Lucky SF to get Saha back to your city! The food is delicious and unusual. We're looking forward to the chef's new restaurant in SF.
Saha was wonderful as always. We are so disappointed it is closing. Our final meal was marred only because they let themselves run out of liquor and mixers.
Good luck to you in San Francisco!
The only real flaw with Saha Berkeley was they didn't have functional bar or wine menu. So no cocktails and only a very limited selection of wines. The food was always superb, with a an exciting variety of unique middle eastern (Yemen inspired). You couldn't duplicate many of the appetizers, first and second course offerings. Unfortunately, Saha Berekeley is now closed. But there is a Saha in San Francisco, which is getting five star ratings. Gotta be good.
We came last night to bid farewell to a new favorite. Dinner was delicious and service was wonderful, we’re sad to see that go.
Unfortunately, as we unpacked our leftovers at home, we were shocked and upset to see it was packed in styrofoam. Our previous visits had always been boxed in paper containers. Did you just not want to bother with the extra expense in your final days? It’s not like you can use it at your other location in San Francisco because of their ban on styrofoam use. Was it a personal “screw you” to the city of Berkeley, who has banned the use of styrofoam for the past 30 years, for not loving you enough to keep you here?
Whatever the reason, it left a very sour taste in what would have been a gentle farewell. Please don’t take your business frustrations out on the environment.
So sad they are closing in Berkeley. I love their menu and so many choices for vegetarians. I will miss this restaurant
Wonderful food. Great flavors. Fresh ingredients. Loved having vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. The prix fixe is a great value and good way to sample many dishes. Lovely service and loved the decor. Have been wanting to try this for a long time. Wish we had gone sooner. So much more to try on the menu.
Interesting, different and delicious food, very good value.
Cheers to the Chef!
If you like middle eastern/Mediterranean food: DON’T come here! This was a terrible dining experience for me and my Palestinian-born (amazing chef) spouse. The food was awful. We ordered the 3-course prix fixe menu and paid the bill and left after the 2nd course leaving half a bottle of wine because it was just that bad. Fattoush salad had no pita, grilled octopus salad served a boiled octopus, grilled cauliflower served us a boiled, over-cooked cauliflower. Truly, I am lucky enough to know good middle eastern / Mediterranean food. This was so bad I would not want anyone who loves the food to go there.
Food was tasty but since we sat at the bar, we could see how poorly managed the restaurant is and all the inexcusable staff behavior: many missed orders and subsequent yelling between the cooks and wait staff about who was at fault, other arguments among the wait staff (including one staff member - the manager? - physically blocking another staff member from pouring out wine while she yelled at her), bar staff not knowing how to mix drinks (or make an Americano coffee that was on the menu), to the most egregious of all, having cosmopolitans mixed for the wait staff, which they came into the bar area and sipped throughout the evening (drinking on the job, in plain view of customers!) - oh, and since the staff was spending so much time arguing (and drinking), our water glasses were never refilled, our plates were never cleared between courses, and we were not provided serving utensils for plates are meant to be shared...
The food was excellent. But it took 3 hours to complete a meal for 4 people. We sat for 45 minutes after finishing 3 of the 4 mains waiting for the 4th or even anyone to pay attention to us. Finally we spoke up and asked about it saying that we would cancel the order if they hadn’t started it. She can back and said the kitchen said it would take 2 minutes to make the order!! We accepted it and it was delicious, but how ridiculous to sit and wait ignored for 45 minutes for a dish that can be prepared in 2 minutes!!
As serious foodies, this was the best meal we had had in a long time. Even the simplest of dishes had out of this world flavor, e.g., the traditional Yemeni 'La Hoh' salad for the first course--which I would eat daily if I could prepare it that well! My friend felt the same way about her first course, the Braised Octopus salad.
We chose the 3-course prixe fix dinner. What is way cool about that is that this is not some short list of prixx fixe options, it is anything on the menu! The table service was excellent though I dinged a star because they forgot about our second course and went straight from the first to the third course. They scrambled however and our second course arrived within a few minutes. They were very busy that night.
We enjoyed this restaurant so much that we made another reservation for next week! Though it is a little more expensive, 40 bucks (3-course prix fixe) without drinks for that quality of food preparation is so worth it.
Great spot in Berkeley that we were lucky enough to find parking right next to! I had the scallop appetizer and the Mujadara - both of which I enjoyed very much. I'm not generally a tofu guy, but I was really satisfied with the tofu in the mujadara. My girlfriend had the lamb meatballs and the seafood tangine which she said were both incredible. Service was great - we were one of the first ones there which may have had something to do with it, but we told our server that we were on a time crunch to catch a show and she was very accommodating.
It was a Friday evening and almost completely empty and probably for good reason - the food was nothing to write about. I had a vegetarian dish with lentils, rice, vegetables and tofu which I liked but not good enough to go out of the way for. My wife had the duck breast which again was ok but not exceptional. We both had wine but were not impressed with. The service was good but as there were only a few patrons that wasn't hard to do. We won't be back unless someone tells us there's been a big change here.
Food was wonderfully creative riff on Arabic dishes. The service was rather slow, which made it difficult to get to our show at Zellerbach on time.
We had the fried avocado, scallops, yemeni salad, and the meatballs. Hard to pick a favorite, but I might give the meatballs a slight edge.
