Salar Ratings and Reviews
This was our first time. The meal was great. I had shrimp skewers and my husband had the pork chop. Wonderful flavors. The kitchen staff was mindful of my food allergies and substituted non-dairy options for us. Too bad that parking in the Oregon District is horrible. We paid at the parking kiosk and still got a parking ticket. Fix parking issues and we'll happily return.
Our waiter was friendly and helpful. Service was prompt but not pushy. The food was very good. The menu was interesting and extensive - almost anyone would find something they can enjoy. I recommend this restaurant. You will feel comfortable dressed up or casual.
This is a trendy place that seems popular with locals and with the younger crowd. I was a single and seated at a high top in the bar, even though the place was not too busy. The bar had a loud group in at first, which made it a bit uncomfortable until they left. My server was intelligent, knowledgeable and gave good advice. The menu was interesting and my selections were very good. The cocktail menu was similarly interesting and the preparation excellent. Several reviewers commented that it is a bit pricy but I thought the pricing was fair.
This is the second time my fiance and I have dined at Salar and it was as wonderful as the first time! From the incredibly friendly hostess who took us to our table (didn't catch her name) to our server Brooke (? I think) to everyone else who served us by bringing our food or refreshing our water, the staff and the food at Salar is awesome! We will be back and we recommend Salar to our friends :)
We had empanadas for an appetizer, which were very good. Avocado humus and pita was complimentary. For entrees, we had Beef Saltado Style, Pecan and Sage Encrusted Salmon, Asparagus Pizza, and Peruvian Seafood Rice. Everyone raved about their entrees. I had the Salmon and it was the best salmon I have had. Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert. We would definitely return!
We usually love to dine at Salar. Our visit on Saturday was so disappointing. We had a reservation, yet were placed right by the kitchen door and it smelled of fish. We were kindly moved to the back room. There were just the two of us seated in this space - after 30 minutes, another couple was seated right next to us (the whole room was empty). They asked to be placed elsewhere, and then promptly in five more minutes, another couple was seated RIGHT next to us. The entire space was filled with empty tables. I will not be returning to Salar, unless it is for an after dinner drink.
Only problem was the noise level. As an elderly person, I had great difficulty hearing the voices of the friends next to me. THis is such a common event in restaurants now. It seems that younger people don't talk much and therefore, don't care if they can't hear their partners.
We arrived on time for our OT 6pm reservation on a recent Friday night. There were only 2 tables occupied, but by the time we finished, not an empty table. Our friends had not been here before and were quite impressed with the excellent everything that followed for the next 2 hours. We shared 2 appetizers (Cebiche), 4 entrees , a bottle of wine and even dessert. Our server was attentive and we capitalized on her recommendations, especially the Rioja. Total tab + tip was $245.
This is an absolutely stunning dining room. Beautiful ambiance! The cocktails are wonderful and hand crafted (love the peruvian rum!). We really enjoyed all our food, but the pork belly was stunning. I ordered lamb and think I will choose something different the next time we visit. It was good, but nothing special. My husband said the surf and turf was amazing and the steak was cooked perfectly. The service was pretty slow, but we weren't in a hurry. I would suggest giving yourself plenty of time.
Except for a 'glich' in getting our initial drinks (1/2 hr is a tad too long to have to wait), everything was excellent.
We understand and accept the fact that fresh-made food takes a little longer, and enjoyed using the time to converse with our friends, 2 of whom we were bidding farewell to. So a little-longer-than-usual dinner was perfect for us!
The reason we went to this restaurant was because I was hungry for avoid ceviche. The ceviche was bland, but the lamb was excellent. The waitress was very nice, but the wait for the drinks and for the main course took forever. By the time the main course came I was not hungry any more.
As usual, the food was innovative and creative with a fusion of regional cuisines. We had the beef empenadas, a seafood dish on rice, and a skewered shrimp dish. We also had the MacMurray pinot noir. All was great. Our only comment is that the restaurant is a little too dark for our taste. We asked for a better lit table and they were able to accommodate us somewhat. We are regulars and expect to continue to be so.
Bone marrow appetizer was a special treat. Not commonly found on menus anywhere!
Courteous accommodation for my gluten and dairy free requests. Green beans perfectly cooked, roast new potatoes had a wonderful crisp side. Salmon was a little dry, but the crispy underside was a nice addition to the traditional salmon. Mom had the cassoulet of lamb and lentils and loved it. Husband had the pork steak ordered medium, it was perfectly cooked with just a touch of pink, but was strangely dry. Items served with pork were interesting and flavorful. Can't remember our waiters name; he was a bit older than most waiters, and really new his craft! We especially appreciated his slightly louder voice for one person in our party who has hearing loss. Very attentive and had good knowledge of menu and beverages.
