Chicken was over grilled and fries was slightly cold but overall my server made up for it all
I checked the website info and made reservation. When we got there they said the kitchen is closing in 10 mins. But they let us made reservation? Very disappointed. We sat and made an order, a very quick one to fix such as lobster roll. The sandwich was very soggy and the fries are very cold. I can’t believe I had this experience since it’s talk of the town.
We are new to the area, so we asked Open Table for a recommendation for my husband’s birthday dinner. Saltine was a fabulous choice. From appetizer (calamari) through entrées (scallops and branzino), to the surprise dessert (no spoilers, but great fun), the food, service (Martin), and total experience was perfect. We could not have made a better choice.
The food was good but it was a bit pricey. There were small offerings of seafood with a lot of sides. Four scallops and a lot of rice for $32.00.
Our service was very slow. The waitress was excellent, but we were left alone for long periods of time needing beverage refills, waiting on our food, etc. Maybe it was an off night? The food was very good. I don't think we'll be returning anytime soon when in need of a date night.
Great service and excellent food! Have already told others to visit!
Waiter took 20 minutes before telling us they were out of a dessert
Great waitress! Best oysters in Hampton Roads! Incredible atmosphere and decor! Overall new favorite place!
Great food and presentation with fun ambiance. Delicious creative cocktails, but you will pay 13-15 dollars per drink.
The food was great and service even better. The special dessert bomb was awesome.
Food and service was amazing! Not a very big fan of the rye rolls served with dinner, but they were very fresh. Will visit again 😉
Terrible! Had a reservation for six but due to special occasion had to add three. Accordingly we arrived early. With clearly visible empty tables and statements from us that we would split up, the manager insisted on keeping us 15 past the reserved time. Most of our party left in disgust. Amateurish and infantile behavior on the part of management. Go elsewhere !!
Wahoo entree was under cooked. They agreed but instead of cooking a new piece they recooked the original piece. Not very good. They gave us a discount but I would have preferred they start over with a new filet.
One of the waitresses a young blond girl, I don’t remembre her mame, we asked her to bring some crackers and her answer was: it is not my table and didn’t bring them.
Our first visit this past summer was AMAZING and that’s why we returned. Our visit this time was AWFUL! Our server was slow and didn’t know the menu. Example would be when my son asked what kind of fish Wahoo was and she said it wasn’t thick or firm like a sword fish and was an ok fish. When we got it, it was thicker than a swordfish and definitely firm. My son liked the Wahoo although it was a bit dry. My whole lobster had no flavor and lots of water which was strange being I asked for broiled. Lobster Mac and cheese was just ok and the same for the risotto. Not much clover in either. The lobster Rockefeller appetizer was very good. We went at least 20+ mins between times of seeing our server or having her check in with us. Finally at the end we asked another server if we could get our check after finishing our dessert and sitting and waiting again. This other server was quick to get our check and apologized for our server saying she had several tables seated in the last 30 mins. I told her our server hadn’t been by in awhile and being we were in the corner booth by the kitchen doors I would think it would be easy to check on us. She took my credit card, processed it and came back apologizing again for our server. Our server never came by herself even though she walked into the kitchen at least 3 times after we got our check dropped. I normally tip at least 35 to 40% on good service even if we didn’t like the food. I tipped 15% which I can’t even tell you the last time I’ve ever tipped under 20% for bad service but the fact she didn’t come back to drop our check or pick it up etc...was the reason for 15% The final thing was our free 2 hr parking in the hotel garage. Because our server was taking way to long we ended up being at almost 3 hrs and had to pay some towards parking. Not a big deal but when a restaurant isn’t busy on a Sunday night, dinner should be done easily in 1 1/2hrs.
Our next visit to Norfolk, we may give your restaurant a 3rd try.
Never have I had such a poor dining experience. The “fresh” rockfish tasted like bleach. The salad was so overly vinegary it was inedible. The burger was overcooked but edible. The server didn’t bring lemon, mustard, ketchup etc. despite repeated requests. I don’t recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Food was great and plentiful. Staff friendly and good value. We’ll go back.
Martin was an amazing server
We went with a party of five. The food was great, the drinks even better.
Our server was fantastic. Our experience was wonderful. From the moment we walked in to the moment we walked out.
We had a great experience at Saltine for my in-laws 50 th wedding anniversary. Our server, Nichole was excellent. The food was wonderful and the dessert to celebrate the anniversary was amazing!
Great food and great service. Wide selection menu. Cocktails are different and interesting.
Birthday dinner. We ordered crab soup, the kale salad with beets, crab cake dinners with sweet plantains, mashed potatoes, spinach, succotash was the vegetable offered that day. The food was really good. Our server Elisse was very nice. I would return if I am in the area.
Outstanding service, delicious food, beautiful atmosphere.
One item (She Crab Soup) was watered down and didn't meet expectations. All other apps & entrees were delightful (as usual). Wait staff was superb. Noisy party right next to our table (corner table) made for some challenges in hearing. I would definitely eat here again and believe this was a "one off" situation on a busy Saturday night.
Heather was our waitress. She took very good care of us the entire night. Our family had several celebrations and she took note, surprising us at the end of the ebony with a gorgeous dessert presentation. The restaurant was busy, we were a large group, and we had a restless 4 year old with us. Heather never made us wait for anything, she was patient, and really went the extra mile. The food was exceptional; the service was fabulous. In general, my husband and I believe that in Norfolk you will either have good food or good service, but never both. Saltine defies that rule, especially with Heather’s help.
Post theatre oyster appetizers & drinks at the Saltine bar followed by fabulous seafood dinner in the Saltine restaurant. Both Robert M. & Bianca made this evening with friends a wonderful experience.
Wonderfull food and experience...again!!!
Cool atmosphere and great raw bar. VA oysters were yummy
The experience was amazing! Food was great with a nice ambience. Food is very pricey so wouldnt go very often but definitely for birthdays or celebrations!!
Food and service was absolutely amazing.
The food was excellent and our server, Ellisse, was superb, maybe the best server I've ever had. She was very knowledgeable about the menu, and took exceptional interest in making sure that we had a fantastic experience, which we did.
Our go to place for a special evening.
Consistently a great experience. Menu has something for everyone, service is terrific and food is excellent.
We love everything about Saltines. We make a reservation every time we’re in town. Looking forward to our next visit.
Martin was our server and did a phenomenal job. The place was top-notch and the food was delicious. Definitely recommend for anyone in the Norfolk area.
My son and I celebrated our birthdays at Saltine and everything was wonderful! We had oysters as an appetizer along with the crab cakes and mussels (we were really hungry!). I had the whole chili rock fish which was good and my son had the scallops. Ben, our server, was great although he got sidelined with serving a large table. We celebrated our birthdays with the decadent “Orb”... a dark chocolate shell containing 3 scoops of ice cream, sides of raspberry & mango sauces, and brownie & cheesecake bites...! Definitely a 5 star establishment!
Waitress was great and gave phenomenal recommendations!
The food was excellent and everything our server Joanna recommended was fabulous!
I love the food, but the restaurant is really not busy enough to warrant all those tiny, cramped tables for that price in Hampton Roads. If you are going to pay $200 for a nice dinner in this area, I don't expect to have my table bumped by every guest trying to get in and out of his/her seat. We made advance reservations for our anniversary, and called out that we were there for our anniversary, and we still got crammed into a tiny table with no room. Twice I had items knocked off my table by other diners on either side. Spread the tables out a little when it is less crowded, or sit me at one of the 8 other vacant "real" tables in the "reserved" dining areas. My third time there, and I'm not sure I'll be back.