Wine list needs work - did not know anything on it - tried one sip of the rose which sent us to water as our drink for dinner.
Would definitely go back when in the area.
It's wonderful to experience a restaurant with unusual food, excellent service (even when grossly understaffed - just that night), and fair pricing. We continue to return because we are always delighted!
Excellent food but servers got slammed when the dinner time rush was in full swing. You need at least two more on staff to support the number of dinner guests We had to flag down a waitress for dessert menus and for the check. This does affect the overall dining experience.
The lamb meat balls were recommended by the waitperson but they were dry and tough. Service was friendly but slow, as if there were too many tables per server. She knew we were in a hurry to make a play was no where to be seen when we needed to pay and leave. I had to track her down. Overall, too much money paid for a mediocre experience.
I have always enjoyed my dinners at Saha in San Francisco and when they moved to Berkeley. I haven't been back in about a year and what a difference that time has made. We made dinner reservations for Sunday night at 7:30, the restaurant was half full, and we decided on the tasting menu for $35, three courses. The service was slow, the food came out cold, we waiting for our second and third courses and they came out together. Nothing tasted special as I had remembered from my last visit and the quality has dropped. I will not return to the Berkeley spot and will maybe try the SF spot again if I am in the neighborhood.
We went here at least a year ago and it was quite good. We liked it so much we went back about 5 months ago, when it was still pretty good. Food was great; service poor (apparently understaffed). And this most recent visit, sadly our favorite dish was taken off the menu and the stuff we did order was just OK. The menu looks interesting but the food lacked complexity. The service was minimal, at best.
There were a lot of wonderful flavors in the Middle Eastern dishes here. Service was very friendly but the two servers were overworked. The duck bisteeya was good but a bit dry; my lamb curry was delicious.
I enjoyed and liked the food
Modern middle eastern cuisine. Creative, California ingredients, seafood, really took the cuisine to the next level. All the 2nd courses are great. The bastilla is ok, I wished the fillings would would have stronger flavors, more spices. Of the 3 main we tried, the duck is really not that good.
My extended family adores Saha for the amazing food - we have a vegan, a celiac, and a bunch of omnivores and we are all happy with the range of choices. The food is amazing, and never disappoints. The hardest part is choosing! Every dish, from salad to entree to dessert, is just exquisite. But the prices are steep enough (for us) that we can only justify coming for special occasions. And the service has left a lot to be desired on our last 4 visits. The server this time did not seem to understand the etiquette around when to bring things or clear things - with 2 of us being handed dessert menus while the third person was still only partly through his main course. Water was not filled even though none of us had ordered anything to drink (until we asked).
The service was great. Noise level was excellent. Food is good, but some dishes could be better. Mushroom pate is terrific. The fava bean dish with goat cheese was tasteless. The ravioli itself was good but the sauce on it was bizarrely sweet and lacked any other flavor. Mixed.
Another amazing meal! Really interesting flavors. Good choice for out of town guests, vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Avocado appetizer is recommended. Street parking okay.
The menu was interesting and inviting. I loved the Pick 3 option because it gave those of us without huge appetites a chance to try more variety. Our group of 5 ordered many different things (all non meat) and everyone was very happy with the food . I loved the Mujadara and thought the presentation of the food also contributed to the enjoyable experience. After dinner we shared two desserts, Baklava and Pear Tart. Both were beautiful to look at and delightful to eat.
Gave us our food to go in coffee cups?!!!!!!
We had a guest from out of town, all of us are vegan and wanted to take our friend to a nice restaurant. I highly recommend Saha as it's elegant and comfortable. They have excellent vegan options and we were all very pleased with our meal, service and setting.
innovative combinations - tasty, unusual, memorable - we go there frequently and bring out-of-town visitors
The food (veg, fish, meat) was all flavorful and delicious. The only problem was service, I think from understaffing -- there was some confusion on seating, and then quite long lags waiting to order, etc. But the service was cheerful, with good recommendations.
Fantastic food! Every
Truly unique and excellent food. Servers willingly and capably explain all dishes. Staff is efficient and attentive. Tables are slighted "squeezed" together which contributes to difficult table conversation and impacts the overall ambiance.
Beautiful light fixtures, interesting menu, high prices, but dishes were bland, and not worth the price.
They seated us before they opened which was very kind. The service was excellent. I thought the food quality was very good but it was poorly mated with overrich sauces and both of our entrees were luke warm. Also I could smell garbage.
We were disappointed to be told that the bar was not open and that only beer and wine were available. It was surprising that after we ordered, the table next to us were served martinis. We thought the lamb and salmon dishes were delicious. It was a cool night and every time the front door opened it brought in a rush of cold air.
Main courses were quite overpriced given the taste.
Very good food and service. Nice price to value. Excellent service
Good place not very pricey. Food is decent but service was terrible. Servers didn't ask for drink refills, didn't ask how the food was, didn't check on us during service if we needed anything. We had a prix fixe 3 course dinner but servers brought out the 2nd course while we were still having our first course. They didn't bring out out 3rd course for a while after we finished our 2nd course. Most importantly, servers weren't providing service with even a smile let alone go above and beyond. Would reconsider before going back here next time. They used to be amazing when they were in the city
Our first visit and we had a delicious meal. The staff were helpful and efficient and the menu was varied and interesting. We definitely plan to go back
