Middle Eastern
Please note, Saha Berkeley will be closing as of April 30, 2019. Please visit our Saha location in San Francisco. Saha means “to good health” in Arabic. At Saha, we believe in the farm-to-table philosophy. We work with local purveyors in sourcing ingredients which come from sustainable and organic practices. Chef Mohamed Aboghanem discovered his passion for cooking more than 30 years ago and is very proud of the move to Berkeley in 2016. In addition to traditional dishes from the Middle East and North Africa, Chef Mohamed throws an Arabic flare on California fare. We have signature cocktails created by our lovely bartending team which change seasonally, and our wine list is focused on fine wines from organic and Biodynamic producers from around the world. We are the perfect place to celebrate life over a good meal.

Food was wonderfully creative riff on Arabic dishes. The service was rather slow, which made it difficult to get to our show at Zellerbach on time.

We had the fried avocado, scallops, yemeni salad, and the meatballs. Hard to pick a favorite, but I might give the meatballs a slight edge.

Wine list needs work - did not know anything on it - tried one sip of the rose which sent us to water as our drink for dinner.

Would definitely go back when in the area.

It's wonderful to experience a restaurant with unusual food, excellent service (even when grossly understaffed - just that night), and fair pricing. We continue to return because we are always delighted!

Excellent food but servers got slammed when the dinner time rush was in full swing. You need at least two more on staff to support the number of dinner guests We had to flag down a waitress for dessert menus and for the check. This does affect the overall dining experience.

I have always enjoyed my dinners at Saha in San Francisco and when they moved to Berkeley. I haven't been back in about a year and what a difference that time has made. We made dinner reservations for Sunday night at 7:30, the restaurant was half full, and we decided on the tasting menu for $35, three courses. The service was slow, the food came out cold, we waiting for our second and third courses and they came out together. Nothing tasted special as I had remembered from my last visit and the quality has dropped. I will not return to the Berkeley spot and will maybe try the SF spot again if I am in the neighborhood.

We went here at least a year ago and it was quite good. We liked it so much we went back about 5 months ago, when it was still pretty good. Food was great; service poor (apparently understaffed). And this most recent visit, sadly our favorite dish was taken off the menu and the stuff we did order was just OK. The menu looks interesting but the food lacked complexity. The service was minimal, at best.

There were a lot of wonderful flavors in the Middle Eastern dishes here. Service was very friendly but the two servers were overworked. The duck bisteeya was good but a bit dry; my lamb curry was delicious.

Modern middle eastern cuisine. Creative, California ingredients, seafood, really took the cuisine to the next level. All the 2nd courses are great. The bastilla is ok, I wished the fillings would would have stronger flavors, more spices. Of the 3 main we tried, the duck is really not that good.

My extended family adores Saha for the amazing food - we have a vegan, a celiac, and a bunch of omnivores and we are all happy with the range of choices. The food is amazing, and never disappoints. The hardest part is choosing! Every dish, from salad to entree to dessert, is just exquisite. But the prices are steep enough (for us) that we can only justify coming for special occasions. And the service has left a lot to be desired on our last 4 visits. The server this time did not seem to understand the etiquette around when to bring things or clear things - with 2 of us being handed dessert menus while the third person was still only partly through his main course. Water was not filled even though none of us had ordered anything to drink (until we asked).

The service was great. Noise level was excellent. Food is good, but some dishes could be better. Mushroom pate is terrific. The fava bean dish with goat cheese was tasteless. The ravioli itself was good but the sauce on it was bizarrely sweet and lacked any other flavor. Mixed.

The menu was interesting and inviting. I loved the Pick 3 option because it gave those of us without huge appetites a chance to try more variety. Our group of 5 ordered many different things (all non meat) and everyone was very happy with the food . I loved the Mujadara and thought the presentation of the food also contributed to the enjoyable experience. After dinner we shared two desserts, Baklava and Pear Tart. Both were beautiful to look at and delightful to eat.

The food (veg, fish, meat) was all flavorful and delicious. The only problem was service, I think from understaffing -- there was some confusion on seating, and then quite long lags waiting to order, etc. But the service was cheerful, with good recommendations.

They seated us before they opened which was very kind. The service was excellent. I thought the food quality was very good but it was poorly mated with overrich sauces and both of our entrees were luke warm. Also I could smell garbage.

We were disappointed to be told that the bar was not open and that only beer and wine were available. It was surprising that after we ordered, the table next to us were served martinis. We thought the lamb and salmon dishes were delicious. It was a cool night and every time the front door opened it brought in a rush of cold air.

