Best 5 Restaurants 2017 - TIMES-PICAYUNE
Saffron nola, the Vilkhu family's first full time restaurant venture, stemming from their pop up restaurant of 6 years and their 26-year catering business. Chef Arvinder Vilkhu marries his Indian heritage with local and global flavors while using classical and modern techniques. Ashwin Vilkhu, GM and Bar director uses those same nuanced flavors and incorporates them into a thoughtful cocktail menu. Pairings were also taken into account when developing the wine menu, while paying very close attention to what varietals work best with South Asian food.
The super approachable menu is the Vilkhu family's communication of the evolution of Indian cuisine through New Orleans. Their overall goal is to provide quality food, superior service in a warm-hospitable environment...while engaging all senses.
Dinner was so good on Thursday we returned on Saturday! What wonderful food - so different than typical Indian cuisine. Excellent, thoughtful service. Beautiful atmosphere. Oh so worth a trip!
As always the service is impeccable the food is sinfully delicious!
excellent food and service. i found it a bit too loud for conversation. Otherwise, perfect!
Excellent! This is the type of restaurant worthy of a Michelin Star
Overall the food was very good but I had hoped that it would have been slightly more authentic Indian flavors. I found the shrimp salty. I loved roti courses, though.
The food was outstanding. The staff was very attentive and informative. Room was a little on the loud side, but it's a small space that was busy so it shouldn't come as a surprise. We will be going back.
One of our favorite restaurants! Always a treat. And amazing service.
I saw Saffron NOLA in a NYT article complementing the restaurant on how well they combined Cajun and Indian cuisine. I was immediately interested given my love for both types of food and absolutely had to go. I was not disappointed in the slightest. The drink I had was I See Stars and was a delightful spicy sweet mix of flavors topped with a gorgeous star anise (the orange drink). As a main dish I had the tandori shrimp which was blackened to perfection and on an utterly tasty bed of coleslaw garnished in a light yet savory green chile sauce. Our server was polite, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and the impeccable design of the restaurant made for a wonderful evening. I absolutely will be back
I made a reservation for Saffron a while ago because I know it’s hard to get one! It was well worth the wait! The food is amazing and the wait staff is terrific; very attentive! Loved it and will definitely be back.
Very good Indian restaurant. It features some items that you won't find on the typical Indian restaurant's menu, and that is notable. Service is very attentive. Prices are on the high side. I don't understand why some people rate this as one of the best restaurants in the whole country, but it is good.
Everything was perfect, made better by our server (from Vermont, don't remember her name), who guided us effortlessly through our experience.
Food was great, minus the hair in 1 of the patron's dishes. The service was a tad bit overwhelming. Our initial waitress was overbearing in her attentiveness and tidiness. I respect being accessible but it was just too much for us as a group. We were in town for a family reunion enjoying one another's company and she made it quite impossible to do so. Later I noticed that's the culture of the restaurant wait staff. Again I respect and appreciate it but a little consideration should be applied. Maybe getting a feel for each party...is a suggestion.
Joe Semmes is an amazing chef and host. He makes the dinner flow.
Amazing food and service!
I love the restaurant, my only complaint is that the music is WAY too LOUD!!!! The food is great, the service. is great...I pray they turn down the sound.
Excellent food, excellent service!
Delicious authentic food with excellent, knowledgeable service.
Amazing service, cocktails and Apps. Food portions are big, so plan on taking some home for later.
This family run restaurant is modern in its sophistication yet warm and welcoming at the same time. The Vilku family has my admiration and affection for creating this lovely place.
Staff are very friendly and professional. Great service!
Love this restaurant for the outstanding menu and cocktails. The seafood gumbo that I had Saturday night was absolutely delicious!!! Some of the best this gumbo lover has ever had!!
Unable to accommodate any special needs!! Front desk is unprofessional
First time at Saffron and I really liked it. Not traditional Indian food but the flavors lean in that direction. Lots of small plates let you try a good variety of food. Very pretty restaurant and great service. Parking on the street was easy. Overall a great little restaurant in Nola.
Two couples. Excellent food with great variety of dishes. We have eaten Indian food in the United States and in Europe - Saffron NOLA is the best we have ever had. The service is fabulous and the portions are very nice. Indian food with a creole touch including a great gumbo with curry. One of our favorite restaurants in New Orleans. I highly recommend Saffron NOLA.
Enjoyed the small plates as well as the roti. Service is always very good. They have interesting gins to choose from.
I’m not a big fan of Indian cuisine....but friends said this place was different. I went and they were correct. Wonderful food and great service. I highly recommend it even if you hate curry.....lots of options.
The menu options are inventive and the food was excellent. The service was exceptional- well informed, helpful and attentive. A delightful restaurant.
As always, a great experience.
The bar produced great cocktails and everything we had to eat was superb. Excellent service as well.
This is a very good dining experience. Ashwin and his family are very involved and the food is delightful. Reservations a must for a table/booth, but you or a couple may score walk-in seating at the bar. Very loud during peak hours !
Great Indian Restaurant. The best in the New Orleans area. Actually one of the best in the country.
I have dined at Saffron 4 other times, and the food is always incredible. However, the noise level was absolutely unbearable! We had to scream as loud as possible, at each other, in order to even attempt and hold a conversation. During previous dining experiences here, it has always been loud. This past Saturday was even worse & very unenjoyable. We ended up rushing through our dinner and leaving to go have cocktails at another establishment, just so we could hear each other speam. The quality of food is phenomenal. I will not be returning though. I would highly recommend panels, curtains on the windows, something to absorb the sound. Terrible!!
Wonderful dinner with great drinks! We tried many different dishes and everything was fantastic. Will definitely return!
The best!!! Of everything!!!
Enjoyed a delicious dinner celebrating my husband’s birthday. While everything was great my favorites were the Oyster Bed Roast (maybe the best oysters ever), the chicken biryani and the bread. My son ordered the Halwa for dessert and it was amazing.
The food was exceptional. There were four of us and we did family style so I got to taste lots of different dishes. Every single one was spectacular!! The place is lovely and the service was impeccable. By far one of the best places I've EVER eaten at and will now be a go to for special events in our house! Thank you Saffron for a very incredible evening.
Everyone was attentive and helpful. The food was excellent.
Savory, delicious, and very nicely presented food. The Gumbo is as fantastic as all of the reports say it is! A perfect roux spiced with curry. So unique - a match made in heaven! Our server was friendly and attentive. Beautiful, well made cocktails. And a good selection of mezcal for my husband. We will definitely go again.
