We always enjoy our time here and a go to for out of town guests.
Great food! The salmon for restaurant week was great - so was the kale salad. We loved the shrimp at the bar for happy hour before moving to our table inside the restaurant. The only negative was the wine selection for happy hour. I like chardonnay or pinot grigio. The only white wines available were moscato or proseco. I paid $21 for a glass of wine - way too high. There needs to be a better selection of wine on the happy hour menu.
Our waitress, Ellie, was exceptional in every respect and the food was off the hook!
The food and service were wonderful. Heather or waitress was fantastic. Our only wish was that we had been seated in the main dining area. The side room we were in was quiet and the decor was very nice but we wanted to see the rest of the restaurant.
The food was delicious. After hearing the waitress at the table beside us talking about using the tablet and describing the dishes, we felt that our experience was lacking guidance. Would definitely go back if in town - the food was well prepared and the smoked whitefish offered while we waited was excellent.
I went here with a friend on a Friday night, we had reservations. The waitress was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and made great recommendations. The food was hands down amazing and I will definitely be back!
Awesome experience , waited for our requested table and were given free drinks at the bar. Really appreciated that our requests were attended to! Great service and good food.
I enjoyed the meal in its entirety we had a great time
We always love Saltine! It’s a phenomenal spot for date nights, a work dinner, or anything in between. The service is always spot on and the food is delicious. Can’t say enough positive things about our experience here.
Food was excellent. Service was very good. Drinks were just ok. I didn’t like the seating arrangement. I prefer other resturants on Gramby where the seating is not as close together as Saltine. Felt like we had dinner with a bunch of strangers. For us, it’s not just about the food but the overall experience. Probably won’t go back
This restaurant is pricy and elegant, however, the tables are very close together. We were seated next to a workstation where servers were putting dishes away, and that was loud. We were also uncomfortably close to the table next to us. Our server was great, but another service member hovered around, taking plates when we were barely finished. The food was good, but I expected more for the money we paid, like more space, quiet, and less hovering. I was disappointed by it since this is special occasion dining for us
Have visited Saltines many times and it seems that this restaurant consistently improves! Food was delicious as was the service. Our server Jarrett provided outstanding service, we informed him that we were attending a show in town, he timed our dinner perfectly.
The food and service was great.
We had been wanting to try Saltine. The calamari was over fried and the sauce too spicy to eat. I ordered the crab cake dinner. The crab cakes were so so. The succotash and potatoes took up most of the plate which made this entree over priced. My husband ordered the fried shrimp appetizer with a side of fries. The shrimp were over fried. The fries came in a huge salad bowl and were not very warm. This was over priced as well. Huge disappointment.
Did not have the whiskey on the menu.
Prons were not fresh.
Requested steak to be medium rare and it came out wrong and oversalted. Only took two bites.
My family went on Christmas day with 2:45 reservations. We were seated in s semi private room (that was a plus) but the party of 8 next to us were very loud (not the restaurant’s fault). There were not many people seated yet the food took a very long time. I don’t mind a wait if the dishes ordered require a lengthy cook time but Salmon, Prime Rib Melt, Seafood Pasta, Brussels sprouts and fries shouldn’t take 40 minutes. Bianca, our waitress was very pleasant and attentive after our food arrived. The food was pretty good however some of the items ordered were an up charge that we were not made aware of so a $21.00 salmon meal w/2 sides ended up being almost $28.00 instead of the $21.00 listed (pricey for a lunch meal). I typically tip at least 20% but I left a 16% tip (not bad for a $143.00 tab). It killed me to do it but I figured it wasn’t our waitress’ fault. Was it horrible? No. Would I go back? Maybe. I like to give a business a second shot just in case it was a fluke.
Disappointing and expensive.
Went on Christmas Day, after being told, by telephone, that they would be serving a Christmas dinner. They were, but not until the evening.
My mother and I decided to stay and order what we could, since just about nowhere is open in Norfolk on Christmas Day. We ordered from their regular lunch menu.
My mother, 90, ordered a beer, and the waiter plunked down the bottle without asking if she wanted a glass. Rookie move. My mother flagged down various staffers for about five minutes before someone finally brought her a glass.
We split oysters Rockefeller, which had the seafood flavor cooked out of it, giving us the idea we were eating cheese on the half shell.
My blackened rockfish was served with fingerling potatoes, despite the menu showing sweet potatoes. Both items were excellent, a served piping hot. The accompanying vegetable was, to my horror, succotash. Seriously? What is this, a 2-bit diner serving up veggies from the freezer?
My mother's cup of crab soup was too salty. Her oyster po-boy was all right.
Appetizer, one drink a piece, and two unspectacular lunches: 72 bucks before tip. Not worth it at all.
I'm amazed at the stellar reviews this place gets. Hey, it was Christmas, maybe they were saving the big effort for the night's dinner, maybe a staffer or two called out, who knows. That's not for me to figure out. For whatever reason, this was my experience.
