Good food, decor is lacking and very dark, will try again
Food was good, service not so much. Too much time between courses, bringing the 2nd cocktail. WE made our wine selection, the waiter took it and came back later stating it was out of stock, Selection #2 was brought, but not cold enough. Back to the kitchen where the ice bucket was kept. Another round of checking and still not cold enough. Finally, it was deemed acceptable. If the wine is being kept remotely from the table, then it would be helpful if the waiter was more attentive to check the wine glass levels, and not wait until some are bone dry. Eventually, we requested the wine to be left on the table. Without dessert, the process took two hours. All in all, just not so great and a disappointment after we had received rave reviews from another dinner a few weeks earlier. Win some, lose some, I guess.
Overall food at least main course was good. The appetizer of oysters Rockefeller was horrible. The drinks overpriced. The service was ok though waiter tried to overcharge for several items-sides and the wine. Fortunately we caught it and they remedied though another employee came and apologized not our waiter. Very expensive not really worth it.
Nice meal, the dark paneled walls are basement-like. The fish was fresh and cooked to a perfect medium (sockeye salmon) and was very fast. Dessert is fantastic big enough to split.
I can always count on a wonderful meal and experience dining at Saltine. Visiting family were impressed with service (Awesone ROBERT!), menu selection (even the sides!!) and the very special ending dessert - the ORB! Thanks Robert for making everything perfect. See you again soon!
The service and food were excellent. Christi was our server and she explained menu items and drinks to us and also made perfect recommendations. We were very happy with our dinner, the food was delicious. The only problem was the acoustics - it was noisy. After dinner we went upstairs to the rooftop for drinks and dessert and were sad that they did not offer Baileys or any liquors upstairs. It was also loud with live music but we sat outside and were able to chat. We will definitely return to Saltines and would be very happy with Christi as our server again.
Service was superb. Food was excellent. Online booking made it a breeze. Would have been nice to know they would validate parking at the hotel but we parked very close anyway.
This is truly a five star resturant. Whenever I've been in Norfolk, I make apoint of dining here.
Being from Maryland, I appreicate the selection but most of all the freshness of seafood.
It is ideal for a romantic dinner or just having lunch.
The food was awesome! Service was outstanding! Overall great meal. I would return and recommend.
Took almost 2 hours to get our entree
The food was terrible. Probably the best thing they had was the soup. The lamb, pork chops and seafood boil was all disgusting. Under and over cooked food with little to no seasoning. Will not go back unless it's for drinks only.
I was very disappointed. First they had run out shrimp for the appetizer. They had Advertised a Lowcountry boil for that evening. This would imply to me that it was something special. The meal was anything but. The first entrée that I was served was completely cold and they did replace it without hesitation. However the second entrée that I received contained mushy shrimp, prepealed over cooked crawfish, dry as a bone andouille, undercooked potatoes and frozen corn on the cob (not fresh). My husbands entrée, though tasty, was also served cold. My son had the pork chop and raved about the accompaniments but said the pork chop lacked flavor. I found the drink menu to be overpriced and pretentious. Overall I wished I had stayed home and saved the $250 bucks!
Nice overnight sray in Norfolk, VA - We selected a good seafood restaurant for the evening. The whole Red Snapper cooked in a deep fry oil was outstanding - must try.
On vacation - great oysters and clams and the seafood chowder tasted like more. Service was very good.
We dined here the night we arrived and then the last night of our stay.
Saltine was fantastic! We sat outside on their wonderful patio, and Nichole our server was very attentive, sweet, and helpful--she recommended some great wine and entree choices. Oysters were great, and the Crispy Sweet Chili Red Snapper was INCREDIBLE.
Always excellent!! We were unfortunately honored with a noisy neighbor....but ALL IS WELL!
Great setting with an innovative menu. The food was prepared very well and presentation was well above average. Easy choice to re-visit Saltine next time we’re in town.
Fish was overcooked. Service was really good. Ambience was a bit loud and crowded.
My son was in town for a brief visit. The sazerac cocktails from the bar were the best I’ve had outside New Orleans. The local oysters were great. Soft shell crabs were on the menu and I could not have been more pleased. Really a lot of fun.
