Sage - A Plant Based Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Well worth the drive of over an hour to get there! Everything we've had has been delicious, including cocktails, dinner, lattes, and breakfast. Beautiful ambience on the patio, equally nice eating at the bar! Phenomenal vegan food that even omnis love. This place would be dangerous to our budget if we lived closer!
Love the food but every time I come here the service gets worse and worse. It took over 20 minutes for a server to even greet and come to our table for a drink order and another 30 minutes after that to take our food order. It wasn't even that busy...
Just a bummer -- the service is horrendous.
Everything is good, or good enough but not great. The best was my friend's acai bowl with fresh fruit and granola, but his polenta with vegetables had way too much sage or strong herbs and was like a block of cornbread vegetable casserole instead of anything creamy and nuanced.
My chilaquiles were salty and the soggy tortilla chips eclipsed the scramble. It was heavy overall. I wish they would trust that the food would be good without oversalting.Coffee was okay (miss milk with it).
The desserts looked excellent, but didn't try them.
The place has a nice look, but the narrow metal chairs and thinly padded benches are not welcoming.
The restaurant is good enough when you have to eat vegan, but I'd love to see it improve and live up to its menu's promise.
We are not vegan, but LOVE the food at Sage! My favs are the tacos and tostadas, but everything is deliciously and creatively prepared. The sauces are really interesting and yummy. The service is very quick. I must admit that there was a long hair in my food that kind of grossed me out, but tried to forget about it. Hopefully they can somehow be more careful when preparing food.
Sage has become our Saturday lunch go to spot and worth the drive up from the Beach Cities. I initially went because it's around the corner from my hairdresser @ Ziggy's to test it. Took two teens who ADORED IT. We are NOT Vegan but it didn't make a difference, everything was fresh and tasty. Took my husband up the next time and it's now his favorite spot! Favorites: Buffalo Cauliflower Wings, Vegan Tacos are AMAZING, Açai Bowl, and the two main dish salads are really nice choices (even if fried). We tried Jackfruit Nachos which were good but a little light on the toppings side... Crowd is young, service is 'pretty good'.... I do think they get a little too easily 'overwhelmed' when things pick up and I saw a few clients each time looking a little frustrated like us. ONLY REAL DOWNSIDE: Drinks are overpriced and quickly add to an easy lunch. $14 Bloody is a waste, and had little flavor! Otherwise- will be returning and returning again!
Food wasn’t as good as it usually is. I frequent this restaurant and am usually satisfied. Food came out fast but wasn’t up to par. Ordered a few dishes that we typically order (Broccoli Pasta Bowl and Soul Bowl) every time we come and they weren’t prepared the same as in the past. Could go on and on, but the point is this experience was a disappointing one. Will try again because this place is usually good.
I can't get enough of the cauliflower "chicken" wings. Delicious. I also tried the jackfruit tacos. I admit I was skeptical, but they were good enough to bring half my dish home, since servings are large. Also, since I was not familiar with jackfriut, the waitress was kind enough to bring me a small taste before I committed to my order.
The service is friendly and efficient, and thankfully not overbearing.
I will be back. :)
The service was great, the food was terrible. I would like another meal complementary or my money back. I have gone to Sage restaurant for many years and I've always highly recommended it and have always been extremely satisfied until Wednesday night, October, 25th, 2017. One of my favorite dishes there is the artichoke pizza. The waitress warned me that they changed the recipe. Now I know why she warned me, it was terrible & I would like my money back or another meal on Sage restaurant. I also have always enjoyed the habanero hot sauce, for some reason they changed the recipe with that also and it was not the same it was not very good. Although I did not ask them, I suspect that the they must be under new ownership.

I sent the above message to both OpenTable & Sage restaurant on October, 25th, 2017.
Today is November 1, 2017 & I have still not received a response from OpenTable that I booked the reservation through or Sage restaurant.

Seriously I want to like this place so much more than I do. The food is actually just mediocre. I got the "New Bollywood Bowl" and it was so bad.. so tasteless and odd.. no cohesion or depth to the flavors.
I like the atmosphere and even the surly waitperson sorta fits the atmosphere but this food game is not happening..
We loved the Califlower chicken wings, japaeño poppers, “Pork” Tacos and the banana split dessert. The only downside was the spicy Mac & Cheese since it wasn’t spicy at all and the “cheese” was tasteless and bland. I would recommend this restaurant to my friends and family and overall can’t wait to come back.
I came to Sage for a Sunday brunch with a friend. We ate inside since we were on a time crunch, but I'd recommend eating on the patio within the lovely garden if you have more time. I felt thoroughly comfortable as a gluten-free vegan, as our server took extra care to check my allergies and recommend options for my dietary restrictions. It was hard to choose what to eat since there were so many options! A refreshing, albeit a bit pricey, option for lunch. Great choice!
Wonderful food, and an even better destination now that there's a brewery and full bar in-house. The waiter was excellent and steered us properly in terms of recommendations. But the wait staff was also very distractible. You could see them bringing our drinks but being sidetracked somehow, sometimes by each other. But that's a quibble. We will be back often.
Service can be slow. Outside seating has a nice ambiance. Love the hearts of palm ceviche & taco salad, I did not like the spinach dip & will never order the raw cheesecake ever again. They make pretty decent cocktails & I enjoyed their wellness shot. Will return as their menu is quite impressive & they offer so many food options.
Service was abysmal. Our waiter disappeared for ages on end. Hosts weren't very with it either. When we got there we were asked if we'd like to sit outside or inside. It was chilly so we said inside. Another host came and escorted us to an outside table...where the left us standing until an inside table was cleared and reset. Awkward. Food was pretty good but pricy. Dinner for two with tip was $93 (would have been more if our waiter was awake). The ginger/blueberry sambuca was great! I might give it another go but for the price I expect better service.
As a newish vegan, this was my first time at a vegan restaurant. I dragged a friend there with me with a mix of trepidation and excitement. Ordered buffalo cauliflower, blta pizza and pesto pizza. The food did was so amazingly good. Didn’t taste like it was trying to be something it was not. It was amazing pizza and great drinks. The service wasn’t that great. A bit slow and I felt like I was bothering our server when we needed something. Other than that a great experience and would return.