I don't plan on dropping money in this establishment again.
Christmas Day lunch. Special
Well prepared food. Good service. A nice mix of fine dining and a chain restaurant feel. Large portions. Consistent quality.
We went for the Gingerbread brunch. We paid $25 a person for 4 of us, and they did not even ask to see our tickets. We were supposed to get a tour of the kitchen according to the information and work with the pastry chefs. They literally gave us one gingerbread kit from Target and sat us at a long table. Absolutely a waste of money. The brunch was good, but certainly did not make up for the disappintment of the Gingerbread house
Overall it was just ok. It was pricey for the quality of the food. Loved the atmosphere but I had just expected it to be better. Slightly disappointed ☹️
I will say the coffee was phenomenal!
Very tasty brunch menu and at a very reasonable price.
Outstanding food, always friendly and helpful service, and a fun cocktail list. If you're a bourbon drinker, there are plenty of great and creative drinks to choose from.
This was our second time dining at Saltine. Our first dining experience in October 2019 was fantastic. Our recent dinner engagement on 14 December 2019 to celebrate my wife & daughter's birthday started down hill from the beginning. Upon our arrival we were informed that our 6:30 pm table reservation was not ready due to the kitchen being backup. We were not seated until 7:05. We ordered appetizers upon being seated and it took 50 minutes to arrive at our table. During our long wait we contemplated walking out several times but ultimately decided to remain since it was a birthday celebration for my wife & daughter. Our waiter kept informing us of the backlog challenges the kitchen crew was facing. We were not informed about what was causing the kitchen backlog but it definitely had a domino affect on our dining experience and that of several other clientele that evening. Upon finishing our appetizers it took an additional 35 minutes before our dinner was served. Our meals were well prepared and we enjoyed tasting each others entrees once our food finally was served.
Once we were finished eating our meals one of the managers came to our table without being prompted and apologizes for our delayed seating and extreme delay of being severed. We were expecting the standard compensation of free desserts/drinks for our inconvenience. We were pleasantly surprised to have my party of four entire meal compensated.
We chart this experience up to a challenging evening for the team members at Saltine and would still highly recommend Saltine to family/friends.
I made reservations for a large party seating in separate tables, which was okay, but when we arrived, they had us wait 30 minutes before they seated us the reason for the wait they ran out of menus. Okay? Then we waiting over an hour and a half for a meal came out they said the kitchen was backed up. Okay? Then they asked us to move our table so that they can room for more guests to be seated, which we did they didn't even offer to compensate us for moving. So we asked the manager for a free bottle of wine, and he ignored us. So then we ordered a round of drinks and told them that we are not paying that is when they took the drinks off our bill. Plus, the oysters were very dry, not good at all. I had high hopes, but this Saltine seafood is just okay.
Great food and holiday vibe. Happy Guly recommend.
Chicken was over grilled and fries was slightly cold but overall my server made up for it all
I checked the website info and made reservation. When we got there they said the kitchen is closing in 10 mins. But they let us made reservation? Very disappointed. We sat and made an order, a very quick one to fix such as lobster roll. The sandwich was very soggy and the fries are very cold. I can’t believe I had this experience since it’s talk of the town.
We are new to the area, so we asked Open Table for a recommendation for my husband’s birthday dinner. Saltine was a fabulous choice. From appetizer (calamari) through entrées (scallops and branzino), to the surprise dessert (no spoilers, but great fun), the food, service (Martin), and total experience was perfect. We could not have made a better choice.
The food was good but it was a bit pricey. There were small offerings of seafood with a lot of sides. Four scallops and a lot of rice for $32.00.
Our service was very slow. The waitress was excellent, but we were left alone for long periods of time needing beverage refills, waiting on our food, etc. Maybe it was an off night? The food was very good. I don't think we'll be returning anytime soon when in need of a date night.
Great service and excellent food! Have already told others to visit!
Waiter took 20 minutes before telling us they were out of a dessert
Great waitress! Best oysters in Hampton Roads! Incredible atmosphere and decor! Overall new favorite place!
Great food and presentation with fun ambiance. Delicious creative cocktails, but you will pay 13-15 dollars per drink.
The food was great and service even better. The special dessert bomb was awesome.
Food and service was amazing! Not a very big fan of the rye rolls served with dinner, but they were very fresh. Will visit again 😉
Terrible! Had a reservation for six but due to special occasion had to add three. Accordingly we arrived early. With clearly visible empty tables and statements from us that we would split up, the manager insisted on keeping us 15 past the reserved time. Most of our party left in disgust. Amateurish and infantile behavior on the part of management. Go elsewhere !!
Wahoo entree was under cooked. They agreed but instead of cooking a new piece they recooked the original piece. Not very good. They gave us a discount but I would have preferred they start over with a new filet.