From the time we sat at the bar till we got to our reserved table wasn't very pleasant. it took 4ever to get our drinks and mines was nasty. Even the waiter didn't understand why it took so long...so needless to say we didn't drink them. We had gotten there before our 5:00 reservation and checked in and the host said someone will seat us AT 5. They never came to get us. I saw others being seated so I went and asked the question, why haven't we been seated it was 5:10. She asked my name AGAIN as if I hadn't even checked in. They tried to seat us at the very first booth in traffic...my husband refused it. Then they took us to the back where there were only 2 other couples seated....where we should have been taken anyways! But lo and behold we had to constantly fan the flies away!! Needless to say the bread, calamari and the sweet tea were the best thing I ate in the place. HOWEVER, Elise was the sweetest, most attentive waitress I've ever had. And after my God daughter called and spoke with the manager about what we had experienced there, he was very apologetic and accommodating to say the least. He then offered and paid for my husbands 2 bar drinks and complimented the calamari appetizer. So we had a not so pleasant experience for less than $100....so I am grateful for that. Soooo NOPE, we won't be re-visiting there!!
Good service. A bit pricey but nice place. Nice atmosphere. Had crab cakes they were good but not the best I've had, a bit dry. I would recommend and visit again.
Never a disappointment
This restaurant FAR exceeded our expectations. This is not your typical mundane Hotel in-house Restaurant. Service was outstanding, atmosphere elegant yet warm and food both exceptional and uniquely presented. Andrew, our server, was ON POINT all evening and prided with a comprehensive and enticing dining experience. We will be back!!!!
Our expectations were exceeded during a birthday dinner for my wife. She thoroughly enjoyed it...so thanks to the entire staff of Saltine!
I took my wife there to celebrate her Birthday and it was wonderful. The staff was outstanding and the food was delicious.
The food was tasteless. Oyster po’boy was mainly batter. Service was fair. Giving up on all restaurants at The Main after repeated fails.
Great meal and Elizabeth was an outstanding server.
Saltine was recommend by a coworker and it was fabulous. The food was delicious, the service was outstanding. I will definitely be back.
Everything was flawless except the ceviche (supposedly Peruvian?) which had a fish sauce funk to it that didn’t sit right, even with the sriracha. Salt-crusted rockfish was great as was the smoky-delicious fish pate.
Friendly staff and a comfortable, stylish setting.
The menu choices are regional, which we liked.
Our dinner was served hot, the portions were just right and well presented. Since it was our anniversary, desert was complimentary. Overall though, the taste of the food was underwhelming for the cost. With one drink each (upcharged for round ice cube) , small cup of she-crab each, entrees (upcharged for a substitution of regular mashed for sweet potatoes) the total cost with tip was $156. Bottom line, this is a hotel restaurant that is striving to be locally relevant but there are many more choices in town that will wow you for under $100.
Had a reservation but were able to sit outside near the bar. Great service. Delicious food. Highly recommend this restaurant!
Our waiter Martin was awesome. The food was outstanding, drinks were great and the service was great.
Fantastic! The food was really, really good!!!!!!!
I would recommend Saltines for someone who likes seafood. A bit pricey though.
My daughter and I went for lobster night for my birthday. The lobster was delicious and the dessert was outstanding. It was a chocolate shell with several types of gelato inside as well as brownie and chocolate chip bites. The presentation was wonderful and our server was excellent!
As a chef in the field always taking people places I would recommend them but I feel price is a little high for some of the foods quality. Had a great server but plate runners were sloppy. Had a great time looking around and over all noise level was low and it was easy to talk across the table.
Excellent experience sitting outside on a beautiful night for our 5 year wedding anniversary. Service by Ellisse was amazing and we enjoyed every minute, sip and bite of it.
My wife and I dine out a couple of times a week and we do enjoy exploring menus. We are adventurous eaters . Saltine had an interesting menu but nothing to rave about. We enjoyed the crab toast and we enjoyed the bread with smoke fish spread. I tried the diver scallops and risotto. The scallops were seared nicely but I found that they were overly rich with butter as was the risotto . Just overwhelmed the delicate scallops. What was also discouraging was the brocoli and risotto were cold; although scallops were warm. Kitchen sent out warmer vegetable but it arrived about the time I took my last bite of scallop. My wife had the fish tostada and she said that she was underwhelmed. Presentation was good but just very little flavor. We shared a dessert and the chocolate torte was good. I had to get another cup of French press decaf because of heavy grounds. Waitress was very good but I would not make a trip to downtown Norfolk for this seafood. Cost with gratuity was $154.00 for two.
My only issue was that the crab cake dinner was peppered so that the delicate taste of the crab was undetectable. The preparation and presentation was fine and the experience was very nice. However, I wouldn't order the crab again.
Excellent Brunch and Service! Best Maui French Toast!!!
