About Salut Bar Americain - St. Paul
Salut Bar Americain - St. Paul is the brasserie down the block. Warm and welcoming, with an urbane wit and urban sensibility, it’s an afternoon hangout and an evening refuge. It’s your neighbor with a French accent. The setting evokes a classic Parisian bistro/restaurant. The service is spirited, confident and capably executed. And the cooking captures the freshness and hearty flavor of French cuisine. It’s the vibe inside that sets Salut apart from bowing maitre ‘d’s and sniffing sommeliers. From the welcoming wine list, to the playful décor, to the genial buzz in the dining room, and two Event Spaces, Salut celebrates the French restaurant’s essential qualities while dispensing with the exclusionary ones. It demystifies French food by making it accessible and rewarding while poking fun at the stereotypes that surround it. In this sense, Salut is a dual citizen: Authentically French! Book the Le Grand Boeuf family-style feast, serving 8-10 people.

Salut Bar Americain - St. Paul Ratings and Reviews
This was a return visit after a hiatus of several years. Still crowded and a bit noisy on weekends. Unfortunately, we got off to bad start with their special Manhattan cocktail made with bacon infused whiskey--possibly the worst idea ever for a drink. It literally left a bad taste in my mouth. The baked oyster hor d'oeuvre was bland, but the entrees were excellent. The lamb leg was tasty and the half chicken was crispy and juicy. Likewise, the pot de creme dessert was enjoyed by all. Service was just right.
The only thing negative was that there was some kind of draft/air movement that affected us on our table. We called this to the attention of the wait staff and they must have talked with management.
Throughout the rest of the 90 minutes it was alternately drafty and then warm.
Nicscous salad was disappointing this time. Sort of thrown together with an overdone chunk of fish, one-half a hard boiled egg, and way too many olives!
And 6 bucks for a cappuccino is outrageous!
Service was OK, but a few mistakes on the order/bill.
All in all, not a very good experience.
The Duck special tasted as if it were previously cooked and then reheated. Its presentation was just a pile of food. The squash might have looked better on its own off to the side.
The Cobb Salad was smaller than it has been. I’ve been getting it for years and it didn’t look the same. Less bacon & chicken. Fewer eggs (always has 3 halves this one had 2).
I realize there are different cooks different days, and Chefs have changed. As a regular, change is noticeable. Some change is good. Some isn’t. Just documenting my experience.
Returned for a second visit as the food, ambience and service was good the first and this second time. We like the French bistro decor and feel (albeit more spacious than the norm in France) and the food is tasty and portion sizes not overwhelming. The lunch three-course menu offering was a value for the money, and salmon and walleye meals cooked perfectly. The convenience of a dedicated parking lot next to the restaurant is a plus. We’d gladly return again.
Great brunch at Salut. I tend to go just for the patio during summer but enjoyed the warm comfortable booths indoors as well as the excellent service when the weather turns chilly.
We had an awesome and relaxing brunch in a great setting. We were celebrating a birthday but we will go back for a great start to any weekend day!
Something was going on in this restaurant tonight. We waited 1-1/2 hours for our meals. The waitress noted the excessive wait and gave us free dessert which was nice, but took another 30 minutes. We were at the restaurant for around 2-1/2 hours, not by choice.
Though the evening had a huge crowd, I was able to get a reservation via Open Table close to the time I wanted. The place was noisy, but we were in a booth so could hear quite well. The food is always top flight! Our server was vivacious and friendly, helpful and fun. Salut is one of our most favorite places to eat, either by ourselves or meeting others. Lunch is usually when we meet; this was only the third time we have been there for an evening meal. Wish the parking was easier, but that's not YOUR problem! And one is always close by. Keep up the great work on Grand Avenue.
Lovely evening. Got there at end of happy hour and was able to enjoy bargain priced briny blue points. Perfect summer tomatoes, pesto and creamy bursts elevated tomato tartine to exquisite. Nice steak frittes, too. Finished with decadent choc mousse and good coffee. Could hardly have been tastier or more well presented. Only down sides? Poor quality baguette and house wines only just drinkable...kitchen and sommalier need to get to work.
The service was really very slow. I waited a bit without being greeted to be seated which was annoying. There was a staff person at the desk, he simply did not acknowledge my presence which I found rude. After another person seated me the waitress took awhile to appear but was very personable. The food was fine but nothing spectacular and a bit expensive considering what we ordered.
