We went to this restaurant to celebrate her birthday. The food was good, the prices were reasonable, and it was very easy to park and get in and out in a timely fashion. I recommend the shrimp and grits, although any of the raw oysters are very good as well. Drinks were a little pricey, but for a special occasion this is a good restaurant. The happy hour menu and specials also look very good, so we will be back to try those out.
Food and cocktails were excellent. Service was very thorough without being overbearing. Oysters were everything they should be-terrific. Will definitely return.
A delicious meal at a reasonable price and delicious cocktails. I highly recommend
What a terrific surprise! I was expecting just an oyster-type of experience. We didn't even get oysters (next time!) but will next time. We four tried 2 of the fish entrees and the crab cake. They were all fab. Don't miss the cheese grits. Do ask for the baguette of bread, hot from the oven, with olive oil. The salads were inexpensive and small- just enough to share but you could've easily had one all to yourself. Friends at the table next door said the scallops app and lobster Mac were super yummy. Nice range of wines very reasonably priced. I can't wait to go back. A little hidden gem in a kinda funky shopping center location but don't miss it!
Food and Service was very good.
Had eaten here before and wonderful experience. This visit was different. Food was still fantastic, but service was disorganized and generally not adequate. Ordered 2 dozen oysters, were served wrong quantities of wrong oysters. Management made the mistake right quickly and must thank them. Shared the bartender as a wait staff person - not the greatest idea as the bar was busy.
nice place to eat
will go back
Everything was delicious from start to finish! It took about 15 minutes for someone to take our drink order (I guess we were in the bartender’s section & she didn’t see us?) but after that the service was great!
B’day. Always good seafood and service. Great addition to our neighborhood.0
Excellent food and service. Very enjoyable dining experience.
Food was amazing. We had about a dozen oysters each. The fries ironically were so good we couldn’t resist ourselves.
Very good experience but music was too loud for conversation.
I found the menu to be lacking in good choices. While my husband's meal was delicious, he says, there was nothing that came with it. No bread, no salad, no sides. He was hungry later. I wanted fried oysters which I got, and they were delicious. I got a salad to go with it. It was good, but besides craisins and cheese (which I chose not to have due to a dairy allergy) there nothing on it other than a vinaigrette dressing which was delicious. Not very filling, and no bread or sides listed. The waitress was very attentive. I did see an older couple come in, sit down and read the menu. They promptly left. I would not recommend it to a friend, but I am sure the restaurant is popular with the younger generations. It's just not for me (with the exception of the fried oysters!).
I thought the food was great, but overall the experience left something to be desired. There's way better places to spend $125 for two people during happy hour.
Took my friend to dine for her birthday. The entire experience was wonderful. I highly recommend Saltbox Oyster.
Multiple trips to this restaurant. I keep wanting to be thrilled. But, here is the bottom line: it's too expensive for the experience provided. Four of us dined, ordering oysters for the table, two appetizers, four entrees, and a couple of drinks each. Total bill was just under $300 before tip. A couple of core offerings were unavailable (scallops for instance), the waiter was a nice guy but unseasoned, the drinks took forever, my shrimp and avocado salad was bland, and so on. While the interior is nice (if a bit noisy), it's located in a strip mall. By contrast, we went to nationally acclaimed L'Opossum the week before for the same cost per patron and essentially the same order components. Just. No. Comparison. L'O exceeded expectations for what by RVA standards in a rather expensive meal. Saltbox, if it were half the price might, with improved service, be acceptable. I rarely write negative reviews, but for some reason this proprietor (who is experienced in the market) seems to just not get it. My hope is that this will light a fire leading to improvement. Otherwise, I give him 18 months at the outside.
Great new spot. Some unique dishes and flavors.
Good service and good food
Had a fantastic time! The power even went out as our appetizers were delivered but the team was kind during the outage. We'll be back soon.
The bartender was amazing!! We loved our food and craft cocktails. We’ll definitely be back.
Had a great time, food was outstanding and just really enjoyed being there. It’s definently a place I will go back too
The oysters are overpriced but everything else is standard. I would suggest the restaurant put prices on their website. There have been a number of restaurants at this location that haven’t made it. I hope this one does.
I would love to recommend this but I don’t feel that I can. They had no Irish whiskey in the entire bar- the week before St. Patrick’s day. The wait staff switched out at our drink order so we had to order those twice. The appetizer order was incorrect and half was missed. My husband’s soup was delivered with his meal. We ordered two desserts (twice) and only received one. The food was so salty it was barely edible - I felt like I needed a gallon of water on the way home...and yes the irony of the restaurant name is not lost in this statement. The house was not full so I cannot blame this on a very busy. Night. It simply underwhelms on all fronts. Seems like a nice area and I would like to go back and try other restaurants in this group of shops so I hope this restaurant gets it together and can stay viable because it is a nice concept with a nice space. Good luck to them!
Also the pumpkin crack dessert is incredible!
A must try!
Looking forward to my next visit:)
BESTFried Oysters and special sauce we ever had!!!
The SaltBox is an absolute MUST for oyster lovers !!!
Fried catfish platter for lunch was superb - perfectly breaded fish, great fried, delicious slaw. Can't wait to return for dinner sometime.
Food was delicious.
This was probably the best seafood meal our family has enjoyed in Richmond in years. We sampled most of the oysters on the half-shell, the fried oysters, and an assortment of first courses and dinners. All was just as desired and served promptly by an attentive and pleasant wait staff. The ambiance of the restaurant with the cooks in view set a good tone for a special night out. The menu contains creative combinations of ingredients with a sense of joy. We will return.
Happy hour drink and apps were perfect and dinner was delicious too.
Great place if you just want oysters but other items are a bit pricy. Also you get the idea that the chef thinks that all his dishes are perfect the way they are. As an example they don't offer mustard and you have to ask for salt and pepper.
Another great dinner at Saltbox. Oysters were fresh and yummy. Fantastic service from Quinn. Will be back for sure.
It was good. Bronzini was smaller then it should have been. Got the whole fish and after picking throgh bones not much meat to eat. However, the raw oysters were fantastic. Next time I will get the oyster dishes!
I love this place!
Calling all oyster lovers, SaltBox Oyster Co. has the best oysters in Richmond!
Food and service was awesome!
We loved every bite at SaltBox! The service was fantastic and we tried a variety of oysters with great sauces. The night was definitely reasonable, even with oysters, entrees and wine!
This was our first visit. My husband had the cauldron and I had the branzino. Both were outstanding. The pumpkin dessert was also wonderful as it was not overly sweet and was very flavorful. Can't wait to return!
The service was outstanding, the food was delicious. I look forward to going back again and trying the lamb!
Food was delicious, servers were very helpful and able to answer questions about bar and food items.
I expected, based on the menu and pricing, that this place would have a nice atmosphere for dinner. Instead, it was brightly lit with interrogation style lighting above each table (NOT date friendly) and had the overall feel of a Panera or other casual suburban chain restaurant. The food was passable but not impressive and not anything I would return for.