Good place not very pricey. Food is decent but service was terrible. Servers didn't ask for drink refills, didn't ask how the food was, didn't check on us during service if we needed anything. We had a prix fixe 3 course dinner but servers brought out the 2nd course while we were still having our first course. They didn't bring out out 3rd course for a while after we finished our 2nd course. Most importantly, servers weren't providing service with even a smile let alone go above and beyond. Would reconsider before going back here next time. They used to be amazing when they were in the city

Very creative combinations with beautiful flavors. Prix fixe was reasonably priced and allowed you to choose from each of the three categories off the menu. Don't miss the avocado salad and the mushroom pate. Really, don't miss any of it.
Modern setting with wonderful old Moroccan lamps.

The food was great, service started out very scattered and frantic. Things got a little better toward the end but never felt under control.

Food again was great, pacing of the courses was a little slow, but better than everything getting to the table at one time.

The Heart beet salad and Lobster appetizer were great as was the spicy seafood entree.

My wife liked her maashi and red curry as well.

Saha is on the list for a return visit at some point.

I really wanted to like Saha, but thought the food was hit or miss, depending on the dish (salmon baklava was really interesting and tasty, lamb curry was tough and had only a slight hint of curry flavor), and the service was VERY slow: 45 minutes from ordering before our appetizers arrived, and then lengthy delays for each subsequent course.

First off, the food is terrific--flavorful, well-presented. Parking easy. Wait staff pleasant, if inexperienced.
However, when we arrived, ready to order main dishes and salad we were handed a Prix Fixe menu for a 4-course meal at $55/person. When we asked about that, we were told by the hostess we could order ala carte and that the Prix Fixe was $45 tonight. The server was similarly confused and we were never told the price of ala carte items. The 4 of us decided to order 2 Prix Fixe and 2 main dishes. After we finished the meal (every dish was perfect and the amount just right) we were given menus for dessert and told that dessert (the 4th course) wasn't included in the Prix Fixe (thus the lower price!)
The total cost of our meal for 4 (no drinks and no dessert) was $208. Pricey, we thought. Unfortunate since the food is excellent.

We were there for Valentine’s Day. I specifically checked their website to make sure they had their regular menu. Their website stated very clearly they had their regular menu and a special prefix’ed. When we got there we were told they only had the prefix’ed. While I enjoyed the prefix it really wasn’t what I was looking for. Four courses for $55 was a good value. I started with a small green salad with shaved cheese, then had delicious scallops, then had a steak that was excellent cooked perfectly for my main. We finished with a wonderful coconut cake. The portion sizes were moderate. We ordered a bottle of red wine that I have had several times in the past in other restaurants. It was a good value at $40. After ordering it I was told that they were all out for the evening even though it was only 7 o’clock. We were asked to choose something else the next bottle was $48 and everything else was over 50. While our server was very nice and efficient I felt like I had been let down twice. We were just about to order a couple glasses of wine when she showed up with the original bottle he wanted to order. She stated that they found one bottle under the bar they did not know they had. Needless to say we were very happy about that. I have a net Saha on several occasions and I’ve always enjoyed it. I would not let this stop me from coming back again. However, I do wish that restaurants in general would check with they write in the description especially on holidays around the menu. This is the second time this is happened to me in a very short period of time and the first one was from a general menu to a fixed of over $125 per person. Needless to say we were very unhappy with that experience.

Saha never fails to amaze me. The chef has a wonderful way with food and spices. Everything is so delicious and you won't find these flavors anywhere else. My friend and I now have a tradition to celebrate our birthdays each year at Saha our mutually favorite restaurant. We started in San Francisco and now cross the bay to Berkeley. The menu changed slightly this year from last year so I tried some new things, all yummy. I am pescatarian (vegetarian plus fish) so I can't vouch for the lamb dishes but the vegetarian (wild mushroom knaffe, musadara, stuffed artichoke) and fish (salmon baklava, octupus salad, scallops and quinoa cake) dishes were all so delicious!

While the food and service were excellent, our visit almost ended before it began. When my boyfriend and I walked in the door - at 9pm, the time of our reservation - there was no one at the front of the house to greet us. It was a rainy, cold night, and there were only two other tables with customers and one patron at the bar; the neglect was obviously not due to an overabundance of business. We awkwardly stood at the front door for about a minute, and eventually a woman - not sure if she was a host or a server - walked toward us with a scowl on her face, and very blatantly looked at her watch before speaking to us as if to indicate that the restaurant was closing soon (for the record, the kitchen closes at 10pm, a full hour after our reservation). I told her we had a reservation, hoping that she would see that I very intentionally indicated in the notes of my reservation that we were visiting for my boyfriend's birthday. She poked around on a tablet, took us to our table, put the menus down in front of us and walked away. Her behavior was so off-putting my boyfriend and I considered leaving immediately. The only reason we did not: our server, who made her way to our table right away. She was a delight. I know that everyone has their bad days, but that surly woman almost lost Saha a $100 tab on a very slow night.
