England Clam Chowder was very good. My husband enjoyed his halibut. However, the lobster roll is nothing special. There is a lot of tasty lobster, but the lobster is heated in butter with some celery and tossed in the roll. There is no mayo or any other type of binder. On the other hand, my standard for a lobster roll is the one served at the Harbor Gawker in Vinalhaven, Maine. Now that is yummy!!
